I really enjoyed this story of found family, fashion, and city life! I adored all the queer rep in this book! The illustrations were absolutely gorgeous! I didn't expect there to be a mystery element with Bianca’s mom which leads to a cliffhanger at the end. Super excited to find out more in book 2.
I enjoyed especially Blanca but honestly I had a really hard time telling the other characters apart. There were just so many side characters in New York that were established so fast after each other that a lot of the time I had no idea who Blanca was hangin out with. I felt that the drawing style didn't help. The big eyes made everyone look very similar although they were technically very diverse in ethnicity, gender and size.
I thought the most interesting plot thread was the one of Blanca's mother. She is such a cool villain, I really really liked her. Unfortunately there was very little of her in this first comic.
Had a blast reading this. I loved the vibrancy of the illustrations & the huge variety of characters. My only gripe is that I wish it was longer!

Yikes it has been a while since I read this but I loved it. The cute art style and coming of age storyline and the spectrum of LGBTQI+A representation. I remember the main character's mother being so intensely judgmental and image consciousness and I was not surprised by "the twist". Kind of saw that one coming. But I highly recommend this graphic novel.

This was such a delightful read! The illustrations were beautifully done, with vibrant colors that brought the story to life. The found-family element was heartwarming, and the character dynamics were adorable, especially considering how short this volume was. If you’re a fan of the found family trope, this is definitely a must-read! At times, the story moved quickly between scenes, which made a few moments harder to follow, but the charm and sitcom-like vibe made it such an enjoyable experience. I could see this series going on for many installments, and I'd be thrilled to follow along!
I had a hard time putting this graphic novel down. Right away we see a teen make a big decision, to move far away from home to pursue their dream job. Things start off a bit rough, but get better once she makes a new friend. She gets to stay with them and their roommates and it looks like a great place to help make her dreams a reality. They get to attend some great parties and learn more about the people they live with. Yet as this graphic novel comes to a close it seems this story is far from over.
What a fun story!
Not just fun, but heartwarming and totally hilarious graphic novel that not only take starlight the story with words but with amazing g illustrations as well.
Bianca is such a character - charming, sweet, who is learning to take matters into her own hands and follow her passion even if it involved running away from home and her controlling mother.
But sometimes to find your way to need to stray off the road a bit. And that’s exactly what Bianca did.
I give this read 3.75 stars
Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for this coming of age following your dreams novel in exchange for an honest review.
This was a cute story about transitioning into adulthood and deciding to take your life out of your parents hands and into your own. It deals with generational trauma and our main characters initiative to achieve her dreams despite having a controlling super boss corporate baddie mom. This comic is short so we don't see too much of that dynamic in detail except for the beginning but those few pages does a great job conveying the point and thus our protagonist's motivations.
Once in New York she befriends and a kind man who lives in a house full of drag queens and other gay men who are very warm and accepting of her. I really don't feel like we get enough time with these guys honestly but my favorite was definitely Thai Dishes. She was great! XD It would've been nice to have a bit more time to see her developing actual friendships with these guys, but this first volume is pretty short so I'll give it some leeway and hope that gets tackled more in further volumes so it feels more genuine. However, it was cute and I liked their fun interactions and seeing where it goes.
The concept is definitely good for telling this story of self discovery, freedom, and development, but it's very rose colored. Realistically meeting into a soul kind enough to let you move into their brownstone upon first meeting isn't realistic at all in today's society but I enjoyed reading that because it makes me hope for a future where that's more realistic. Or the idea of at least meeting people kind and accepting enough for something like that.
Overall, this was a cute and fast read with a concept that is pretty relatable to most people, especially in terms of finding your own way and beginning your adult life the way you want rather than what your parents want. Those crushing expectations are a lot and as someone who just graduated college I'm definitely feeling that pressure so that aspect hit for me.

