The Scent of Hours by Barbara O'Neal is an amazing revised edition!
This was a great read. This had all the things you'd expect in a Barbara O'Neal story.
Her stories are always written so beautifully and capture my attention from the very first page.
Thank You NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
The Scent of Hours by Barbara O'Neal is a story about letting go of what you thought made you, a new-found love, dreaming big, and finding yourself. It won't change your life, but it will make you smile and feel all the feels.
Nikki finds her life taking a hard turn when her husband wants a divorce, and she allows her 15-year old daughter to move to California with her ex; making it the first time she is on her own. Nikki slowly faces her new circumstances by reinventing herself; finding what she truly wants for her life. Her new life involves a very handsome romantic man, a couple of supportive neighbors, and a magical shop that inspires Nikki to renew her passion for creating perfume. Nikki deals with her fears, concerns, money, relationships and even her dreams. The Scent of Hours goes much deeper into the reasons behind things than what is initially on the surface.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

Barbara O'Neal writes about strong women who create new lives for themselves. Nikki has to figure out how to start over, when her husband divorces her and her house is gone. In the process she turns her hobby into a career and finds where she really belongs.
O'Neal's books always have beautiful settings along with lovely characters. I really enjoyed this one, as I have enjoyed others of hers in the past.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC.
Barbara O'Neal is an expert at writing stories about women who rise out of the ashes of a life that seemed perfect only to have crash and burn so very unexpectedly. In The Scent of Hours, it is Nikki Bridges, who takes a hobby making it into a career. Along the way she discovers much about herself, finds new supportive friends and a new-found love.
A re-release of the Scent of Hours is just as great the second time around. Read today, you can never go wrong with a Barbara O’Neal book. Each book always speaks to the heart.
In "The Scent of Hours," Nikki Bridges, in her mid-40s, faces upheaval when her husband leaves her and her house explodes. Left with little but a dream of becoming a perfumier, she allows her daughter to move in with her ex and starts anew. Through struggles and newfound opportunities, Nikki rebuilds her life, finding herself, making friends, and pursuing her passion. The novel delves deep into Nikki's journey of self-discovery and resilience, offering a heartwarming tale of love, loss, and new beginnings.
Thank you to the publisher, to Net Galley and to the author for the opportunity for review. My review opinions are my own..
Nikki is a is a woman with a talent for making scents which is her joy. Her dream is to be a career perfumier. She has a nice life and marriage that her husband destroys in one day. With her carefully organized life in chaos after her house burns down she is in the world starting over with her talent and a sense of new found independence. Along the way she weaves her love of scent into her new life and finds her life expands in ways she never imagined. New friendships and romance are enriching her life in new ways. She is following her dreams and finds happieness.
I love the author's emotional heartfelt writing. Her characters are strong women and independent. I love that she writes of women that move on in life and do not dwell on their past. The addition of scent into the fabric of this book was so enjoyable to read. I loved this book as I do all of her writing.
A lovely read about starting over and finding yourself. Nikki's life literally exploded (well, her house did) and now she's making new friends, among other things. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A good read for fans of the genre.
And this is why I read Barbara O’Neal. She touches something in me. The scents, the flavors and the colors. Nikki is at a very major crossroads in her life. Not sure of herself or her role in life.she stops and starts till she finds a way. Her way, herself. I love how this book explains memories in scents. Sweat. Happiness’ and sunshine. This is a wonderful book. Great character development. The Scent Of Hours- Barbara O’Neal- five stars. Thank you NetGalley for and early read of this book. The opinions expressed are my own.
This was a cute one. Not as good as her others I’ve read, but I still enjoyed it. I loved the little journal entries about scents.
Barbara O'Neal once again brings her A-game to this tale of a woman finding herself, and liking what she finds. Originally published as Madame Mirabou's School of Love, this edition has been revised, and very much worth the read for new and experienced readers alike. The story starts with a bang, literally, as divorcee Nikki's house explodes, which mirrors the rest of her life. From there, it is a story that only Barbara O'Neal can tell, and many can appreciate. From Nikki's passion for perfume (I love her perfume diaries) to her determination to catch a stray kitten (she does) to her first steps at finding love again (oh so worth all that came before) this is everything a women's fiction novel should be. The supporting cast, from Nikki's ex and her new love, to the women friends old and new, who see her through, feel true to life.
