For those longing for the nostalgia of watching Dawson’s Creek for the first time as a teen, this is the book for you. Brynn and Josh were two roommates passing in the night until a stranger drops off a cake at midnight on Brynn’s birthday. Without knowing one wish will send them on the mission to complete the story from Brynn’s guilty pleasure show that was cancelled too soon.
Anyone who has ever experienced a show cancelling with no ending, this book will give you the feels of getting to finish a series with the ending you want.
Thank you to Random House for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of the book in order to provide an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing for the eARC for this book. This was a quick and easy but in all honestly I was pretty confused by the premise in the beginning. I don’t think I was expecting the storyline to be so centered around a TV show and not sure this should be marketed as a second chance romance considering the outcome.
Pretty quickly on we’re thrust into the TV series, Carson’s Cove, and it honestly the show felt a bit childish. There was really no intro into the premise and switches from real life to fake seemingly out of nowhere. If you’re a fan of Dawson’s Creek, or honestly even Full House, you will be a fan of this because the show is a mix of that with almost too wholesome, borderline eerie, vibes with cliche life lessons.
The plot was pretty predictable and there are really no surprises or frills but hones in the life lesson that people are supposed to change and grow from who they were when they were younger.
It took me a while to get into the book because it felt like the entire beginning/middle was just telling us what the fictional TV show Carson’s Cove was about and I couldn’t fully get into it until about 65% of the way in where the MC was finally realizing her role was not the same as the fictional character she was portraying. The magical realism portion still didn’t make much sense to me at the end and was really never explained.
Overall I thought the book was fine, I didn’t love it or hate it, but by the end I definitely liked it more than I anticipated, I just wish it didn’t take so long to get to a point from where the author was just telling instead of showing. After a while the TV show premise did start to grow on me and I did start really enjoying the fake characters and the character growth of the FMC.
This was cute. I absolutely adored This Spells Love so I was excited to read this. I liked the concept but I'm not sure it was executed as well as it could have been. If I could give half stars this would be a solid 3.5 stars for me. Since I can't, I've rounded up to 4 stars. I really enjoyed the Dawson's Creek vibes. I used to watch that show religiously back in the day so this felt nostalgic for me. The romance was pretty good too though I'm not sure the main characters had much chemistry. Overall, I liked it. It was good, but not great.
Thank you to NetGalley for the free eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this fun, easy book. It wasn’t predictable at all and I really loved Brynn. My favorite show in high school was Dawson’s creek and this had the same vibes. A perfect read for a rom-com lover.
I received a copy of this for my honest review
This story is Pleasantville meets The CW. Taking your comfort show and proving the grass isn't always greener.
I loved this book! The concept was different and fun. It was full of nostalgia for me. Carson’s Cove definitely had me thinking of Dawson’s Creek which I watched when I was in high school. Everything about this book was great. I immediately wanted great things for Brynn after her introduction to us. I love the setting. I love the concept. I loved the characters. Thank you Random House Publishing Group and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book early.
The second novel from this author is just as engrossing as her first. Brynn is finally getting over the sudden end of her marriage, one she didn't see coming. She is managing the mortgage on her Toronto condo by getting a roommate. Josh works as a bartender at a popular bar and due to his work hours, Brynn doesn't actually see him that often. Brynn's been bingeing on her favourite television series from her teenager years, Carson's Cove, which centered on a group of teenagers on a small New England island town of the same name. One theme of the show was the love of two of the teens, who never expressed their feelings for each other, although several seasons ended in cliffhanger moments. When the series was suddenly cancelled after one of these scenes as Spencer goes off to college and Sloan travels to Paris, fans were left hanging. Brynn just wants a happy ending, for the characters as well as herself.
The book opens as Brynn is out with some friends, more acquaintances really, she uses her familiarity with the bar Josh works at to get the group in, but soon finds herself wishing she was back home in front of the television. When Josh sees her in need of a way home, he ends his shift early and accompanies her home and watches a couple episodes of the show with her. Just as they are both about to call it a day, a delivery person arrives with a birthday cake, which they both have a piece of.
When they awake, they find themselves in the fictional Carson's Cove, with Brynn living as an older Sloan, back in town for a while. Josh finds himself cast as Fletcher, a guy who lives above his aunt's bar, and has a reputation for unreliability and a bad boy.
With Spencer back in town as well, things seem to be set up for the happy ending Brynn has been dreaming of, but is that really the best outcome for the characters.
I liked how Robb teased a bit with the predictable happy ending, but gave the characters more depth, and introduced a new viewpoint into the nature the main as well as the secondary characters, both friends and rivals.
This had me thinking about the new takes on some shows and movies from the past that reveal some problematic situations and personalities as we look back on them from our, hopefully, more enlightened present.
I also liked the inclusion of real Canadian places, like Orillia into the plotline.
Definitely a page turner for me.
This was a cute read. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it kept my attention. I do plan to read more by this author. who doesn't love books about falling in love
This book is the perfect love letter to Dawson's Creek. It was a bit of a mind trip imagining Brynn in the cove while also picturing myself winding up in Capeside on a similar journey. If you are a fan of teen drama on the small screen then you will love this book. I caught all of the easter eggs dropped and finished the book with nothing but smiles.
*Thanks to Random House Publishing Group - Random House via NetGalley for the e-ARC! I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
Also special note to Kate - Team Logan forever! ;)
I completely and totally loved this book, I read it in one sitting in about 5-6 hours. I got sucked in to the story, because I myself have wished I could get pulled into my favorite show/movie/book to live like my favorite heroine. But it also kept me guessing the entire time, and I’m very glad I haven’t been pulled into my favorite fictional world because this book really put that wish into perspective. I’d love to buy a physical copy when I can so I can add it to my “favorites” bookshelf and enjoy it again and again while also being able to actually feel and smell the pages.
