I will preface this with saying I am the exact target demo for this book - a millennial who is just old enough to have watched Dawson's Creek, and then been obsessed with the teen TV that came after that. This book was so nostalgic in the best way. It brought me back to the shows, and was a great romance on it's own. I loved the magical realism, and the story that played out because of it. I was hooked from the beginning and needed to know what happened to these characters. P.S. - The dedication of this book is magnificent!
Thank you to Net Galley, and Random House publishing, for allowing me to read the arc of this book. I'm looking forward to buying a physical copy when it comes out.
I really enjoyed this one!! The premise was so cute and I immediately got so many nostalgic vibes reminding me of all the different teen shows I watched when I was younger. I loved Brynn and Josh’s unexpected love story and their journey to get there. The author also tells us all of the little Easter eggs at the end and I loved seeing what connections I made while reading and which ones I missed. What a fun little read!!
Pleasantville meets Dawson's Creek.
The concept of being sucked into AU Dawson's Creek too (accidentally?) live out the Joey/Pacey love story sounded so fun in theory, but in practice was slightly underwhelming. It's possible that this is because this is just less satisfying than the actual Joey/Pacey experience. That's not the author's fault necessarily, it's just not really something that can be replicated.
I did think that this was generally fun and Fine™️, but ultimately forgettable and slightly underwhelming.
I LOVED THIS BOOK.
There were so so so many references to classic teen dramas. This book was so refreshing and I loved the magical realism. The characters here were very well developed, even developing the characters from the show. But the main characters were very enjoyable only once I got about 25% of the way through. It took me a few chapters to really get into the story and the characters, but ultimately, the whole fictional town within the fictional world had my heart and I loved my time with the story and the characters
3.5 stars --- I have to give Kate Robb so much credit for her creative storylines! I don't know how she comes up with these ideas but they are so fun.
In her sophomore novel, 29 year old Brynn is hitting rock bottom. Her happily ever after ended in a surprise divorce and he took all the mutual friends. She thinks her newfound "bitches who brunch" group chat has invited her over to celebrate her big 3-0 but they really only wanted her for her connection to Toronto's hot new bar -- where her roommate Josh works behind the bar.
When a mystery cake arrives at her doorstep and she makes an ill-fated wish for happiness, she wakes up in the town where her beloved comfort show, Carson Cove, is set. Except her roommate Josh is with her -- and in order to get back to their regular life they need to make sure "Sloane" aka Brynn gets the happy ending she never got once the show was cancelled.
This was again cute and enjoyable but there was just something about this plot that didn't work for me. It was SO CLOSE to being as good as Kate's first book, This Spells Love. But the premise for this one felt confusing at times, even when you suspend reality to believe in the "magic". But again kudos to the author for being creative and writing something so different than other contemporary romances on the market!
A beautifully creative rom-com. Brynn’s life looks nothing like she thought it would; divorced and forced to let out her extra room to pay the mortgage, she is second-guessing everyone she thinks she knows about life and love. She spends most nights rewatching episodes of her favorite teenage show, Carson’s Cove, and wishing she could meet an all-American sweetheart like the leading male lead.
An unexpected birthday wish soon lands her and her sexy roommate Josh in Carson’s Cove! Can she right the wrongs of the TV show and see the two main characters are finally given their happily ever after? Or will Brynn learn that just because life isn’t what you thought it would be doesn’t mean it isn’t beautiful and good? Sometimes, the All-American boy next door is not the person you are meant to be with. This book has comedy, depth, and, of course, some sexy sparks flying scenes. I enjoyed this book, and Carson's Cove reminded me a lot of Dawson's Creek, my comfort show, as a teenager living vicariously through my favorite characters.
Disclaimer: While I received a free advanced copy of this novel, my thoughts and opinions on the book are my own.
Giggles and sweet smiles is how this book will make you feel. If you loved 90s/ early 2000 teen dramas this book is for you. It's has the cozy small town feel with a sweet romance. I love the perspective of a 30 yr old Brynn trying to navigate teenage drama but having adult ideas. She makes her own path and owns it. The chemistry with Josh and Brynn is wonderful. There is spice. Amazing read and she will be an auto buy author!
Thank you NetGalley and Dial Press Trade Paperback for the opportunity to read this e-arc. This is my honest opinion
This is a bit of Pleasantville meets Riverdale? A little light and a little dark. I loved the premise - young divorcee Brynn being a hopeless romantic and wanting that HEA, and thinking her favorite tv show from her teen years is idyllic. When a mystery cake is delivered on her birthday, she makes a wish… but the grass isn’t always greener.
Her roommate, Josh gets pulled into the mess when said birthday wish goes awry and they find themselves in an alternate universe by ‘crossing a space-time continuum together that bonds them in weird and wonderful ways.’
