Brynn is divoreced on her thirtieth birthday. She binges on her beloved 200s teenage soap which ended on a cliffhanger. She wishes on a birthday cake for a happily-ever-after. She wakes next morning in her soap world and she becomes the main female character in the world. Exept that she falls for her roommate Josh....
I enjoyed the magical element It was a fun read. Great characters... Really enjoy the fast paced plot.
Thanks to the publisher for the arc.
Now this is a romcom!! It reminded me so much of the greatest era of campy romcoms in the 200os. It was just fun to turn my brain off and completely just fall into this wild ride.
"Prime Time Romance" by Kate Bromley is a super fun and heartwarming read! Brynn, who’s just turned 30 and is newly divorced, wishes for a happily-ever-after and finds herself magically transported into her favorite 2000s teen soap, Carson’s Cove. It's so cool how she wakes up as Sloan, the show’s sweetheart, and her roommate Josh becomes the bad boy, Fletch. Their mission is to make the show’s main characters fall in love to get back home, but things get messy when Brynn and Josh start falling for each other. It's a whimsical mix of nostalgia, romance, and second chances that kept me hooked!
Brynn has been unhappy. She just got divorced and is living with Josh so she is able to pay her mortgage. Brynn has this obsession with Carson's Cove, a 90's t.v. show. After five seasons, the show left on a cliffhanger and never came back. No one was happy with the outcome. On the night of her 30th birthday, a birthday cake shows up at her door. Brynn makes a wish to get the perfect happily ever after. The next morning when she wakes up, she finds herself in Carson's Cove. Josh is there too! They aren't Brynn and Josh. They are Sloane and Fletcher, the characters from Carson's Cove. We find out that Brynn (aka Sloane) has to play out the happy ending that everyone wanted. She is unable to leave until this happens. Brynn realizes that the characters, and the show, aren't as great as they seemed.
I wasn't sure if this premise would work, but it did! I loved the 90's/2000 nod to shows like Dawson's Creek (Team Pacey!) I wish there was a little more romance with Brynn and Josh. Great story! Thank you Netgalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book.
Thank you to Dial Press for this advanced copy! All thoughts are my own.
This concept had me really excited as I love a good 2000s teen soap opera. However, I think while this was a great idea in theory, the execution left a lot to be desired.
Recently divorced Bryn is struggling: she hates her job, she's financially struggling, and her new "friends" have forgotten that it is her 30th birthday. While watching her teenage comfort show Carson's Cove that finished on an unsastifysing cliffhanger, she makes a wish for the happily ever after they both deserve. The next morning, she finds herself in the show playing the role of Sloane, the girl next door. However, her roommate Josh has been dropped into this universe too as the role of Fletch, the bad boy of the small New England town. They find out they've been brought here to finish the script and get the happily ever after everyone thinks the town deserves. But cracks start to break through the shiny veneer of the town and Bryn realizes the her favorite TV show might not be as wholesome as she thought.
I wanted to like this, I really did, but I really struggled with this after the 40% mark. I honestly think that if you had changed a few minor details with the "villain" in this, it could be passed as a horror movie. What was supposed to be a lighthearted and fun jaunt in the town felt a little bit like a nightmare at times. I hated that what was a comfort show for Bryn ended up becoming something she no longer enjoyed the longer she stayed.
I also felt like there was no chemistry between Josh and Bryn. It was really hard to read Josh's chapters as he had no prior knowledge of the show so the reader feels just as clueless as he does, which isn't that fun. The romance spark between these two felt a little bit random too as the reader is told in the beginning that Bryn and Josh don't really know each other that well outside of being roommates for a short period of time. I think the chemistry and the book would have been way more successful if Bryn and Josh had been good friends and he had secondhand knowledge of the show so his chapters didn't feel like both Josh and the reader are fumbling around in the dark.
I really struggled with Kate Robb's debut last year, but that is not to say that this book isn't good. I just don't think Kate's writing is for me. I think if you really enjoyed her previous release and you're a diehard fan of Dawson's Creek (unlike me, I missed that boat by a few years), you might like this one.
okay this was a good one. I love reading books with a modern magical realism in the plot. it was funny, relatable at times and cute! the sitcom aspect of this was so dear to my heart as I (a millennial) grew up stuck to the tv! the romance between the two main characters was sweet! funny with all the pranks and overall I enjoyed this book tons!
This was a cute romance read and i found it to be different from books i normally gravitate to. I throughly enjoyed it!
A cute romance. This is a lot different than most other romance books I’ve read. I liked the concept of the two main characters being transported into the FMC’s favorite tv show. Definitely made me think of Dawson’s Creek. The romance was great but I wanted to feel a little bit more connected to the characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC!
The premise of this book was irresistible to someone who grew up on WB teen dramas. I think it might be a little too much fussy in terms of setup, though, because the intricate scenario ends up overshadowing any kind of foundation for the potential chemistry aand relationship between the leading characters. I actually got more Truman Show and Pleasantville vibes from this, rather than Dawson's Creek, and found myself wanting to read something more along those lines. Dawson's Creek fans will definitely enjoy the connections that the author writes in, though. Nailed that dedication to Joshua Jackson, as well. Respect to this author for swinging this hard - it certainly caught my attention! I remember everything :)
omg I loved this book sm! this book was such a fun read and it was so different to my normal romance reads.
