Behind Every Good Man is an incredible read that takes place in 1962. It combines women's fiction and historical fiction.
The book focuses on a Maryland senatorial campaign. And it features amazing Jewish rep.
The main character is 27 year old Beverly Diamond. She is a wife and mother. Honestly I would not have thought that I would have loved a book taking place in this time period and focusing on politics. But somehow I could not put this book down. I loved absolutely everything about this book. It was just amazing.
The characters were so great. I was obsessed with Bev. But I also adored all of the supporting characters, especially Michael Landau (running for senator), Stuart (running his campaign), Nancy (Bev's best friend) and Mildred (Bev's mother).
The book has quick short chapters. And amazing cameos from some favorite characters from Don't Forget To Write. There is also some romance, which was perfection.
Overall, I just loved getting to see Beverly thrive. This was such a good book! I highly recommend it!
absolutely adore Sara Confino Goodman’s books! They are filled with humor, resiliency, and heart. Behind Every Good Man blends historical fiction, women’s fiction, and a little bit of romance into a wonderful five-star read!
What I loved:
✨Washington, D.C. 1962: politics, power of the women’s vote, women fighting for independence from societal norms
✨Our Jewish FMC - Beverly & her parents: Beverly is quick-thinking, resourceful, and fearless in the face of failure. What a terrific role model and inspiration for women today! She firmly takes hold of her own future and does so with the support of her family. Her mother is a hoot; her father’s encouraging. I just love this family!!
✨Small easter eggs from her previous book! I love all the crossover from Don’t Forget to Write. Don't worry if you haven't read it; you’ll still love this book.
Other highlights: short chapters, funny dialogue, great side characters
Thank you for allowing me to read this book as an ARC.
I have loved all of Sara Goodman Confino"s books so far; but this one tops all of them. It's definitely the best one yet.....and I thought that of each one so far. I loved the protagonist and the story line was just perfect. The history was educational and that's one of the reasons I love this author's books, the time period covered is always so interesting and so relatable with the characters in the book.
It is a 5 🌟 read for me.
So much love to Sara Goodman Confino on the release of Behind Every Good Man which comes out today! This was such a wonderful 5-star book!
I loved this 1960s DC area book about Beverly who catches her husband cheating so she decides to get him back at his own game. She grew up in the political area with her dad being a Representative and her husband running the campaign for the incumbent Senator from Maryland so she decides to visit the underdog opponent and offers to help him win. In the way that Sara does best, we see Beverly manage her mom and children, winning this divorce and trying to win this Senatorial race.
I love the charm and wit in Beverly. She's a force to be reckoned with and she had me laughing so many times. I loved the 1960s suburban Maryland setting and seeing what women were up against and how Beverly (and her mom) both knew that they were part of the reason for the success of their husbands. I loved her mom and dad too!
Full of great characters and I love that we got cameos of Marilyn and hearing about being sent to Great Aunt Ada's for the summer which was fun because I loved Don't Forget to Write. I can't wait for more to read Sara's book and a huge thanks to Lake Union Press for an advanced copy.
This book was such a fantastic great read for me. Bev goes through something terrible. She can just choose to crumble and be miserable…. She is such a strong FMC that I was just in awww of her. I had all the feels in her story. Especially at the end! I did shed a tear or two, just have beautiful the story was. Loved, how, this Author written this story!
When Beverly Diamond catches her husband cheating, she’s determined to get revenge. As her future ex focuses on running a senatorial campaign, she harnesses her political skills to bolster his opponent, Michael Landau who’s shaping up to be the perfect candidate.
Beverly was such a fiery force! Her determination to get revenge was admirable 😂 She wasn't afraid to use what she had on hand to get ahead even when grumpy Stuart, Michael's campaign manager, wasn't too happy she was around.
The sparring going on between her and Stuart was comedy gold 😂 If I hadn't known Michael was the potential love interest I'd have gone for Stuart since they had the enemies thing down pat 🤭
I loved how Michael trusted her to steer the campaign in the right direction. The chemistry brewing between them was amazing and I could feel the frustration and pining.
