Bugs and socioemotional learning? That’s what we call a win-win. This is a fun, boldly illustrated picture book about a moth that stands out with all the best reminders to be true to yourself. It was a bit too young for my readers, all age 8 and up, but a perfect gift for my friends’ 5 year old twins. Love this series and loved this book especially. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy. All opinions are entirely my own.
This was so fun! A cute, quick read for younger audiences about being brave & rocking to your own beat. Loved the little mini lessons on being true to yourself, trying something new, and loving who and what you are!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher
Goth Moth was a cute wee story, for a school-age level. I loved the illustrations!
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This was a very cute children's story. My 2nd grader and I really enjoyed the art style and she was able to read the book to me with very minimal assistance. She enjoyed the rhyming and silly rock band names. While I enjoyed that message of the book encouraged her to be who she is, even if that person is a little different. Loved this book and we will be looking at buying a physical copy for her shelf soon.
Sweet an quriky book off the BEATen path. Quick read that will entertain not only the little ones. Beautiful addition to the band of bugs! The lovely illustrations by Wiebke Rauers are always a feast for the eyes, this time especially. Lovely addition to every bookshelf, not only for picturebook-lovers but music enthusiast as well!
Thank you to Netgalley for being able to provide this book. This is the perfect example of something I wouldn't have found in the sections I frequent at a bookstore but would be right up my alley. I read this book in one sitting and it's quite a sweet story. Moth doesn't have friends but its super into music. Perfect for kids and adults! specially during the spooky month of the year
Thanks to Netgalley, NorthSouth, and Kai for an advance copy of Goth Moth.
Goth Moth is a story about a shy little moth who doesn't seem to fit in and he finds himself at a rock concert.
As a kid who wasn't exactly shy, but did listen to music that wasn't mainstream or 'cool' this was a fun story to see told to kids.
The band names are so funny for adults and even kids who are interested in music might pick up on them. The illustrations are gorgeous.
Luke had this to say: “I love this book because he wanted to play drums and I love drums. He was also really cute. Jitterbugs name was so funny! I think his spider friend was a black widow.
Goth Moth is a cute story with a unique character. I think this would be a good recommendation for a child who feels different or lonely. The art was great - exaggerated in that Pixar kind of way. The character was unique (We need more moth characters!), and the story delivers what you expect. I think the story would also appeal to adults, tapping into that 90s and early 2000s nostalgia.
Goth Moth by Kai Lüftner and illustrated by Wiebke Rauers. This is a sweet children’s book about Walter who in the book is called Goth Moth he is a bug who loves to dance and rock his dream is to meet his favorite musician and at first the music is only in his head until his wish comes true. This is a cute book with stellar rhyming and I must be honest the whole time I read this children’s book I kept thinking of Wham’s song jitterbug. I found the pictures were colorful and the story to be oh so sweet. #North-southBooks, #NetGalley, #GothMop,
Such a cute book with great illustrations. The concept f the story is bought across in a visually appealing way with a distinct and enrapturing art style. Kids will definitely enjoy this.
I loved it and think it will be loved by children
A more extensive review will follow
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
This might have been more enjoyable if I had read the whole series. The story is of a male recluse that wants to be a drummer, so he has to go out at daytime to see his favorite band and (female) drummer play. Somehow he ends up becoming the drummer on stage at the show? It's a little unclear how that happens and perhaps a bit dangerous to suggest to kids that all you have to do is show up and your dreams will be exceeded. I wasn't a fan of the pink ascribed to the girl characters and hints that they would be "more than friendly" with each other. Other than making a nice rhyme, there isn't much goth involved in the story - more of a punk rocker vibe.
Might be good to pair with a rock concert outing or for a musically inclined young reader. The graphics are freaking adorable!
Goth Moth is an adorable illustrated book in rhyming verse for the youngest kids by Kai Lüftner. Due out 3rd Sept 2024 from North South, it's 32 pages and will be available in hardcover format.
The art is by Wiebke Rauers and is so whimsically appealing. The characters are diverse cute monsterish spiders, beetles, and other bugs and have different shapes and colors which are mirrored in the text. The illustrations throughout are cute, colorful, and full of small details which invite readers to spend a little more time looking at the pictures and thinking about the text. The story has simple thought provoking takeaways about coming out of our shells, following our dreams, and even being in the limelight sometimes.
