Loved this story! The characters were so unique and relatable, and their journeys were really moving to see. The setting was a character all its own! This was my first book by the author, and it will not be my last! Highly recommend!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Six years after her marriage crumbled apart, Avalee Elvis is part of a renovation team restoring a tiny abandoned town in South Carolina. She quickly realizes that her ex-husband Rowan Murray is also part of the team. After her initial panic, they are forced to work together to redeem the town, and perhaps their relationship.
There is a lot to say about this one! It's a great book! Starting with Avalee, her inner monologue is so colorful and funny. Rowan is amazing. I love the other characters as well. They all seem like friends now! I love their relationships with each other, too. There was a chapter or so with some innuendos (and later a non-descript skinny dipping scene) that made me feel awkward, but as I always say, I am at least close to being a prude. It was hilarious that Rowan was concerned that Des was a threat. The man is a designer, doesn't like to get his hands dirty, and has monogrammed handkerchiefs. I love the guy, but I am positive he's not out to steal anyone's woman, if you know what I mean. I wish we got to meet Rowan's family. Lots of heavy emotions scattered through the book. The detailed memories Avalee shares give the characters and their story amazing depth. She mentions once not getting any of the big happies in life, but she has more than she realizes. Also, single does not mean alone. Love the town restoration, but it would have been interesting to see the film crew more. This book is a treasure!
Not my favorite story, just because it seemed to drag on a bit, but if you like southern fiction, you'll probably like this book! The story has a lot of people dealing or not dealing with issues, but after a lot of struggles, it turns out well in the end. I do like some of the characters, especially the grandma, Bash, Avalee, and Rowan.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance e-copy of this book. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
A new start doesn't negate the past. It learns from the roots of history and blooms into a better version.
Avalee Elvis and her business partners at Lowcountry Lost are experts at recycling at a high level. Their current project is taking a South Carolina ghost town and turning it into a destination for locals and tourists. The name of the town will be Somewhere.
The restoration taking place to build Somewhere throws light onto the ghost town Avalee has inside. When her ex-husband Rowan joins the project she just wants to avoid him and the pain of their past. She just might find that as Somewhere comes to life, new growth and hope will beckon. A stray dog named Preacher, found with a stash of missing items in the former town chapel, helps bring healing.
This life-affirming read was a balm to my heart as our extended family has experienced loss in so many ways in this past year. Avalee's history is heartbreaking. Will the Creator give her the new start she needs?
Thank you to RB Media for an audio advance copy through NetGalley and to Tyndale House for a digital advance copy -- also through NetGalley. Highly recommended!
As a co-owner of Lowcountry Lost, a company that rehabs old buildings, Avalee wears overalls and a hard hat. But below that hardhat is a hard head and a hardened and bruised heart. On the job to bring a ghost town in Somewhere, South Carolina back to life, she is shocked to find that the engineer for the project is her ex husband, Rowan Murray.
This story is a look at a painful past and how to get beyond that pain. “A new start doesn’t negate the past. It learns from the roots of history and blooms into a better version.”
Avalee compares herself to a ghost town: “once flourishing yet now just so dang exhausted.” She puts her all into the re-making of the town of Somewhere, and in the process, reclaims the love she thought she lost forever.
The characters were realistic and well drawn, the plot so interesting with the construction work needed to give the town a complete overhaul. A favorite character was Bash, a teen who helped on the crew. Preacher, the dog who liked to sleep in the chapel, stole the show, along with various other items. But the clincher was the reconnection and healing of Avalee and Rowan.
Along with the drama, there was a ton of fun and some witty banter and deep spiritual lessons.
This was an outstanding Southern Comfort story from a talented author.

I really enjoyed this book. It tells the story of Avalee and she overcomes grief and through her work is able to forgive and end up with a happy ending. This is a good clean book .