In short, what I want most right after reading this novel is another Barbara O'Neal tale, because yes, I have caught the scent.
This was a great book. I connected with the characters. I felt engrossed with the plot. I would read another book by this author.
I prefer some of her other books over this one. I just couldn’t get into it or make sense of it.
Thank you NetGalley & Lake Union Publishing for sending this book for review consideration.
Thank you NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing and Barbara O’Neal for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Nikki is dealing with divorce, her family home literally blowing up and her ex husband and daughter moving across the country.
Nikki needs to figure out who she is and who she wants to be moving forward.
To be honest, I wasn’t sure what story this book was telling for most of it. I guess it was a story of Nikki’s self discovery, maybe second chance at love, little bit of found family.
I wish there was more of a conclusion on how Nikki’s life turned out but overall the book was ok.
Special thank you to NetGalley, Barbara O'Neal and Lake Union Publishing for the ARC of this novel.
This is a story of a woman who rediscovers her self after undergoing a significant life transition. The author touches on how this impacts the main characters personal relationships, friendships, employment and living situation. All in all, a great story that will keep you engaged from start to finish.
This is another rerelease from Barabar O'Neal whose talents I have recently discovered. Barbara has an uncanny nack for appealing places. Who wouldn't want to open a store in a previously abandoned place with a beautiful deck view and an adorable apartment upstairs. That is just what the heroine of this book seeks to do. She finds support in the friendship she develops with a young man who of course has the money and time to devote to her. I thoroughly enjoyed this in my latest reads from the talented pen of Barabara O'Neal. If you like romance, great characters, interesting plots, and gorgeous settings read O'Neal books. Thanks to #netGalley#TheScentofHours for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Nikki Bridges, life changed when her husband said he was divorcing her, and she made the decision that he had more to offer their daughter than she did, and her daughter moved away with her father. Her furnace in the basement didn't come on, and she was too afraid to go down to the basement, and the furnace exploded, blowing up her house. With little money, she moved on and got a tiny apartment, waiting for the insurance money. She didn't have a lot of work experience, but she found a job as a waitress, she had lost everything even herself, but once she got the job, and seeing that she could do it, she got some of her confidence back, and slowly she started moving forward.
The story is everything she went through, finding herself, making friends, and creating a life as she learned who she was now and who she was becoming. It kept me reading, it wasn't a smooth path, but she kept on moving forward and to see who she is at the end of the story, is who she is meant to be. I enjoyed reading her story, and it was another wonderful book by Barbara O'Neal.
I received an ARC from Lake Union Publishing.
Nikki Bridges fear led to her house explosion. Lost ,dealing with an insurance company’s glacial pace to settle her claim, she starts over in a complex full of women adrift. Roxanne can’t let go of an abusive, vengeful ex. A young military wife fears for the return of her husband and the nightmares her acts out in his sleep. The apartment complex is the catchall for women of divorce and transition.Slowly they form a family of sorts that support and encourage each other. Nikki’s ex husband has not only moved on but is expanding his family. Nikki has two comforts in her life, her daughter and the making of personal scents. Scents give her a foundation to build on, her daughter is a source of pride and wonder. Giselle her daughter is living with her husband , who is going out of his way to endear her to him throughout the changes in her life. Nikki takes a job in a diner, a job she loved in what she saw as another life. Another life, this is the heart of this story. Nikki comes to a realize that she has not lost a life but been given the chance to build a new one. Happy reading
I love me a story like this! It kept me captivated from the first chapter. I just think a wide variety/range of people will really enjoy this! I recommend.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley for a honest review
For anyone who lost themselves by being a mom and a wife, and forgetting about what makes you happy, this book is for you. I love the way Barbara O'Neal writes, I was drawn into the story right away and I didn't want to leave. I really liked Nikki and I really wanted her to find her happy. This is not really a light and fluffy book ( which I do enjoy) but a bit more serious but it still left me feeling good. I want read more from this author.
I really like Barbara O'Neal but was disappointed that this was just a new name on a novel she wrote almost 20 years ago.
Nikki is newly divorced and is struggling with her new, unwanted life. She meets some new friends along the way, but is a bit self absorbed that she doesn't notice the destruction in her new friend Roxanne's life.
I've been to Manitou Springs, so it was nice to imagine. Other than that it was pretty flat. 3 stars.