This book delivered all the 90's nostalgia I needed and was a quick, enjoyable read. While I found the premise adorable, the romance didn't quite hit the mark for me. Overall, it was just okay. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
While I liked the idea of this book, being transported into a beloved teen drama, hello Stars Hollow! But I just couldn't get into this. It was a little too wacky and odd.
So bummed this just was not for me! I couldn’t connect with the characters and just found the book slow & a bit boring.
Thank you for this ARC.
I don’t think I liked this as much as Robb’s first book, but it was a cute romance with a nostalgic twist. I wish the fantasy world was a bit better fleshed out and it did feel a bit like instalove, but it’s the kind of book I was looking for today.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Cute and gave me all the 90's vibes. Overall, this was a quick read but the romance felt a little lacking for me. I thought the premise was cute but this one was just an ok read for me. Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
I enjoyed Robb's "This Spells Love," so I requested this without reading much about it. When I finally did read the summary, I was a little unsure if this book would be for me (I find these contemporary romance but with a random fantasy element to be a bit hit or miss), but I ended up getting really sucked in. The female main character, Brynn, is divorced, unsettled, and about to turn 30. After a terrible Hinge date, she goes out with some "friends" the night before her birthday and quickly realizes that she would rather be at home, watching her favorite comfort show, Carson's Cove. Her super hot roommate Josh, a bartender at the club she got talked into going to, decides to head home with her because her phone and wallet are gone, and he's worried about her being drunk and unsafe on the streetcar (this is set in Toronto). When they get home, they hang out for basically the first time, with Josh letting Brynn introduce him to Carson's Cove. While they're watching, a mysterious Uber Eats delivery shows up with a birthday cake for Brynn, and she makes a wish that somehow sends her and Josh into the world of Carson's Cove. The Uber Eats delivery guy turns out to have drawn them there so that Brynn can slip into the role of girl next door Sloan, 15 years after the disappointing ending of Carson's Cove, and give her the ending she deserves. The whole thing is pretty weird, but it worked for me. Carson's Cove is definitely based on Dawson's Creek, but Robb talks about her other inspirations in her author note, and it's interesting to see how she crafts a fictional world (within a fictional world) based on 90s/00s teen television that the adults who once loved it can actually question and critique it. As a big comfort re-watcher of my own favorite shows, I liked this strange plot. I felt that the romance was a bit rushed overall, but I was still rooting for Brynn and Josh (and rooting against basically everyone in Carson's Cove). A fun, fast-paced read with a pretty unique setup.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book early! I really enjoyed it!
The characters, Brynn and Josh, were sweet and extremely likable individuals getting trapped in an alternative world. I love the concept of being in a world from a television show, however, it was unrealistic and hard to grasp in real life.
Regardless, I really enjoyed reading the characters, storyline, and feeling of the story. I rated its 4.5 ⭐️.
I loved Robb’s debut, This Spells Love, so I was stoked to get an ARC from NetGalley for her new book, Prime Time Romance.
Similarly to the debut, this one has some dimension jumping as our protagonist Brynn makes a wish on her birthday and ends up in Carson’s Cove, which is the town where her favorite teen show is. Weirder yet, she becomes one of the main characters in the show and is on a mission to bring her the “happy ever after” she deserves and perhaps was missing from the disappointing series finale.
Her birthday wish also somehow brings her hot roommate, Josh, along to this other dimensional TV town and he’s another one of the TV characters, but not the main love interest. It gets clear early on what’s going to happen between Byrnn and Josh as their attraction together grows. We get to read Josh’s POV throughout.
My favorite part of the book were the authors questions at the end and the inspiration she took from all the angsty teen dramas out there. If you were / are a CW fan, this one will tickle your fancy.
Many thanks to NetGalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review. Prime Time Romance is planned to drop on 9/3/24.
Thanks to Dial Press for the copy of this book!
“I am okay to wake up every morning and know that there aren’t guarantees in life, but that there is adventure. That there are new beginnings. That I need to love hard for whatever time I’m given because life can throw curveballs at any moment, and sometimes those curveballs are wild.”
I adored THIS SPELLS LOVE by Kate Robb and this is no sophomore slump! Brynn and Josh end up trapped in Carson’s Cove - Brynn’s favorite small town TV drama that was abruptly canceled on a cliffhanger. To get back home, they have to take on roles of some of the characters and give them the endings they deserve.
This is a magical realism that’s a nod to early 2000s TV - especially Dawson’s Creek. I loved the small town nostalgia, the sparks between Brynn and Josh, the character growth, and all of Kate’s witty one-liners. Highly recommend setting aside a summer day to binge this one!
This magical realism storyline delivered with all the nostalgic 90s/00s teenage/young adult drama tv shows and movie vibes…like a collision of Dawson’s Creek/Pleasantville and the newer Gilmore Girls. Brynn, struggling with her current life dynamic of turning 30 after a divorce, and her roommate Josh, are transported to the set of her favorite TV show where they become two of the show’s main characters 15 years after its ending and are charged with finally giving it a happily ever after. It was told in dual points-of-view, there was a plethora of fabulous one-liners/quotes, and an overall good message about how you view life and friends many years after high school when you thought you knew it all. Pick this up if you are in need of a light, feel-good story.