This is the third book I've read by this author. I'm a huge renovations fan, which is what pulled me into wanting to read this book. The characters were likeable and the story line was good. Like others have mentioned, there were a few innuendoes/suggestive lines that raised my brows, but nothing too over the top. There is tough subject matter, but that is how life goes. A part of me felt that Avalee's past behavior that led to the end of her and Rowan's relationship was a tad bit unrealistic, but overall I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes second chance at love and renovations. Thank you to NetGalley and Tyndale for giving me this opportunity to read this book for my honest review.
Fans of T.I. Lowe will enjoy this new novel. The main character spends her days bringing life to towns that have fallen into disrepair, and is more comfortable in overalls and solitude than with people. She rarely lets anyone into her inner thoughts, where she is still struggling with grief after miscarriages and the end of her marriage. The author does a great job of mirroring the character's desire to bring life back into towns with her longing for a renewal of her family bonds. While there are some tough issues that deserve a bit of a warning for readers, there is also a beautiful ending that allows hope to grow in hearts that have held onto pain for far too long.
This title has so many of my favorite tropes: second-chance romance, found family, overcoming grief, saving the town, etc. This title deals with a lot of heavy topics, but it's so beautifully written and the emotion is on point. Not only are the MC's likable and relatable, the secondary characters are so charming and lovable. I thought the author did an amazing job of writing about such difficult subjects in such a respectful way. This title delivers raw emotion while remaining engaging and also including tasteful humor. This is my first title by T.I. Lowe and it won't be my last.
I loved this story! The very first line sucked me in and I became so invested in these characters and their lives that I felt like I was living it with them. T. I. Lowe is one of my favorite authors so I expected nothing less. Everything I have read by her has been so well written and completely immersive.
I loved both Rowen and Avalee and wanted to know their entire story from beginning to end. While we eventually get it, I was flipping the pages as fast as I could to try and figure it out. I felt their heartbreak through the pages. The pain they went through and how it affected them individually and their marriage was heartbreaking. I loved watching Avalee heal and I loved how Rowan helped her through it. Speaking of Rowan, wow, what a great character! I absolutely loved his personality and his dedication to Avalee! When we find out his story of healing, my heart literally ached for him. I really enjoyed all of the secondary characters and the depth they added to this story!
Lowcountry Lost, while heavy at times, is also full of healing, humor, southern charm, and wonderful characters! Do not miss it!
I both purchased and received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own. 5 stars! The faith thread is light.
4.5 stars
I never simply ‘read’ a book by T.I. Lowe. I experience it. The lifelike characters become dear friends, my inner voice develops a sassy southern twang, and for as long as it takes me to reach the end, I’m living every word. Mostly, I’m giggling, grinning, or swooning while doing so, but there’s always a moment (or two or three) in one of Lowe’s books where I suddenly find myself sobbing, my heart touched to the point of tears. Lowcountry Lost is no exception… but it IS exceptional.
Avalee is a bit of a hot mess, and I love her for it. She’s sassy but big-hearted, she’s most at home in her Carhartts but she indulges in colorful manicures on a regular basis, she successfully restores whole towns but runs off & hides when a certain swoony Irishman from her past rolls into town. She’s coming from a place of great pain and loss, seeing herself as the ghost towns she revitalizes and closing herself off in certain ways, but her ‘Somewhere’ bucket list lets us see past her walls in ways we wouldn’t have otherwise. Speaking of that swoony Irishman, whew! Keep a fan close by whenever Rowan is on the page because wowza. His accent, his wink, his cheeky side (uh… in more ways than one lol), his steadfast pursuit of Avalee, his own heartbreak. Ok, apparently I need a fan to write this review… Ahem. It’s not all sparks and passion, though. Their story… their past… their shared grief… man it undid me. Absolutely gorgeous and heartfelt writing from Lowe and a compassionate handling of difficult topics. And y’all, the healing they experience, the restoration of more than just a town, I can’t even put into words how beautiful it is or how it knit my undone heart back together.
