This story was not my cup of tea, but I give it points for its unique concept! The story introduces readers to a variety of witches who all have different pets in the form of poems. The poems were a little bit TOO out there for me, but I loved that the illustrator drew witches of all different sizes, ethnicities, and locations. It was clear that both the author and illustrator worked together to ensure that there was a wide array of women represented in the story which I appreciated!
This is an okay read. The rhyme and illustrations were fun to read and look at. I like seeing different animals as familiars, however, I still want to see cats.
This book was adorable! I love the diversity of the characters and the artwork was very cute and detailed as well! I love how well all of the witches match their companions and help each other out as well! <3
A cute children’s book about all sorts of different witches with all sorts of different familiars that is great for reading at any time of the year. I loved the illustrations with their adorable little rhymes! I really enjoyed seeing the depictions of different animals and how they are all help their witches in specific ways. The message that this book sends is simple and positive and prompts you think creatively about the different animals you know and how they could help you—magically or not. Overall, this book is a cute read that I thoroughly enjoyed.
How often have you heard of witches, and their peculiarities. A lot.
Now as yourself, how much have you heard about their pets, ranging from animals big to small? Not much.
This is a cool book for young children and the illustrations are fantastic. A good read for your young ones.

This is a very cute book to read. Witches and their familiars, we are so use to witches having plain black cats, usually. These witches has changed everything when it comes to familiars. Now they are dogs, crabs and tortoises and more. Loved it because of the wackiness. Fun story to read to your children!!
I received a free copy of the book and is voluntarily writing a review
This book features different witch's pets from around the world. The witches are modern and live in various ways and places. The rhyming scheme is odd and it made me wonder if it is a translation as the author/ illustrator is German. I didn’t connect with the story when I think of witches and familiars I think of magic. Here the pets were doing normal things like a giraffe helping a witch reach high places or a crab used for grabbing things. Also the photos didn’t match the rhymes. For example the rhyme says the squirrel will fetch the witch nuts but she uses it to dust. Thank you to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for the temporary ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review. I love this book so much! First so many adorable animals and some of them are not what you traditionally find in children's books. But what I love more than anything is how diverse the witches are. I can't wait for this book to be ready to purchase. I will absolutely be adding it to my personal collection of picture books.
5 stars
What a fantastically fun story about witches and their unusual companions. We are used to cats but in this tale the witches have monkeys, tortoises and pigs. Just to name a few.
It doesn’t matter the time of year a good witches tale can be read all year round.
The story is told in a rhyming style which really helps the story to flow.
A very sweet collection of classic nursery rhyme type poems accompanied by incredible illustrations of witches from around the world. So whimsical and fun for your witchy kids or perhaps for a Halloween bedtime story or Boo Basket! I also loved the easy to follow poems and rhyme schemes, which I am sure will inspire the braver readers to try and write some of their own verse!
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC!
Wacky Witches and Their Peculiar Familiars is a wonderful picture book. Every animal familiar is unique and performs different tasks suited to their witch. The art is charming and colorful with lots of details to pick out. And the rhymes are quite clever. I’ll definitely be getting a copy for my niece and nephew (and maybe myself 😉).
Thank you to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for the opportunity to review this book.
Some of the poems are a little better than others, but overall this book is very cute a whimsical. I enjoyed all the different witchy illustrations and situations. Overall, a really sweet and cute book about different pets/familiars.
Thank you to NorthSouth Books and NetGalley for the e-ARC of this title to read and review. What a fun rhyming tale of the coolest, and most stylish, witches around - and their cute animal familiars. With a cast of diverse witches and adorable illustrations, this was a joy. I think younger kids would enjoy the rhymes read aloud to them - but I know a 9-year-old in my life who would be SO into reading this on her own and poring over all of the drawings for fun details.
I read this book with my children.
We really enjoyed this book. It is definately geared for slightly older children — my 8 year old loved it, but my 5 year old only liked it.
The rhyming phrase was good, if sometimes a little odd. But getting to meet all of the witches and their animals was lovely.
The illustrations were fabulous. While not overly bright, there was a lot to look at on most pages, which was a fun addition.
Recommend for slightly older children.
Thank you so much to NorthSouth Books and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
This was so unique and I really liked it, each witch looked so different, lived so differently, made their potions differently so it was wonderful seeing which animal suited them the most. As you turn the page you never expect the next animal you are going to see with the witch.
There are so many things to look at on each and every page, it makes it such a wonderfully interactive book that children are going to honestly adore, with each witch being different no two images are the same at all. It’s very diverse and very creative, the writing is beautifully done and flows really nicely.
I do recommend this one, I think children will find it very funny, its very wacky and different, the animals are all so unexpected, there is so much to see on each page and it’s very fun and easy to read.
This is absolutely perfect. I was just talking to my youngest about familiars and how they can help protect her in her dreams (she has a lot of nightmares) she is going to absolutely love this book. It is cute and quirky and perfect for the little witchlings in your house!
I thought this was going to be something else, tbh. A picture book about witches.
And... it was mostly rhymes about some witches and it wasn't quite interesting nor captivating.
The illustrations, however, were the cutest thing ever.
I'm a sucker for colorful, beautiful illustrations, and this delivers that. I loved the art! The rhymes are lovely, every witch is unique, and I think any kid would love this.
Although it is written for children, it is wonderfully designed, attracting even adults to read it and interact with its exciting events. I really enjoyed it
What a delightful book! I loved the unique premise and all of the different animal familiars. I have always loved witchy stories ever since I was a child, and I can't wait to add this to my children's book collection. I loved all of the different witches' appearances, and the illustrations were colorful and detailed. I've always thought my familiar would be a cat, but I might need to consider raccoons as an option.
I received an ARC from NorthSouth Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