So, when I saw a story about an heir running away to Nes-York, I was like "This is for me". Especially since the main character ends up living with a full gay household, one of them being a drag queen. Slay girl! And this was a good story honestly, I liked it. The characters are just great, and the story is pretty interesting. Plus, the art style and the whole queer community of New York was good.
Sometimes, the pacing was a bit too slow, but still a good book. But it could have been great. One thing that kept bothering me was that the main character is straight. Why do we have a story full of gay/bi guy/non-binary people, but Blanca (the protagonist) is not even bi? I don't know, this doesn't feel right. It just would have been great to have the whole queer community in the book.
Also, the (straight) romance was pretty boring.
Thanks NetGalley and Oni Press for this arc!
4/5 stars!
I enjoyed this graphic novel about Blanca, a recent high school grad, escaping her controlling mother and finding her own way in New York City. This was a nice read, full of really nice characters that took her in and are helping Blanca be all she has wanted to be. Some things definitely feel too easy and too good to be true, but some (so far) happily ever afters are good 💜 Ido feel a bit confused at times with just how many secondary characters there are, and some look really similar but their hair colour is different. I feel like there either could've been less people or just a better difference between some and that would help me know who's who lol. That ending though!? I definitely can't wait until the next volume!!
A touching story about a girl growing up and finding her own way. There's a lot of topics that are very popular at the moment. I think it was a nice read and gave it 4 stars. I'm very curious about how Blanca's life will continue. The artwork was pretty and well done too.
A very enjoyable first volume for a new series. At times I was confused by the number of characters, and I wish I had a bit more understanding as to why Blanca’s mother cares this much about dragging her home, but neither of these things distracted me enough from the light-hearted adventure of a new adult striking out on their own.
I loved this! A story that revels in the magic of self-discovery and self-invention. Blanca runs away from her mother's expectations and finds a new family in the form of her glamourous and diverse queer housemates, who encourage her to pursue her dream of working in fashion. I'm very much looking forward to volume 2 and will continue to recommend this far and wide!
This is a colourful and heartwarming story about a young girl called Blanca who runs away from her domineering mother to New York where she stumbles across a home of friendly and diverse people.
She then becomes adopted by this family, some of whom are strays and runaways themselves, and as she finds her way around the city she find friends, fashion and family.
Meanwhile of course her mother is determined to find her and hires a private detective to find her while Blanca is busy finding herself, and cooking, sewing and making friends with her new found family. She has found a new life but she still needs to resolve the old one.
It is a gorgeous comic full of cooking, laughter and real life and I am looking forward to volume two!

I really liked the art in this graphic novel, it was probably my favourite part of it. Nothing much really happened in this volume. I felt like this story consisted of 90% life lessons and advice and 10% plot. I think I’ll read volume 2 once that comes out as I liked the twist at the end and find it interesting, I look forward to see how the story continues.
The artwork alone is out of this world. I found myself in complete awe as the story progressed. It is something about being able to see how the author visualized the story that made the experience that much better.
Absolutely gorgeous book. The artwork is so well done and the story was just as well done. Loved it and the characters.
One of the best queer graphic novels out there! Stunning art, an incredibly moving storyline, and the most fantastic queer representation. Can't wait for the next one!

When Blanca runs away to New York, away from her mother, she has no idea where to go. Luckily, she meets the kind stranger Emile who takes her into his bustling home. Her new roommates inspire her to start chasing her dreams!
This was such a comfort read for me! It was light, sweet and fun. The characters were very likeable and each one had a different story. They really took their time to introduce each character throughout the comic. It didn't feel overwhelming, even though this book has quite a lot of characters to introduce. When I came back to the story, after stepping away it for a little (due to a busy schedule), it did take me a moment to remember who was who. But I feel like, once there are more volumes out, I'll get to know everyone more and I won't have that issue anymore.
This story also felt like a love letter to drag, highlighting the beauty of this artform multiple times!
If you love light-hearted, queer comics, this is the one for you!
"Eat Your Heart Out Vol. 1" is out now! Go get it!
I really liked the colours for the story specifically. It bought the characters really out and made everything so vibrant (which was nice given that it was all about the NEW and EXCITING Blanca experiences)
The story itself get's influenced by a looming and deeply complicated mother-daughter relationship that bought Blanca to New York, away from her mother and right forward to archiving her dreams of becoming a fashion designer!
We get introducted to so many different characters with their own passions, dreams, and romantic adventures. Ever one of them unique in their own way. I really liked them all and their bonding moment with Blanca. It made the friendships feel a bit more organic instead of throwing everyone just into one pit and calling it 'found family'.
I hope we get more focused moments with everyone in the next volumes ♡ cus i gotta say Volume 1 really packed in a LOT. So much (smaller) stuff happend, which i get is to introduce us to everyone, but it did take a bit away from bringing the main plot forward BUT my god i got to say, the end of volume 1 really hooked me in (kinda feel stupid for not getting that faster 😂)
A big queer tale of chosen family, hopes and dreams, and a lot of romance ♡
