First person, dual pov
Main characters: Brynn and Josh
I loved This Spells Love so I was very excited to see another Kate Robb book coming out! Like her earlier book, this was well written, sweet, and madly hilarious. Reading this is exactly like watching a sitcom, which is a pretty unique thing that Kate can do with books.
Brynn has been down on her luck, crushed after a recent and unexpected divorce. Now she lives in her home she purchased with her ex and her new roommate Josh. When a night out with the girls takes them to the bar that Josh bartends at, Brynn is able to make an escape with his help. The pair weren’t necessarily friends at this point, but Josh could see Brynn’s despair, and so he takes her home and watches her favorite show with her: Carson’s Cove. The next morning, both of them wake up IN Carson Cove. For real.
This show is like a Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill classic early 2000s teen drama. It is made up but the author explains it so well it feels like I’ve watched it. The pair are stuck in this weird dimension of Carson’s Cove but 10+ years later after the shows finale. They have to navigate this world as if they are characters in the show, and they can’t return until they perform the finale that Carson’s Cove deserved: Brynn’s character Sloan ending up with boy next door Spencer. But with Josh also in the mix, Brynn begins to see the flaws in her beloved nostalgic tv show.
On paper, this was perfect for me. However I did for some reason have a hard time finishing this. I would be enjoying the story, but every time I put it down I would forget about it for long periods of time. So maybe while I loved the stories and the characters and the humor, it wasn’t quite exciting enough to keep my attention. I blame the internet for my short attention span.
The concept of this was so good and the reading experience was amazing. I can’t really think of anything I DIDN’T like about this book, just that it maybe didn’t keep me completely engrossed the whole time. That is probably a me thing though. I highly recommend this!! 4.5 stars
The ratings for this book haven't been great, so I kept putting off reading it, but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it! The one thing that was really off for me was the pacing of the romance between Brynn and Josh. It was so sudden and didn't quite make sense, even though they seemed like they had the potential to be adorably sweet together. I think that as a Millennial, I was the prime audience for this book. It reminded me of several teenage dramas that I watched in high school. I thought it was actually quite fun and I found myself needing to read to the end.
Thank you to Netgalley, Kate Robb and Random House Publishing Group for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Definitely gives off vibes of a 2000s teen soap version of Pleasantville. On the eve of her 30th birthday, newly-divorced Brynn wants a love and life like those on her favorite show Carson’s Cove as she binges it once again, reliving the cliffhanger ending after it was canceled too soon. After a surprise birthday cake shows up at her door, a magical midnight wish transports Brynn and her roommate Josh to Carson’s Cove. They find that she’s now town sweetheart Sloan & Josh is bad boy Fletcher & together, they must give the characters the ending they deserve…or risk not making it back home at all. And the longer they spend in this fictional town, the more they realize it’s not as perfect as it seems…especially when it comes to romance.
I loved the first half of this book and imagined if the same happened to me and I was transported into Gilmore Girls or the OC. But much of the rest of the book lagged on and it also left me with questions I never got answered (ie cake/Sheldon?). Overall, a cute magical realism romance though.
Thank you to Random House for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
This book is so cute!! I was a huge CW girlie back in the day, so I was the exact right audience for this romance. I also appreciated how Robb infused modern day sensibilities into that world and made me think about my old comfort shows in a new light. I wanted a little more from the romance aspect between the two main characters, but I did like their chemistry. I just wish they had more of a reason to like each other, besides the sexual attraction. All in all, though, I devoured this in a single day and couldn't put it down, so I was a satisfied customer!
Brynn thought she had her life together, but a divorce has left her heartbroken, with a roommate, watching her favorite 2000s TV drama as a comfort watch. She and her roommate l, Josh, wake up one day to find herself in the world of the tv show, with the job to create the happily ever after that never happened thanks to a surprise ending after a cliffhanger. But they find the TV show world isn’t as perfect as it seems and in the ultimate plot twist, Brynn and Josh begin to fall for each other.
Has anyone else ever said they wished they lived in or could visit the fictional world/town from their favorite comfort shows? (Looking at you Stars Hollow). This book is literally that. The town gave me Dawson’s Creek vibes and was full of that 2000s TV drama nostalgia. I loved the premise, I just wanted a bit more from the romance. Overall this was a cute, cozy read and if you loved 2000s teen TV, this will take you right back to that world.
Oh all the rom-com-teenage-dramedy feels mixed up for 30+ year olds. Very sweet journey back to the souls of DC, OTH, and more. This story shines a light that not everything was picture perfect on our CW dramas, but instead you need to fight for what is right for you - and your heart.
Super sweet story of finding yourself - and picking your dream - even if it’s not what you originally had in mind.
Super unique premise and great use of magical realism! Who hasn't wanted to go and live in their favorite comfort show town? Of course it is TV and never going to be what want it to actually be since real life doesn't work that way. I appreciated that there wasn't too much lead up to when they were sent to the show and got into the plot quickly. Surprisingly reflective as well as it makes you reconsider your favorite tv characters and the parallel to friends you might have had you were younger. Overall a very fun and sweet book!
I found this to be a cute, easy read. It was kind of a silly reason why the main characters got sucked into the TV show and I feel like that could have been done better, but it was a fun aspect to a novel. Watching Brynn navigate her teenage/young adult TV obsession, experience it's flaws, and grow and learn from them was beautiful. There are many aspects of real life that this line of thinking could and should be applied to, and I loved that the author chose to take this route as part of the plot.