The text is very simple and should be accessible to even the youngest readers. The translation work by Tim Mohr is seamless and the scansion of the rhyming text flows very well in English.
It's a valuable little book on several levels and will provide opportunities with a teacher/facilitator/parent/babysitter to find and identify and learn about emotions and how we can enjoy our talents and follow dreams.
Four and a half stars. It would be a nice choice for school or public library acquisition, gift giving, and home use.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes
Goth Moth is an absolutely adorable early elementary school read that is bound to make all ages smile.
A shy moth named Walter, faces his fears to meet his idol at her rock show, and gets to do his favourite thing ever…play the drums!
The illustrations in this book are beautiful, adorable and creative - I cannot get over how cute Walter is, with his Goth style hair and skulls on his wings. I want a print of Walter to hang on my wall!
Thank you to NetGalley for this digital advanced copy to read and review.
cutie! It was so adorable following this moth in the realization of his dream. Picture are a bonus because I loved the style a lot!
Goth Moth is a cute story for those want to be musicians out there. This one hit home with my grandkids, as my oldest grandson played drums for a while when he was younger and still sits at them sometimes to play. I think this book might have rekindled his interest and the younger two seemed interested in playing the drums at home. Walter, aka Goth Moth, wants to play the drums and makes lots of noise at night (when he is awake) which bothers the other residents in the house. He idolizes Jitterbug, a member of an insect band. When they play a concert close by, he gets the opportunity to play real drums with the band.
The illustrations are amazing, and Walter is such an adorable moth. He has skulls on his wings, and the colours of browns, gray and darker tones are perfect for this book. I loved the album covers on the last page, and I think adults will find them a lovely tribute to music of their youth. The text is done in a rhyming format with a good cadence, only causing me a stumble a couple of times. The vocabulary was age appropriate, with a few more difficult words to have us discussing what they meant (ie: percussion, transfixed). I liked the message in this story of following your dreams and not giving up, taking a chance to pursue the dream and in this case, meeting someone who inspired him. This is a fun book that will appeal to young children and older ones as well, especially those who might be starting out in a musical venture.
Aww I wish this book was around when my nephews were little (they play drums and bass) I would have totally read this cute little book to them.
Not your average bright primary color kids book. The illustrations are on the darker (color not feeling) side but still so cute.
A fun book, but one that stumbles on its way to what successes it has - at least, in the English translation. Goth Moth is a loner, living in a forest and drumming silently in his head, for fear of making enemies out of any of the other forest-dwelling critters. His biggest wish is to attend a gig from his favourite rock-n-rolling bug, but that means leaving home in the daytime, and being distracted by all the bright lights… Until it doesn't, here's there, everything is tickety-boo and the bug is doing a Dave Grohl and inviting an audience member to thrash the drums for a few minutes, the end.
There's a surprisingly cute approach here, to the moth hero if nothing else, and the artwork makes some unusual decisions, such as building up from old scraps of newspaper semi-buried in some kind of collage, but you have to get over the fact the book spends so much energy building up the problem that GM cannot go to the gig, then has him there the next page, with no narrative or logic in between. Generally the story has come across well, especially as it has had to be in rhyme as well as translation, but I can't get over the nonsensical way everything suddenly switches to the positive.
Thank you Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. These opinion are completely my own.
I loved learning about Goth Moth and his need to rock. I also love the reappearance of Jitterbug, a favorite children's book of mine. Great story.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Goth Moth is a cute picture book about a little moth called Walter who's nicknamed Goth Moth because he loves to listen to and play rock music, albeit in his head and not out loud because he is very shy. One day he goes out during the daytime instead of at night and sees his favourite rock idol Jitterbug live in concert and has the most amazing time being with people just like him and joining in all the fun.
I loved the diversness of this book, and the rock band names were just hilarious. This is a story to charm and encourage those like Goth Moth who are a little different and unique and to help them see that stepping out of their comfort zones once in a while can be an amazing thing.