✨ARC review✨
Thank you so much @netgalley and @kate_robb_writes for my copy of Prime Time Romance!
This was so different than what I’ve read before and so absolutely FUN to read!! The characters were fun and there was some surprise spice that I was not expecting 😏
But Kate, I would like to talk about why the heck Sheldon scared me LMAO. I don’t know why but I pictured him always being like 👀👀👀 and it spooked me lmao.
The cake recipe at the end, and all the little “Easter eggs” was a super fun addition from the author to her readers. I feel so lucky to have read this early!
Prime Time Romance will be available September 8, 2024
I very much enjoyed this book and these characters so much. I just want to read more by this author as soon as possible and I am so grateful to have gotten the opportunity to read this.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC!
the main plot and storyline of prime time romance was pretty interesting and definitely gave me major teen beach movie vibes - waking up trapped in a tv show and going along with the characters, while trying to figure a way out. i was excited for this after i read the blurb since it’s different from other romance books, but i found it difficult to really get into the story in the beginning. it was better once they ended up in carson’s cove, but i still felt that the writing was a bit weird and the details needed to be connected / smoothed out more. i didn’t feel super connected with the characters and think the romance could’ve been fleshed out more as well. however! i did felt pretty immersed, like i was in an actual romcom show, which was cool ~ all in all, it was an average book (definitely could have been better executed).
3 stars! ⭐️
Prime Time Romance centers around newly divorced, Brynn, and her sexy bartender roommate, Josh. On the night of her birthday, she is home with Josh when someone comes to the door with a birthday cake 🎂. She wishes for something, and next thing she knows... they wake up in her favorite show, Carson's Cove. They can only get home if they fulfill the wish Brynn made that night, so tensions are high!
The concept of this book is an absolute ✨attention-grabber✨ and also what makes this novel so fun! The beginning really hooked me, but it did kind of drag on during the middle. I did thoroughly enjoy getting to know the characters in the show, specifically Luce–she is probably the least cringe of them all. The other characters are so archetypal that they are hard to humanize and see as real people, which adds to the silliness, but lacks depth.
As for the romance, I was rooting for Brynn and Josh from the beginning, but it was very insta-lovey, which I had a hard time with. One moment they were just roommates who ended up in this odd situation together, and the next they were falling in love. I found this not only hard to believe, but also way too fast to allow the reader to form a connection to them. They enter this alternate universe almost immediately, so we barely get any character introduction or development in the real world. I think it needed more of that! The spicy scenes would have been a lot more successful had they created a more solid foundation for Brynn and Josh to grow from. Another small thing that I struggled with was the main characters being referred to as Sloan/Fletch and also as Brynn/Josh. It just didn't make sense sometimes in my opinion.
Overall, this book was a fun, quick read that I would recommend to readers who enjoy a bit of a magical twist in their romances or someone who has a similar affinity to soapy romcoms! 💘
Thank you to NetGalley, Random House Publishing Group & Dial Press, and Kate Robb for the ARC of Prime Time Romance.
The premise of this book is so so cool to me! It reminds me of those episodes in Supernatural and The Fairly Odd Parents where the main characters are sucked into different cartoons/worlds. I always loved those episodes and I really enjoyed this book too. Despite having some major life lessons, this book was pretty light. I ate it up honestly. I also like the progression of Josh and Brynn's relationship. The ending made me think of that one cartoon/book that ended her stories with a "where to next" moment. Overall, I really liked this book.
I went into this ARC without expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Instead of our usual romance fare, the story took a unique twist. The two main characters, who are roommates, embark on a journey through the “space-time continuum” to the set of Brynn's favorite TV show. It's a mix reminiscent of Dawson’s Creek, Gilmore Girls, The OC, and even Buffy The Vampire Slayer (they even mention the Bronze!). Things take unexpected turns, and the touch of magic woven throughout the book made it a captivating read. I highly recommend it. Be careful what you wish for! 4 ⭐️
- [ ] Did someone say Dawson’s Creek (or insert favorite teenage sitcom) in book form? Love the creation of this fictional show within this book. It gave so many warm fuzzies. She created a show that was detailed but vague enough so you could imagine your own favorite teen drama. This is the second of Kate Robb’s books I have read and I love the magical twist she puts in her rom coms. It really makes them stick out. Also, love the shout out to Tim Hortons!🎂🛶🍻🍩🐎👗
I really liked the premise for this but at the end of the day, I don't think it was my favorite. The idea for this book was so unique and I love that the author thought of such a creative story with a twist, however, part of it felt a little slow to me, but that could've been the aspects of an early 2000s show. I loved the characters and how everyone's lives are incorporated - in the show and in real life!
I loved this! I enjoyed the magical realism of Kate Robb’s first book, and this one was just as much fun. This book is so fun and captivating, I loved every second of it!
Received as an arc from NetGalley
What would you do if your favourite teen drama gets cancelled after ending with a cliffhanger the season before? Would you wish to become the lead character and live out the perfect ending you always dreamed of?
Full of quintessential teen drama tropes and coming to terms with the fact that maybe what was perfect then isn't what's perfect now.
I enjoyed the premise of the book, but felt at times the thoughts needed to be elaborated on. At times playing into the one dimensional view we expect from teen shows of the early 2000's and not giving us more depth to the characters.
Since this is Kate's second novel, I'm interested in going back and reading her debut novel.
