Who knew there were weight lifting women back in late 1800s, early 1900s. I love picture books, because we find out about people we have never heard of, and it is an easy and quick read.
Katie Sandwina was born into a circus family, and everyone in it was strong, but she was the strongest, and she worked hard to get stronger. Once she realized she could do more, she moved to America and joined the Barnum And Bailey circus.

And if that was all she was famous for, that would be a lot, but apparently she was a suffragist, and also fought for women’s right to vote.
At the end of the book is a brief bio of her history, as well as a photograph of her lifting three full grown men.
Delightful, bright pictures, and easy to understand text. What a great way to learn about someone who should still be famous.

I love children’s books and enjoy finding new ones to add to my family’s collection, but what I especially love are biographies for children. I was not familiar with Katie Sandwina before this book, but am so glad I know about her now! Katie was the strongest woman in the world and a suffragette. She accomplished so much and stayed true to herself while doing it.

The art overall is beautiful, but I absolutely love the inside cover illustration.

This book is an excellent addition to any children’s library!