I'm not a fan of politics but this book had me turning the pages just to see what happened next. It was interesting to see how US politics was back in the 1960s. It was also exciting to see how they handled curveballs to come out on top.
I also loved Bev's relationship with her father. He didn't dismiss her as a woman but actually encouraged her in her path. You also couldn't ask for a more feisty best friend than Nancy. She was a treat! I loved how it all worked out in the end 😄
This is definitely a favourite of the year. Thank you to Netgalley and Publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I would love to be best friends with Bev. She was as funny as she was inspiring, and I was so glad to be a part of her world for this book. Big love to Millie and Nancy as well.
I’m so grateful to have been born into a generation that (mostly) views women as equals. But regardless of time, there has ALWAYS been an even better woman behind every good man.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you GetRedPR for the opportunity to read and review this wonderful book. Thank you Lake Union Pub and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I want to be Beverly when I grow up. As frustrating as I found the situation, I loved how she overcame and grew as a woman, mother, and employee.
📚: Behind Every Good Man by Sara Goodman Confino
⭐️: 5/5
The gist: It’s the 1960s. Beverly Diamond, 27 years old, mother of two, housewife to Larry. And she’s having a really bad day when she walks into his office to catch him with his secretary. To make her own way, she finds herself in the middle of a senate race — running the campaign for the candidate her soon-to-be-ex husband works for.
The good: I loved, loved, LOVED this book. It’s funny. It’s witty. It’s feminist. It’s empowering. It tells the story of motherhood, being a mom, and being a daughter — and standing up for oneself in an era where a woman’s voice was especially suppressed. Literally, stop reading this review and go and pick up this book.
A huge thank you to Lake Union Publishing via @netgalley for the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. Behind Every Good Man is out now!
Beverly is mad, and rightfully so, after catching her husband cheating with his secretary. She is not planning on forgiving him, and needs to come up with a way to support herself and her two kids - in 1962.
Beverly comes from a family of politicians, so she decides to put her knowledge to use by working for an underdog senatorial candidate. It will be an uphill climb for her, especially since the candidate’s campaign manager isn’t pleased by Beverly’s presence. But the pot is sweetened because her husband, Larry, runs the campaign for the incumbent candidate. If Beverly can help her candidate win, it will be an even sweeter victory.
I loved Beverly’s character. She was smart, spunky, and pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable for women in the 1960s. It was so satisfying to see her be successful with the different strategies - mainly focusing on women and women’s issues - especially when many around her doubted that her approach would work.
This book has heart, humor, and a touch of romance - all things I love in my books, and Sara Confino executes them perfectly. She is an auto-buy author for me, and I can’t wait to see what she writes next.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with this book in exchange for my honest review.
4.5/5
What a fun read…and timely. Bev is what we think of as a typical housewife in the early 60s, focusing solely on her husband, children and little on herself. Until the rug is pulled out from under her and she finds out just how strong she is.
Instagram has been talking about this book. I find sometimes that when everyone is loving on a book, my expectations are set very high and I can sometimes be disappointed. But, I’m happy to say this book lived up to the hype. I loved Beverly! She dug deep, didn’t wallow and found her passion. All the characters are so enjoyable and relatable. The personal growth in Beverly, and her parents, was fun to see. Everyone needs a best friend like Nancy! I enjoy historical fiction and was so happy to read about a more recent timeframe, especially not being as dark as some. As someone growing up in the late 60s, this brought back so many memories, reliving many family discussions. The 60s are accurately portrayed. The writing is top notch, I was sucked in from page one until the satisfying ending. I found myself smiling often. As this book showed, one person can make a difference, and it showed the power of a vote.
This was my first read by this author, look forward to reading her previous books and can’t wait to see what she has planned next.
Thanks to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC. This is my honest opinion.