I also loved the love story between Brynn and Josh. Who doesn't enjoy a roommates to lovers trope? Josh also found himself again in ways during their time in the TV show, which was a great addition to the story. I love that Robb decided that it wouldn't just be Brynn that grew as a character, and Josh got his time to shine.
I have now read both of Kate Robb's novels and I can say that I will be continuing to pick up her books in the future.
I didn't enjoy this one as much as This Spells Love! Nothing really memorable with this book, it was a nice fluff read.
I loved Kate Robb’s debut so I was really looking forward to this but unfortunately I had to DNF. I tried to pick it up several times but I couldn’t get invested in it. I think it was mostly because I didn’t connect with any of the characters. I’m bummed about this one but still looking forward to what this author is doing next.
I initially thought the concept of this was interesting. The plot follows a newly divorced Brynn. On her 30th birthday, she makes a wish and somehow ends up in her favorite TV show (a show that seems to be similar to Dawson's Creek). Not only does she end up in their strange alternate reality, but so does her roommate, Josh. My main gripe with this story was the fact that I felt like there weren't very many changes for us to care for both Brynn & Josh getting together. This story would have been much better in my opinion if they had more cutesy interactions.
I will say, this story was a dual-POV, and I loved Josh's chapters. His side plot line was really good, and I was rooting for him throughout the entire story. I think overall, I would rate this a 3.25 stars
Cute read...at times I couldn't put it down. Had me thinking of the shows on TV in the early 2000's and the movie Pleasantville. I haven't read one like this before and enjoyed the premise. It was a fun concept that is lighthearted and has a HEA.
Brynn and Josh are roommates who find themselves thrown into Brynn's favorite TV series the day after Brynn's birthday. Think Dawson's Creek or One Tree Hill. The "show" picks up 15 years after it ended with all the characters coming back to town for a number of reasons and both Brynn and Josh are cast as two of the show regulars. An extra wants the show to end a certain way and when it does Brynn and Josh will go back home. But each of them are making their mark on the world and things may not go as planned.
Prime Time Romance has similarities to the author's first book, This Spells Love, but I enjoyed this one more. I like the relationship between the two main characters and watching it develop throughout the story, but also watching their personal growth and realizing what they really want.
The other characters throughout the book are enjoyable and add to the story. I liked the idea of being thrown into your favorite TV show and being able to talk to the characters you loved.
This is told from a dual POV.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I loved Kate Robb's debut, but this one wasn't for me, unfortunately! I had a hard time getting past the magical elements in this one and didn't feel attached to any of the characters. That said, if you love 2000s teen dramas, Hallmark movies, and 'Pleasantville' - this could be worth picking up to see if it's for you!
I was so excited to read this book because I really enjoyed Kate Robb's debut, "This Spells Love," and because I am a massive "Dawson's Creek" fan, which this book is heavily inspired by. This book was brimming with 90s nostalgia and the descriptions and plot details about the fictional Carson's Cove was giving me such wonderful flashbacks to my favorite 90s/early 200s teen dramas. Teenage me would have jumped to have the opportunity to dive into my favorite fictional world, so it was so comforting to read about.
While I enjoyed the writing and the romance, it didn't leave me with any strong emotions. I thought the concept was so cool and so creative but the execution for me fell a little flat. I really liked Brynn and Josh's dynamic, especially as they both had to lean on each other in their little fish out of water experience, but I just wanted MORE from it. Overall I did enjoy this book especially because of the nostalgia I feel for my favorite teen dramas growing up, and I'm looking forward to more books by this author because I love the creativity and magical aspects to her stories.
Thank you Dial Press and NetGalley for this eARC.
This had all the makings of a good premise, and I was really into the aughts drama vibe it had going but something about it wasn’t executed as well as I would’ve liked.
Brynn and Josh were fine as MCs, but neither of them had super fleshed out or discussed backstories/emotional trauma. They initially had good chemistry in the “real world” but in Carson’s Cove they had snippets of chemistry but I didn’t get a relationship vibe from them for most of it. It felt more like a buddy cop movie?
I liked Josh as a character, but I felt like he could’ve been portrayed deeper. Brynn was written well and had good character development but I just couldn’t relate to her.
I really liked the premise of this book but it felt like something was missing in the romance. There is a good amount of spice and sweetness but not a ton of depth. There is that early aughts TV nostalgia. It brings up a lot of teen dramas of the past. I enjoyed the magical element but I think at some points the book leaned on that too much and backed away from the romance.
I loved this! I thought it was a really interesting and entertaining read. Spicy, sweet, recognizing that what you first desired was not what you needed. I enjoyed getting to know Josh and Brynn. Anyone looking for a funny and unique romantic comedy should definitely read this book, in my opinion. I love romances that have a hint of magical realism. All of the 2000s teen show references were amazing; they brought back fond memories of my high school days. It was also a very sweet romance.
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group for the eARC.
Thank you NeyGalley for the ARC. This was a sweet story, but I felt like it was missing the romance. I really wanted to love it since I adore this author.
The Dawson's Creek nostalgia was real in this book. Took me back to the comfort of re-watching Dawson's, One Tree Hill, Gilmore Girls - where everything and nothing happened, and the stakes were never too high. My husband teases me about HEAs and asks, when you know they are going to get together, is there really any tension in the book? And the answer is yes, I gotta know how they make it from barely speaking to fully devoted!
