I struggled my way through what I read of this. That opening scene with Wendy's parent's fighting felt like it lasted forever. Something about the writing just felt off. It didn't flow and I don't know if this had an editor or if it's just a style of voice I don't ge with but to me it was reminiscent of how kids/teens write. I gave up with it.
I'm a big Peter Pan fan and I automatically love anything that has to do with this world and these characters. This was an interesting read, but it didn't Wow me as a retelling. I would've liked to see greater depth into the Neverland World and really geet the chance to explore these characters on a much deeper level. And for the "dark romance" aspect, I feel like it didn't mesh well with the initial approach this book took to these characters. There's so many ways the Peter Pan lore can be explored and changed, but adding a dark romance aspect to a story that is essentially the original with young characters, has a way of being very offputting to some.
Peter Pan retelling. This now is now divided into different books of escapism. Peter and Wendy’s story is mostly told in this book. Age gap. Slow burn. Gets you set up for the rest of the story.
I really enjoyed this book, the plot was well paced and the characters were well written. I look forward to reading more from this author.
I absolutely love a good Peter Pan retelling. As far as retellings go, nothing calls me to read faster than Pan does!
However, this book fell short for me. It wasn't horrible, but there was a lot of confusion and there seemed to be so much going on for as short a book as this was.
I was confused about their ages. If they indeed were 14, then I think there was a lot of inappropriate behavior. It seemed to flow in the area of dark romance at times, even with Pan referring to Wendy as "good girl". There was sensual making out, unbuttoning of nightclothes...it just felt wrong to me.
At the moment, I am also reading Lost Boy and I am really enjoying this one. Which brings me to say l have tried to understand the order in which to read these books, and the splitting of one into two, but l'm still a bit confused on how they should go?
Thank you to NetGalley for the ebook of Hooking Peter in exchange for my honest review!
A retelling of Peter Pan. This book seemed to follow the Disney story of Peter Pan for the most part, except Peter is darker than the happy, I never wanna grow up boy Disney brought us.
There were times I felt lost with the time frame of events happening. For example; Peter goes to Neverland and the next chapter he goes to visit Wendy, when once you start reading the chapter you realize that it doesn't occur right away and there is a bit of a time frame between the 2 events.
Theres a bit of spice, but it mild. I'd call it more like a slow burn or just a tease. The book ends on a cliffhanger, and you need to continue the series to find out what happens.
Thank you to Netgalley, Brittany Montgomery, and the publishers for this free ebook. This review is 10o% my own and honest opinion.
I thought this was very good and I will have to add this to the shop shelves. Thank you for the chance for us to review.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book.
I tried to like this book but just couldn’t. I felt like there wasn’t enough character development to help flesh out the story/plot. I also couldn’t quite figure out how old Peter was, which made me dislike the romance aspect (was he just 13 throughout the book??).
"Hooking Peter" by Brittany Montgomery is a thrilling and imaginative continuation of the Peter Pan saga, focusing on the complex and often tumultuous relationship between Peter Pan and Captain Hook. This novel dives deep into the psyche of both characters, exploring their motivations, fears, and the intricate dance of rivalry and respect that defines their interactions.
Montgomery’s storytelling is both vivid and compelling, drawing readers into the magical yet perilous world of Neverland. The character development is exceptional, with Peter Pan portrayed as more than just the carefree boy who never grows up, and Hook as a multifaceted antagonist with his own set of principles and vulnerabilities.
The plot is fast-paced and filled with unexpected twists, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. The dynamic between Peter and Hook is electric, filled with tension, wit, and a surprising depth of emotion. Montgomery’s ability to balance action with introspective moments makes this book a standout in the realm of fantasy retellings.
Overall, "Hooking Peter" is a captivating and richly layered novel that will delight fans of the original tale and newcomers alike. It’s a story about the thin line between heroism and villainy, and the enduring power of belief and imagination. I’d give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars for its engaging narrative and complex character portrayals.
Thank you for this Arc. I love a Peter Pan retelling and this was good. I did like the authors writing style but I have read better pan books. 3.5/5 stars
I didn’t like this book. Unfortunately it just didn’t do it for me. Pacing was off. I’m not into sexualizing teens. Just not for me.
I am not sure what to say about this book. It was confusing in the first half because the time jumps were not labeled, so it took me a few chapters to figure out the characters' ages (I'm still uncertain if Peter was still in his 13-year-old body). If he was, that sort of gives me the ick.
At 18 years old, I would think Wendy would have been a little less scared of everything and not so much of a damsel in distress, crying for Peter at every little thing. Peter is a villain and not even morally grey. He only thinks of himself and blames everyone else for his problems.
I received this as an ARC from Netgalley.
Thank you Netgalley and author Brittany Montgomery for the e-copy of this book in exchange for a review.

The lost boys turn on him. The mermaids and fae work against him. And an evil, dangerous shadow falls on Neverland.Jas Hook."
I enjoy reading it.
I think maybe this isn't a thing anymore? It was just announced that the author will be returning to her original pen name of Evelyn Montgomery, and she's republished the original trigger-free version of Losing Neverland as Lost Boy, but did not mention this one. However, it is nowhere to be seen anywhere you can buy books, but I'm assuming she's starting fresh with Lost Boy and the original dark version of Losing Neverland.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an Arc to review of this book. This does not alter my opinions/ratings of the book.
I requested this book through Netgalley based on being a Peter Pan retelling. I've always adored the Darling last name. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, and wasn't sure if this would be a YA or Adult book.
I enjoyed the unique origin story for Peter and Wendy, and appreciated that some details stayed true to the original, like Tink's jealousy. I would almost categorize this as a dark romance, due to some of the more violent twists, and romance scenes in the story line. All in all I enjoyed this story, and the cliff hanger ending. I would rate it a 3.5 only because the dialog felt a bit stiff at times. Still worth a read for fellow Pan lovers!

Kind of annoyed. I downloaded this one and Losing Neverland (dark retelling ) at the same time from what I thought were two different authors.
WRONG!
I read Losing Neverland, enjoyed it, then cleansed my palette on a cutesy rom-com before going into another Peter Pan retelling… and I noticed similarities as I was reading. Not the first couple of chapters, but as it got to Wendy’s 13th birthday I was sat there going “this sounds familiar…is it just because these things happened in the original Peter Pan and they’re both just adding them in….?”
Nope. I needed to come on here and check and YUP same person wrote both books, just different names.
So I am DNF’ing currently. I may get back to it at some point. Maybe.
This is an updated version of Hooking Peter so technically this is my second time reading it. For some reason I can’t tell what changed between that book and this book but I still enjoyed it.
I just LOVE fairytale retellings and have read a few Peter Pan reimaginings - and this is right up there with some of the most fun ones!
Retelling of Peter Pan. Peter doesn't want to grow up, so goes to Neverland with Tinkerbell.
I felt like the story was well written, and I enjoyed seeing more of a backstory for Peter Pan, but there were parts that were very meh to me. Like, when he goes back to get Wendy. Wendy wasn't my favorite, she was a little annoying to me. The way she acted was more childish than her actual age and was kind of unbelieving, but other than that, I enjoyed it overall. I received an advanced review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily and honestly.