It’s 1962 and Beverly Diamond is no stranger to politics, between her retired congressman father and a husband who’s the campaign manager to an incumbent Maryland senator. When she catches her husband in a compromising position (ahem) with his secretary, Beverly isn’t going to take things lying down (like the secretary did, haha). Newly separated and needing to find a job to support her two young children, Beverly pitches her campaign services to Michael Landau, who just happens to be running against Larry’s boss. May the best man – or woman – win! After all, you know what they say: “Behind every good man is an even better woman.”
I adored Beverly and her spunky determination, witty intelligence, and budding feminism! She reminded me a little of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (who I love). I loved the way she didn’t take crap from Larry or anyone else, and how she stood up for herself and other women. There are also so many great supporting characters, and I loved how their character arcs were positively impacted by Beverly. The light touch of romance is just right and perfectly complements Beverly’s newfound independence. The plot is fantastic, and I’m amazed at how Sara Goodman Confino managed to make 1960s politics so funny, heartfelt, and meaningful. Highly recommended!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for providing me an advance copy of this book.
What a fabulous, brilliantly written and inspiring read!
Don't let the political theme put you off, if that's not your bag; it's not my thing, but this book is about the people behind the campaigns, far more than the politics and really highlights the struggles of women in the 1960s.
When Beverly catches her husband being a total cliché and getting jiggy with his secretary, she realises that the best way to get revenge on him is to beat him at his own game. Up until now, she has run his work life for him, as well as their home and raising their children, so by transferring her skills to his political opponent, who is very much the underdog, Beverly knows she will hit Larry where it hurts.
A total feel-good read, with plenty of humour, despite the serious subject matter of adultery. The character development was excellent, I even loved Millie, Beverly's mother by the end, despite despising her at the start. The way Beverly storms in and almost bullies Michael to allow her to run his ailing campaign was hilariously brilliant too!
5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Sara Goodman Confino and Lake Union for an ARC in return for an honest review.
🪷Don't Forget to Write by Sara Confino was among my top reada of last year. I was so excited to get my hands on this book. I completely devoured it in a few sittings and went back to read it again slower this time.
🪷Beverly was the perfect mother and wife until her husband Larry is caught in a compromising position, and then all bets are off. She kicks him out and decides she will be her own advocate from now on. This includes knocking on Michael Landaus door. She wants revenge, so she's going to fight to get Michael elected, so Larry's candidate loses. Growing up with a dad in politics, Beverly knows her stuff. Plus, Michael is the better candidate, advocating for change in many areas.
🪷This story has heart and humor and doesn't shy away from women's rights in a male dominated world. I loved how Sara weaved some of her past characters into this story in small ways. Such an incredible storyteller, Sara's books, grab you and discuss real issues while bringing in humor to lighten everything up. The side characters in this story were also fantastic, especially Beverly's mother. She was so strong-willed, and it was obvious where Beverly's gumption came from. I'd highly recommend this one, and it's out today!
This book was just so good. I don't know if I have the right words yet.
It kind of reminded me of if Marvelous Mrs. Maisel -with her boldness, quick thinking, sharp wit and ahead of the times nature- took on Maryland politics and the social club scene instead of comedy, with Mad Men gravitas? But that doesn't do this book justice.
If it's two things Bev Diamond knows, it's politics and how to make her household run flawlessly. Growing up in a political family, it does not phase her that her husband is also politics but it does phase her when she walks in on him and his secretary (as she comically points out) "taking dictation". After kicking him out, but listening to everyone else tell her to take him back, she's reading the news when she sees the congressman hopeful and can see how he needs a few tweaks to turn his grassroots attempt at overthrowing his opponent and be the best man for the job, And how she is just a person to get him there.
This book takes a look at 1960s, politics, gender roles and abilities of the time, those stepping out of the rolls, some of the racial movement, anti-Semitism, The movement of politics regarding how TV and media changed the way politicians campaigned and how they were presented to the public. It was supremely interesting how fully these characters seem to be part of the accurate representation of their time period.