Sheldon aka the extra, is the epitome of a character constantly yelling “DO IT FOR THE PLOT!!” never thinking about others, and not contributing much else.
This book is straight plot and no character development. The two MCs, Brynn and Josh, are a bit 2D. I didn’t feel the buildup between the two of them. Of course I knew we’d get there, but I just didn’t feel it between them.
Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing for this eARC.
Thank you to Netgalley.com for the ARC. This novel is for any hard-core fan of television. Those who have dreamt of finishing the unfinished series. Those who want to see where the characters are in the future. What would you do given the chance to live in those shoes. Would you follow the path that looks the best on screen or branch out and find something or someone wonderful and unexpected?
4.5 out of 5 stars.
Have you ever wanted to step into the world of your favorite TV show? Carson's Cove is the popular teen show (think Dawson's Creek) that gets canceled when Brynn is younger, and she spends the rest of her 20's rewatching it whenever her life doesn't go as planned. A random guy shows up on her bday with a cake, asking for a wish, and BOOM, Brynn steps into the shoes of Carson's Cove's main character. The guy with the cake is pretty unhinged, and the plot gets a little corny, but the romance and path of self discovery keep it chugging along. For a sophomore book, this has made me want to go find her 1st one.
From the second I read the Joshua Jackson/Pacey Witter dedication page I was hooked into this. I'm a huge Dawnson's Creek kinda girl and one who was happy with the ending so a story where Pacey gets the girl is sure to be a read for me. Right? Maybe not though and I can't even figure out what it was but somewhere around the halfway point of this story I just put it down and then it took me almost a month to pick it back up. In the end it was cute.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC read. Having read Kate Robb’s book ‘This Spells Love’ I was hoping to get another glimpse at this authors twists and turns in regard to romance! In the beginning, the plot twist had me concerned but it ended up being the perfect small town romance. As far fetched as it may seem, being moved into your favorite tv show is every young girls fantasy. I loved the character development and cute Easter eggs to all the shows I have also loved. Well done Kate!
I really liked the premise of the main characters being transported to Brynn's favorite comfort show. I thought the plot was unique and well constructed, and I bought into it pretty quickly. My big critique of the book was that I felt Brynn and Josh's relationship could have developed a bit more slowly and naturally.
What if you woke up and you were suddenly in your favorite TV show? And you were tasked with creating the ending that the show *should* have had, with your dream TV boyfriend? But you quickly start to realize that maybe the things you used to accept about the show aren’t 100% kosher when you’re actually living in that reality, and that maybe the dream boyfriend isn’t as dreamy as your real-life roommate (who, incidentally, is playing his own part in this little TV show situation)… This was SO MUCH FUN and unapologetically sweet and silly and I loved it. Kate Robb is going on my auto-read author list after this one - that’s two hits in a row.
This was such a cute premise… i enjoyed the whimsy of the narrator wishing for the nostalgic part of her youth, and I did really like the MMC.
I wish I could say I loved this book, but in reality, I could only make it short way in before I gave up. The writing was elementary -- short, non-descriptive and overall just very dull. The characters were so generic that I wondered if they were a product of ChatGPT, and the storyline was so predictable that even though I didn't finish the book, I have a pretty confident idea of how it ended. Regardless, I appreciate the ARC from Kate Robb and Random House Publishing Group - Random House, but this is one I definitely won't be recommending.
This was cute, it reminded me of one tree hill/ Dawsons creek meets haven. I really enjoyed reading. I’m a sucker for a happy ending… just like Brynn. I was happy Brynn and Josh got there happily ever after. I loved the easter eggs from teen shows I watched growing up. I wasn’t expecting it so it was fun putting it together. Thank you for the arc!
I actually really enjoyed all the nods to the 90s/2000s teen dramas, there’s a lot of them and you could make a game out of catching them all! This book definitely gave off could be a CW show vibes, which I personally like. The storyline of having to pretend to be a certain character and dealing with all these characters you loved growing up and figuring out how to reconcile creating the ending you thought you wanted and what might actually be what is needed I had me really interested.
My main problem was that this is a romance and I really did not see the romance develop. There’s some flirting, tension and heated looks/moments but it didn’t make me believe they were in love, into each other? Yes, in love? No. By the time we get to the end it feels a little rushed and didn’t match the pace and vibe of the rest of the book which was a little disappointing.
Overall, fun book with a fun concept but felt a little lacking in the romance area and ending.
I could not connect with either character in this book. Also it was just so cheesy and I did not enjoy it at all.
A fun story for just a cheesy good time!
Our main love interests get sucked into our heroine's favorite TV show...a wholesome teen drama!
They have to act as characters and resolve the shows unsolved relationships and dillemas to find their way back home...
And discover feelings for each other along the way!
A Hallmark Movie like story!