A discussion of Lowcountry Lost wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the array of delightful secondary characters that help make this book impossible to put down. Des, Nita, Froid & Fred, Maudie, even the town of Somewhere… and my personal favorites Bash, Koda, and Preacher. Each of these colorful personalities brings their own special recipe of humor, heart, and life to the story, and each has an important role to play in the protagonists’ growth across the novel. They may technically be ‘only’ supporting players in the overall plot but their contributions are crucial nonetheless. Without them, this story wouldn’t be the same.
Bottom Line: In Lowcountry Lost, T.I. Lowe delivers a beautifully layered, engaging, vibrant, and even at times raw story of loss, grief, healing, grace, hope, love, restoration, redemption and, yes, romance. The demo and revitalization of Somewhere, the delightful characters, and the author’s pitch perfect writing voice make this novel supremely entertaining. But it’s the demo of Avalee’s emotional walls and the exquisitely tender restoration of her heart and Rowan’s (among others) that make it unforgettable. Fans of heartfelt Southern fiction, second chances, lots of chemistry, and shows like Home Town will definitely love Lowcountry Lost, but this exceptional story should be read for so many more reasons than those.
Reviewer’s Note: Readers may want to be aware that there are certain plot points that may be emotionally difficult for those who have experienced a particular form of loss.
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.)
I am beyond in love with this story of love, loss, and what happens when we choose to move on from devastation.
The story of Avalee is one that will stay with me for a long time. I myself struggle with pulling back and retreating into myself when dealing with tragedy. Avalee’s story is a fantastic reminder of choosing to move forward rather than isolate ourselves further. I will be thinking about this book for a long time!
Lowcountry Lost, a beautifully written emotional story about forgiveness, and second chances. T. I. Lowe, dealing with some very heavy topics, which she handled with grace and sensitivity, kept me engaged throughout this touching, romantic, tragic story with a sprinkling of humorous moments.
Lowe, penned another exquisite story that will pull at your heartstrings. With her imperfect, relatable characters, that one cannot help but fall in love with, and knack for creating a scene that is so realistic you could touch it, readers will have a hard time leaving Somewhere, South Carolina when this story comes to an end. Lowe surrounded her two main characters with a great cast of minor characters in this book, a grandmother, various contractors working on the job, a young homeless boy, and a mischievous dog. One cannot help but cheer for all of the characters in this story as you read it.
Having personally gone through some of the same experiences as Avalee, I was able to relate with this character like no other in my lifetime. Feeling every emotion right along with her was not only heart wrenching but healing too. Lowe brought out long suppressed emotions, and by doing so, actually helped me finally deal with them in a positive light. Avalee spends her days renovating neglected properties, and sleepless nights reliving the worst days of her life until her estranged ex-husband of six years, Rowen, turns her world upside down. Rowan, nicknamed Rowdy by Maudie, Avalee’s eccentric grandmother who raised her, is a structural engineer brought in by the investors of the project. Avalee begrudgingly working with Rowen discovers that he too went through the same heartbreak as her, but more so as he lost her as well. Together will they repair their relationship or continue as separate ghost towns after they renovate this one? Can Rowen convince Avalee to forgive herself so she can begin to heal?
Lowe, in her remarkable way, reminded me that no-one is ever alone as God is always there if we open our hearts to him. She also reminded me that through faith and love we can find healing and happiness even when the worst situations possible are thrown into our path. I have read all of T. I. Lowe’s wonderful contemporary Christian romance books, and in my opinion, Lowcountry Lost is her best writing to date.
A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Tyndale House Publishers via Net Galley through Interviews & Reviews. I was not obligated to write a favorable review, and all opinions are my own.
This story was a wonderful read.
Avalee runs a construction business called Lowcountry Lost. As she rebuilds the deserted town, we see that her own life has a chance at renewal. She has an emotional history of loss with structural engineer Rowan. Seems this project might give them the time they need to have their relationship rehabbed as well. Avalee is deeply private about her past and her emotions. Rowan is strong, sure of his purpose, observant, intuitive, protective, provider. ALL the things! I found myself invested in the remake of the town, and the repair of Avalee and Rowan’s relationship.
