Goth Moth is a fun fusing of image and story. The art is eye-catching and the story is enjoyable. Lots of engagement for young readers, as well as older readers who can appreciate what the picture book can offer.
This was a really cute little book! The self acceptance message was on point and the illustrations were unique.
Oh my goodness, what a cute little book! This is exactly the kind of book I read to my kiddos. I plan to share it with them when it is published.
I received this copy as a NetGalley arc with no compensation for my opinions.
Thank you for inviting me to read this book.
Lately children’s books are hitting me right in the feels. If I may be so bold as to say its a message to my inner child but lets leave psychology to the professionals and not get into the ugly nitty gritty stuff.
So let’s jump right into the review. The illustrations were engaging and admirable. The poetic prose was fresh and incredibly interesting. As a kid I used to love deducing what the moral of the story was and I’d always love the conclusion or the essence of the story. The inner child in me loved the moral of the story, loved the subtle messages. In order to enjoy life, to explore your potential, to do things you love, one needs to get out of their comfort zone. To keep fear at bay and take a leap of faith and you’ll witness how your life changes for the better.
It also hints at how no matter what you do you’ll never appeal to everyone, there will be people who’ll still find faults in you. So you need to live your truth!
Thats the moral of the story: LIVE YOUR TRUTH.
And that is a very powerful and positive message that we need to feed our little ones from a very young age.
So I highly recommend this book
For the younguns who lean towards darker tales, Goth Moth has plenty of creepy illustrations to keep you fascinated and a surprisingly upbeat story that challenges you to follow your rockstar dreams. I loved it!
Thank you to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
Goth Moth by Kai Luftner is an adorable story about a shy moth named Walter who longs to rock just like his idol, Jitterbug. I loved the originality of the story and illustrations, and thought that this was a completely fresh take on the universal theme of remaining true to yourself and your dreams. 4.5 stars
Many thanks to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books Inc. for an ARC.
What an adorable book about a moth that wants to see his favorite artist, Jitterbug, perform.
The illustrations were adorable and the story was super cute.
My kids enjoyed reading this one with me!
Loved it! What a cute book! I really enjoyed both the graphics and the story here. As a former somewhat goth, I immediately wanted this when I was sent the widget.
The graphics are a bit darker in color than a lot of our other children’s books but the images are awesome and fit the story well. I enjoyed how the colors were toned down a bit and my daughter seemed to really like it too.
I saw that the author and illustrator are both German, which I love since I’m German too. I’m definitely considering trying to get this book in both languages for my daughter. The story was fun and though sometimes the rhythm of the English translation felt a tad off, it was still really fun to read together.

This was a pretty cute story about a goth
Moth that loves to drum. I thought the characters were pretty relatable and very cute. The illustrations are really unique. Unfortunately I did find the overall writing didn't flow super well and was difficult to read aloud.
Thank you to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books Inc for this advanced reader copy. My review is voluntarily my own.

Goth Moth has always felt the rhythm - but he keeps it inside. He doesn't have any way to bring his thoughts to life. One day, he hears that his favorite rockstar, Jitterbug, is coming to town, but it means he will have to go out in the daytime to attend her concert. What happens when Goth Moth lets the light in?
Goth Moth’s main character is a moth who loves rock n roll and longs to be a drummer. While he doesn’t have his own drumset he dreams of one day meeting his rock and roll idol and practices air drumming- where he doesn’t actually make noise at all. This story features a cute and relatable character (I can see kids who like rock n roll and goth style being drawn to this picture book). The rhyme scheme keeps the pacing of the book going and adds a level of accessibility for struggling readers. Overall, this is a recommended read for grades K-3.
Bravo! What a wonderful book! Goth Moth (a.k.a. Walter) is a moth that wants to be a rock drummer. He ventures out to see his favorite rockstar (Jitterbug_ perform and falls in love with the experience of live rock music. There is a prequel to this book (Jitterbug) but it is not necessary to buy both books. The illustrations are fabulous and truly capture the goth motif. There are even little nuggets for the adult readers (i.e. band names changed on album covers... Moth Crue, Iron Mantis, Metallicicada) Clever as all! The rhyme flows easily and I can see small children requesting this book repeatedly.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read in exchange for an honest review.
There is so much to love about this book! The detailed illustrations, the wonderful vocabulary, and the rhyming prose. It's delightful and fun story to follow up Jitterbug. I like how it shows that stepping outside of your comfort zone can lead to something great.
I was first drawn to this book because of the fun cover! My four year old enjoyed the book. He loved seeing a moth play the drums. The illustrations are fun and engaging and match perfectly with the overall them of goth. My only issue was the rhyming text. It was difficult to read at times and didn’t flow well. Overall a cute story for young readers with a fun message.
Acherontia atropos are the most metal moths and Walter is certainly no exception. A shy nocturnal moth that dreams of being a drummer. To make that dream reality he’ll have to go out in the daytime and take his spot on stage. A rockin good time and a fabulous follow up to Jitterbug
I received and ARC of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I love the idea behind this story. It will definitely appeal to a certain demographic. The art is cute-Goth Moth is adorable. I didn't love the rhythm of the story. I think it could have done without the rhyming. Some word choices were definitely stretched just to make it work. Still, I think this is a book that kids will like.
You can't send me a book called "Goth Moth" and not expect to immediately pick it up! Send me all the Goth Moth merch, please. Goth Moth wants to be a drummer, but he doesn't have a drum set! An opportunity to live out his dreams comes true, with one of his favorite bands! The storytelling that Luftner has created is fun, spirited, and includes lots of sounds that will keep kids engaged and excited for this introverted bug. My only note is the rhyming is a bit imperfect and the rhythm was sometimes hard to get right as I was reading it aloud. I hope that Goth Moth has more adventures in the future! Thanks to NetGalley for an early review copy, all opinions are my own.
This book fell short from my expectations, the goth moth wants to play the drums, but doesn't have a drum set. One day he has the opportunity to play on stage with his favorite band, and he rocks it! There were beautiful illustrations, but the story has a narrow scope and might struggle to connect to a wider audience. The rhyming scheme was hard to read at times, but overall cool idea!
Walter was so cute. The depiction of how he did what he enjoyed, even when those around him simply didn't. Not because he was being loud or disorderly, but simply because he existed it doing what he loved. The way Walter went ahead, even scared, to do something that went against his norm JUST to have a beautiful and fun experience and he made some new friends.
First, I loved how a lot of the insects in this book have long hair. The illustrations were pretty cool.
We volunteered to read a copy of this ARC through NetGalley.
Delightful!
In a dark world of quiet, creepy crawlers, be a goth moth. Pound your drum and find your sound! I loved the joy music brings Goth Moth and the lengths they'd go to to find it.
