A sweet, fun Hanukkah picture book. A great book to give as a present or to read aloud. HANUKKAH PAJAMAKKAH feels so joyous and full of life. It’s a lovely celebration of the holiday.
I thought Ruthie was super cute! Maybe it’s just my mom side talking, but those messy PJs didn’t do it for me. I felt like I needed to wash her clothes every time she got something on them! But I can totally see how kids celebrating Hanukkah or wanting to learn about the holiday traditions would really enjoy this story.
Thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Kids for the opportunity to review this title.
I really liked the artwork in this book and I liked the idea of a book about Hannukah pajamas, but the story fell flat for me and I wasn't sure what the author was trying to accomplish. However, I may just be overthinking it here. Children may relate to the idea of the messiness involved and the different ways to get dirty, but I just wanted to throw the pajamas in the washing machine!
Thank you to NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. Children will enjoy it, though parents may shudder!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher Sourcebooks Kids for giving me an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was so cute! I really loved it!
On the first night of Hanukkah Ruthie receives Hanukkah pajamakkahs and Ruthie wants to wear them all eight nights. Follow Ruthie as her pajamakkahs get dotted and splattered. Will her pajamakkahs make it until the eighth night?
This book celebrates the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah and it was very well written! Well done! I give this book five stars!
As someone who buys their kids (and myself) Hanukkah pajamas every year, I had to read this book. The parents in this book are way more chill than I am, lol. I would have had a heart attack if my kid had worn their Jammie’s all 8 nights and gotten that many stains, splotches, smears, smudges, you name it on them, lol. It’s a very light-hearted story, very playful and silly. But it definitely made me realize I’m never letting my kids wear their Hanukkah Jammie’s all 8 nights, lol.
I received the book for free in exchange for my honest review.
This clever Hanukkah picture book celebrates the holiday with a fun new twist. Every family has their own holiday traditions, and Ruthie's family has a Hanukkah pajama party at the end of the holiday. When Ruthie receives her Hanukkah themed pajamas along with her other presents on the first night of the holiday, she loves them so much that she wants to wear them for the whole eight days. Although she is warned to try and keep them spotless until the party, accidents happen. All the family activities like cooking latkes, eating sufganiyot (Jelly Doughnuts) and chocolate gelt, lighting the candles and various crafts each cause a messy stain on her pj's. But through it all, Ruthie keeps a positive attitude. Her pajamas dont have SPOTs, but streaks and splotches! This charming story which shows a variety of Hanukkah activists, highlight the fact that it is a family holiday. I love the fact that her parents support her desire to wear the pajamas the whole time and accept all the mishaps. The funny story is made that much better with the fantastic colorful illustrations by Olga and Aleksey Ivanov. Their pictures always make a book that much more fun. This book would make a fantastic Hanukkah gift to any Jewish youngster!
This was super cute! Ruthie gets pyjamas and wants to wear them for all eight nights of Hanukkah. The book follows her throughout all eight days and introduces kids to some activities and traditions of Hanukkah. The story and illustrations are wonderful!
I simply loved this little book! I will definitely be buying it for the little ones this holiday season. Ruthie's mess was so relatable, even as an adult. I also loved the way the author pulled in PJs as a Hanukkah tradition, something that is often used for Christmas.
Little Ruthie loves Hannukah, and it’s even better with her brand-new pajamakkahs! In fact, Ruthie loves her new outfit so much she wants to wear it for all eight nights of the Festival of Lights. But keeping her pajamakkahs spotless for over a week soon proves to be a daunting task. Can Ruthie keep her outfit intact for the family pajamakkah party at the end of the celebration?
Hanukkah Pajamakkahs by Dara Henry is a delightful book about a family celebrating an important cultural festival together. The illustrations by Olga and Aleksey Ivanov are full of life, and perfectly showcase the holiday with charming storybook art. Ruthie engages in countless activities alongside her mom, dad, little sister Sarah, and her extended family members as the eight-night celebration continues. From lighting the Menorah to Hanukkah arts and crafts, this book is full of the unbridled joy of celebrating miracles and heroes of the past through the eyes of a child. The only problem for Ruthie is that many of these activities are very dangerous for the spotlessness of her beloved pajamakkahs!
