Breezed through this super-short book of poetry within minutes! Enjoyed the speed and topics touched on (family, love, loss) and would definitely read more from the author. (Thank you, NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.)
This collection of poems were riveting and touching. Many of them were beautiful but there were a few that really stood out to me as a black woman. I also appreciated the poems that I didn’t necessarily relate to but felt the ability to empathize with.
While the cover is pretty, it does look as if it could be AI which is really my only complaint. I’m hoping that it’s not the case as AI has been a real issue for artists.
I received this as an ARC from NetGalley. Overall I thought it was a decent fast read. I just like more flow with my poetry than this provided.
A very quick read and more than worth the time.
With beautiful, well flowing prose, I found myself pleasantly surprised at the amount of emotion that could be felt through the pages. Specifically the poems of loss, family, and politics. For a rather short collection, I didn't expect to feel so emotional.
There were a few poems in here that felt... Unfinished. Or perhaps overworked. Though the topics seemed to come from a genuine place, personally, they didn't pack much of a punch and instead felt banal. I found that these particular poems were more front-loaded. Fortunately, as I continued to read, I felt the quality improved.
My biggest issue is not even an issue with the writing, if I'm honest. I'm aware that people should not judge a book by its cover, but it would be silly to think the cover of a book is not important. Having an AI filtered picture as the cover for this poetry book is almost disrespectful to the art inside of it. It appears unprofessional and sloppy. Which in turn, may lead readers to assume the poetry inside of it is as well.
Aside from that, overall, I'm glad I gave this collection a chance and I would gladly recommend this to casual poetry readers.
