An easily commendable junior read about Betty White – not that "The Golden Girls" would go down that well with the current generation of elementary school kids, but her story of going against the grain and never seriously retiring, and her habit of adopting animals and funding responses to wildlife disasters, animal shelters etc, makes for a fine little drama. Who would think to combine being a media pioneer, creating Emmy-winning sitcoms, whilst being a campaigner for gay marriage and inclusion on TV, all the while having an eye to helping animals out too?
It's a slightly unexpected story, not being the kind of character that would immediately inspire the routine kid, but her life certainly seems full of the unexpected on this evidence, and worthy of record in such a fashion. The pages are quite often broken up with an illustration or a question to the reader as an aside, and the large font adds to the clarity of the telling (and the revision offered by timelines) to get all the information across well. A healthy four stars.
Thank you Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. These opinions are completely my own.
A wonderful book that not only highlights Betty White's on screen career, but also her love for all animals.
Betty is a survivor that worked hard to get what she wanted in a world she wasn't always welcomed in. I also believe the Jump in the Think Tank questions were well thought out and great conversation starters

Who doesn't love Betty White? Well, apart from Bea Arthur lol.
Such an amazing woman who paved the way for women in so many things while she helped animals and made us laugh.
She reminds me of the likes of my other idols Lucille Ball and Dolly Parton.

I thought that this was an excellent book.
It is a great introduction to Betty, some of her achievements (and she had many!) and her beliefs.
I thought that the book was well written, the chapters were great and I liked the focus points. The book was well laid out and the illustrations in the book were great and brought her story to life.
It is 5 stars from me for this one, very highly recommended and a great springboard to learn more about Betty White
3.8 "grades three to five fun" stars !!
Thank you to Callisto Publishing, the author and illustrator, and Netgalley for an ecopy. This was released Oct 1, 2024. I am providing an honest review.
So much to enjoy in this life story of the adorable and kindly Betty White. This is suitable for ages 8 to 11. This fifty-something year old gent learned a great deal about Betty through this book too. At first I wondered would children be interested in Betty White and reading this I can see how they could become inspired by this very sweet and funny lady.
There is a sequential telling of her life in childhood, creative endeavors, animal and social justice and just plain good ol' kindness. Probing questions and a quiz are also provided. The weak link for me were the illustrations...adequate but not too appealing to this reader. I enjoyed the photographs though.
Thank you for all the laughs over the years Betty and I always wanted to party with you in St. Olaf !
Love ya to bits my Betty boo. Rest in peace after your long life of 100 years.
Thank you so much to Callisto Publishing / Callisto Kids and Netgalley for the Ebook to read and review.
Betty White literally inspired everyone, this beautifully written biography shares exactly why and how she inspired everyone. She was such an incredible human being and made the world a much better place with all the wonderful things she did.
I knew a fair amount about her before reading this but I learnt so much more, I didn’t know exactly how much advocating she did for animals or how she continuously donated money for causes the needed her help to ensure the safety of animals. I’m so happy her love of animals never stopped and that she helped save so many over her life span.
She was a timeless woman, she paved so many paths for so many other woman on tv, she had so much insane talent within her and she shared it with everyone. She was such an inspiring lady who made you laugh instantly at the things she’d say and do in her roles, she helped ensure the world knew your age or gender or skin tone didn’t matter, you had a place on TV and film regardless.
This book was written so incredibly well, you get to learn so much more about her with lots of details, you grow to love this woman even more after reading. I also loved the illustrations of her throughout the book I felt they captured her so perfectly. This is a wonderful book for young readers to see how she paved ways for so many, cared for so many and how she left her legacy behind her. She’s incredibly inspiring in every aspect of her incredibly long and full life.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
I have always been a Betty White fan; I admired her for her wonderful comedic acting ability (I still love Golden Girl reruns) and her lifelong support and dedication to animals.
I requested this book the 1st day I noticed it and immediately read it as soon my request was granted. Here's my review.
The Story of Betty White: An Inspiring Biography for Young Readers by Tam Warner Minton is a delightful and educational read that captures the essence of Betty White’s remarkable life in a way that is accessible and engaging for young readers. Aimed at children aged 6 to 9, this biography not only highlights Betty White’s achievements but also emphasizes the values of kindness, curiosity, and perseverance. I enjoyed this quick read as an adult; I am so happy Betty White is still recognized for being the awesome trailblazer that she was.
The book is structured in short, easy-to-read chapters, making it perfect for independent reading or for parents to read aloud with their children. Minton does an excellent job of breaking down complex aspects of Betty White’s life into simple, digestible pieces. From her early days in California, her love for animals, to her groundbreaking work in television, each chapter is filled with interesting facts and anecdotes that keep young readers hooked.
One of the standout features of this biography is its focus on critical thinking. The book includes discussion questions and definitions of new words, encouraging children to think deeply about what they have read and to expand their vocabulary. There is a dictionary at the end that children can refer to for any words they find difficult; a perfect way for the young to develop their comprehension and love of words. This interactive element makes the reading experience more engaging but also educational.
The illustrations by Pearl Law add a beautiful and vibrant touch to the narrative, bringing Betty White’s story to life with colorful and expressive artwork. These visuals complement the text, making the book even more appealing to young readers.
The Story of Betty White is more than just a biography, it is also an inspiring tale that teaches children about the importance of following their dreams, being kind, and making a difference in the world. I am thrilled that the iconic Betty White is still being recognized for her contributions; this allows her kind heart and her lessons to be a beloved legacy that keeps on giving, much as the kind Betty White did while she was in our realm.