The only detraction in this cheerful tale was that I found myself wondering why Ruthie’s parents didn’t simply wash her pajamakkahs for her during the day. However, Ruthie is never shown during daylight hours in this story, so she may have elected to keep her pajamakkahs on for all seven days as well, which would have made washing them impossible. This would be a totally ‘kid’ thing to do, and I applaud her parents for being so thoughtful and respecting her choices. Beyond this question, the story is absolutely full of fun, and would be an excellent choice for reading together during your very own Hannukah celebration.
A great story for all who love Hanukkah, family fun, and learning more about world culture, this delightful children’s tale is sure to please. Earning five out of five stars for its brilliance in showcasing an important cultural holiday, this lovely story of fun during the festival is a great pick for family and classroom reading. Suitable for readers of all ages, this happy tale of Hanukkah fun shines as brightly as the candles in the family Menorah.
I loved this cute children's book Hanukkah story. I mean what kid hasn't wanted to take off PJs they've gotten for a gift. It was nice to see that it was a Hanukkah story instead of Christmas.
Loved this Hanukkah book! It follows Ruthie and her family through all 8 nights and traditions of Hanukkah, with a PJ party at the end. There are a few antics along the way while trying to keep her pajamas clean until the 8th night.
7 year old approved!
This book is such a fun read and so refreshingly different then other Hanukkah books. We need more books like this-- creative and so adorable you don't even realize you're learning about the holiday! But you do, celebrating along with Ruthie all eight nights by lighting candles, eating donuts, creating menorahs. Plus, readers will find silly wordplay at each page turn. Ruthie, the main character, keeps the reader laughing and engaged. Even if you don't celebrate Hanukkah readers will enjoy reflecting on how their celebrations differ or are similar to Ruthie's. If you're looking for a holiday book for your home or classroom that will keep kids coming back, this is a book for you.
This was an okay book. I liked the art. I wish I had learned something from it.

Thank you for the advanced read copy of this book.
I appreciate that there are more and more Hanukkah books in market these days as there wasn't much when I was a kid.
The premise is cute and I love that the book goes through all 8 nights with different family traditions and components to Hanukkah. I appreciate that it wasn't just 8 nights of presents but really talked about different parts of the holiday that children do - making latkas, playing dreidel, designing menorahs, etc. I also thought the illustrations were great. I appreciated how colorful and detailed they were.
I just don't know if I loved the ending and I think it might fall flat with kids too. I had hoped for a bit more about enjoying the holiday or the fact that she tried to keep it clean. Something to acknowledge that she had a wonderful hanukkah in her new pajamas.
Thank you for writing a cute Hanukkah story.
This is a wonderful introduction to Hanukkah. I love that it revolves around pajamas which many kids get for many holidays which allows connections to be made. I love the main character's energy and this would make such a fun classroom read aloud.
I loved learning more about Hanukkah and found this book absolutely delightful! The story features an adorable main character, Ruthie, who receives pajamakkahs on her first night of Hanukkah and is so excited that she wears them all eight nights of the holiday! I really enjoyed seeing all the fun that Ruthie had each night and appreciated her positive attitude and flexibility when things didn’t go quite as planned. The illustrations are cheery, bright, and added another layer of joy to this wonderful book. Filled with humor, heart, and celebration on every page, readers everywhere will cherish this book during the holiday season and beyond!
(Thanks to NetGalley and the author for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review!)
When Ruthie is gifted brand new Hanukkah pajamas, she's committed to keeping them spotless for her family's party. Well, that is until the fun of the holiday quickly catches up. Drinks and wax, tape and glitter, and much more all combine to create a fun (but messy) testament to her eight nights of holiday activities.
This is such a cute book, and the illustrations are adorable to match. Perfect to complement learning about and/or celebrating Hanukkah. ♥
Ruthie is adorable and relatable! The fact that she is determined to wear her pajamas all 8 nights , messes them up but keeps a positive optimistic attitude is a great lesson. The illustrations are beautiful! I also love the representation for the Jewish culture as well. It’s so important to have books like this on
This is a cute story about wearing Hanukkah pajamas for all eight nights. She gets them messy but still wants to keep on wearing them.
Lots of traditions shown throughout the book.
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC.
A very cute and messy book about a girl, Ruth, who wears her favorite pajamas all eight nights of Hanukkah. It's a colorful, fun, and silly book for all ages.