Sara Goodman Confino's latest release is just wonderful. Strong Jewish women in 1960s politics, betrayal, a bit of romance and the most delightful cameos from her last book, which was also a favourite!
Behind Every Good Man starts with a 60s wife and mother catching her husband with his secretary. While that sounds a bit cliche, what she does next is anything but. When he threatens to take away her house she seeks a job in the area she knows best, politics. It was empowering to read about how she navigates all the social and legal limitations imposed on women in 1962 and I adored almost every single character by the end of the story. Even the villains in the story feel like real, flawed, relatable people. I am kind of sad now because I've read all Sara's books, but can't wait to see what she will write next.
I also listened to part of the book on audible since it is available with Kindle Unlimited and the narration by Helen Laser, who also narrated Don't Forget to Write, was fantastic! And the perfect ending to this story is the author's note which talks about the real life inspirations behind the story.
Beverly Diamond's life changes when she finds her husband Larry cheating behind her back. Beverly has two children, no degree and she knows that her husband is going to divorce her soon. So in order to support herself, she enrolls to support Michael Landau, a young and upcoming politician who is running against her ex-husband. Beverly with her experience in politics starts using her knowledge to help Michael with his own campaign that will hopefully beat her ex- husband's campaign.
I love Sara Goodman Confino's book and I was excited to get my hands on this book. If you are into women empowerment, 1960's setting, and the era when women hardly got into politics, then this book is one for you. Beverly is a very likable character and I like her overall courage and enthusiasm and her hardworking attitude to help Michael win the election. Not only that, I also like her relationship with her own mother and I like how the whole novel is based on how behind every good man there is a woman who will support you no matter what.
Overall this book worth 4.5 stars!
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
Another fabulous story from this author!
In 1962, Beverley Diamond is expected to be the perfect wife and mother, obeying her husband - but all that goes out the window when she catches him cheating with his secretary. Beverley is not going to stand for it and, what's more, she's going to hit him where it hurts. Larry runs the political campaign for Maryland's senator agains the up-and-coming - and younger - opponent,Michael Landau. Beverley was raised in the world of politicals and has the know-how to succeed in that world so what does she do? She joins Landau's side, of course ...
This is such a fun read. To say that Larry is blind-sided is a bit of an understatement; he seems to have forgotten that not only is his wife beautiful but she is capable too - and she knows how to hit him where it hurts. Throw in her parents and their ongoing turmoil as well as the kids and this is a packed novel. I'm full of admiration for Beverley; she was a woman way ahead of her time and without these trailblazers, where would we be now? Another triumph for Sara Goodman Confino, who never fails to write a cracking tale! Five sparkling stars and my heartiest recommendation.
My thanks to the publisher for my copy via NetGalley; this is - as always - my honest, original and unbiased review.
This book is set in the 60s when women was expected to be a good housewife and take care of the kids. Beverly was raised in politics with her father and married to a campaign manager. She walks into her husband's office and catches him cheating. Rather than letting it slide, she decides to divorce him.
This story really portrayed the frustration of going through a divorce when women didn't have many rights and divorces were frowned upon.
Once she takes up a job as a campaign manager of her husband's rival, things really gets interesting. The casts of characters all played such an important role in the story and I love the humor brought into the story.
What I found was that this story is so relevant in our current political situation where women's rights are being taken away.
Thank you to the publisher for a copy of this book.
I will read anything @saraconfino writes forever and ever, Amen! Her books are like old friends- so comfortable and fun!
Behind Every Good Man follows a young housewife who catches her campaign manager husband with his secretary. How is a women supposed to support herself in 1962 with two kids? Beverly decides to beat her ex at his own game- becoming campaign manager for her ex’s opponent.
Things I loved about this book:
- Beverly is such a likable character.
- Fun 60’s vibes.
- Wonderful writing.
- Jewish representation.
- Cross-over characters from Sara’s other books show up.
- Lots of humor that didn’t feel silly.
Five stars! I highly recommend Behind Every Man and Sara’s other books! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Behind Every Man. It is out tomorrow- August 6, 2024.