T.I. Lowe did a fantastic job world world-building. She created characters that are both relatable and with a depth that we continue to discover more as the pages turn. The construction crew at Somewhere, South Carolina is a community that one would like to be a part of with a sense of family that is both protective and playful. The story has the perfect balance of sadness and humor. She also managed to weave a couple of mysteries into a love story.
This is the first book I have read from this author. I definitely will be reading more from her. Those who enjoy a cozy mystery, a sweet romance and a little bit of humor along the way will add this to their list of favorites.
I received a complimentary copy of this book courtesy of Tyndale Publishers via NetGalley through Interviews & Reviews for my honest opinion.
Avalee Elvis describes herself as a ghost town, much like the ghost town in South Carolina her renovation company, Lowcountry Lost, is about to bring back to life. She carries with her the brokenness of her past, but unlike the buildings she hopes to restore, she keeps her pain buried in the past. That all changes when Rowan Murray arrives to town as the engineer on Avalee’s latest project. Rowan played a major role in Avalee’s past. Back then they were inseparable, but now Avalee wants to avoid Rowan at all costs so she doesn’t have to face what happened.
This is my second T.I. Lowe book. And just like Indigo Isle, she nails writing extremely broken but likable characters. Not unrealistically broken, but people who have faced real trials, bear the scars, and are working towards healing. Like real life, there’s some heartbreak and ugly to process before all’s said and done. I loved the supporting characters like Bash, Des, and Froid and Fred— those last two were a hoot! And while I had an idea how Avalee and Rowan’s story would ultimately end up, there were plenty of surprises along the way that made this redemption story sweeter!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy in exchange for an honest review.
This one's rather heart wrenching, in a good way!
The main character and all her complexities, including her difficult back story, are revealed one tiny piece at a time.
This caught my attention immediately!
I also loved her occupation - renovating an old ghost town and bringing it back to life.
this story has many intriguing characters, and i couldn't help but love all (well, almost all!) of them.
Overall - just a beautiful, well written story!

If you enjoy HGTV home renovation shows, second chance sweet love stories, found family, and depth-filled emotions that are so relatable - you'll love this book! This book has renovated its way to the top of my favorites of 2024. It's such a great book and I loved every moment reading. This book does cover processing emotions of miscarriage, stillbirth, and death grief, so trigger warning if that touches a nerve too closely right now. As a birth mom who placed a child for adoption and having experienced a miscarriage myself- the authentic wording of loss and working to heal was very relatable. T.I. Lowe did a wonderful job honoring these experiences, while still incorporating healing and hope for the future.
Lowcountry Lost. This book was phenomenal. I sobbed my eyes out the last 30% or so. A redemptive story on so many levels. If you like home renovation stories, you will love this one. I loved reading Rowan and Avalee's story. I only wish I could experience this book again for the first time.
**it does discuss miscarriage and pregnancy loss**
Lowcountry Lost, by T. I. Lowe is an amazing contemporary Christian fiction story. This is a nicely written story that grabbed my attention right away and held it to the very end. I enjoy reading stories of rebuilding and making something old new. This story fits that description perfectly. As Avalee and her crew make an old abandoned town into a new town filled with fun stores and businesses, she and her ex husband struggle to repair their relationship after experiencing terrible loss.
I enjoyed the many different characters in the story. I enjoyed the humor the brothers brought to the story yet how caring the whole crew were for each other. I also enjoyed how loyal Rowan was to her and how he was there for her when he knew she needed him. I especially enjoyed the wisdom of her older relative. This is a wonderful story of loss, moving forward and second chances, not only for Avalee and Roawan but also for the two young boys they help out and the town they rebuild.
I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this story, this is my honest review.
I really loved this book about moving through past mistakes and heartache to create a meaningful life with people you love and care for. It was very emotional and I was rooting so hard for the main character Avalee to find the peace she was looking for. I absolutely loved the setting (Southern, small town) and would love to visit such a place. Even though it had some heavy serious themes it also had a lot of humor and romance. Highly recommended!
