This book was absolutely heart warming! I love coming of age books but a graphic novel is even better!

This book follows the story of a young girl named Blanca. Her mom has her life planned out for her but it’s not quite how Blanca imagined her life going. So she runs away to New York.

I love that this book has all sorts of representation (LGBTQ+). And oh my do I love drag queens, so this was a treat for me!

I will say that there’s a bit of a twist you don’t see coming and I need you to be prepared because I wasn’t!

Thank you NetGalley for granting me access to this E-arc in exchange for an honest review.

Unfortunately, this graphic novel was not for me. I really loved the art, but everything happened all at once and I coundn't keep track of so many characters introduced. Futhermore, I really hated Blancas mom, Jesus Christ! Even with not getting the conection with the whole history, I loved so much the art style.

Blanca ran away from her strict mother to New York City to pursue her dream. There, she befriended Emile, who took her to his apartment and introduced her to his roommates.

Blanca is a friendly and cool character. She listens to and encourages all the characters. It has characters with different LGBTQIA+ identities. All the characters are lovable. What I really enjoyed about this book was found family trope.

I enjoy the fairytale elements in the story, such as the Little Mermaid and Snow White. I admire the colourful and beautiful artwork.

I enjoyed reading this book. I am looking forward to reading Volume 2.

I absolutely enjoyed this book! I read it in under 3 hours and thought it was so cute. Blanca, newly graduated from high school, moves to New York City to live the life that she has always dreamed of, not the one that her mother wants for her. When things get rough, and realizing she has no where to go, she meets Emile. With the help up him and his housemates, Blanca may just make it in the city as a fashion designer yet.

A nice story about finding your passion and your place in the world.

I loved how much queer rep there was in this book and I also really liked the art style. The plot itself was fun and fast paced. The mother got a bit too overly villainized in my opinion though, she almost seemed like a caricature.

I'm looking forward to the sequel!

Thank you Oni Press and NetGalley for providing me with this arc in exchange for my honest review.

Blanca is under a lot of pressure at home. Her mom is honestly kinda scary (she reminded me of Cruella De Vil) and is pushing Blanca to do her best and go to business school. But Blanca is a creative soul and loves sewing and sketching! So when she turns 18 she decides to run away to New York, the epicenter of fashion but when she arrives there, it isn’t what she thought it would be until she meets Emile!

Emile immediately treats her like they’ve known eachother forever, which (among other things that follow) didn’t feel very believable but I just went with it. We get to meet his many colorful roommates and they’re okay with her staying, to live with them! Blanca loves it there and saves the day when they take her to a drag show and she fixes one of the performers’ dresses. I felt like I really got to know the different roommates and their passions and struggles. And Blanca even finds romance!!! But can she trust him? And will her mom ever just let her be who she wants to be and stop trying to control her?

The art was incredibly atmospheric! And it was almost like I could feel the amazing vibe. What I didn’t like were the eyes of the characters and how strangely short they looked.

We follow a girl who runs away from home because her mom is controlling and she wants to follow her dream. She takes off to New York and meets some nice guys who become her friends and roommates. She shares her talents with them and even finds a nice boy she's into. Though things might not be what they seem with the boy as the plot thickens.

"Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, poop on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it."

I have so much I want to say and will try not to ramble.

The art is so stunning, its honestly beautiful throughout the book. I found myself going back once I read it to really appreciate it again.

I loved all the characters , the story and the real good feeling towards it. Blanca is just so cute and I couldn't help routing for her. Also my lesbian heart was saying just be queer or bi lol. Give me F/F :) (no spoilers) But there is a certain someone in Blanca life I am like something is going on and my brains all like I DONT TRUST YOU vibes. So waiting for part 2 might destroy my soul a little. So thank you Terry and Matty for keeping me on the edge.

I loved how once I finished Vol 1 its showed the Brownstone development floorplans, rooms , characters and cover.

Thank you Netgalley and the authors for an arc copy

I enjoyed the first Volume of "Eat Your Heart Out" and I'm definitely interested in reading the following Volumes. It's a story about following your dreams, even if it is scary and will change your whole life, about found family and community and freedom of expression.

Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for the e-arc!

Eat Your Heart Out reads like a modern fairytale with its themes of self-discovery and family. The story follows Blanca who decides to run away from her controlling mom and move to NYC to pursue fashion design. She has no job or place to live but ends up having a chance encounter with Emile. Emile provides her with a home and encouragement. I thought this was endearing despite its serious topics and worth the read. I will definitely check out the next volume to see where the story goes.

Such a fun story to read! I loved the characters and the found family trope. Most of this volume introduces the characters but it ends with a cliffhanger, so I can't wait to read the next volume. I would defiantly recommend this book for young queer people looking for some fun representation.

Oh my god Yes this was so good! This arc spends most time setting up the characters, it's just vol 1, and their connections to eachother but it was so interesting. My little queer hart is happy.

"Eat Your Heart Out" is a coming-of-age graphic novel that follows Blanca on a journey of self-discovery. While plot-wise the book is not really strong, the novel is filled with interesting characters and lots of queerness, which is always much appreciated. What I enjoyed the most was the constant presence of the found family trope and the important message of doing what you truly love in life. The pacing was a bit off at times and I found that some situations were not very realistic, but overall the book delivers and I'm interested in giving future volumes a try!

Eat Your Heart Out Vol. 1 by Terry Blas and Matty Newton is an absolute gem for those craving a heartwarming journey of self-discovery and belonging. Blanca's pursuit of her passion amidst the bustling streets of New York City is both inspiring and uplifting, offering readers a delightful blend of LGBTQIA+ representation and themes of identity and empowerment.

The story follows Blanca's escape from her mother's stifling expectations to chase her dreams of fashion design in the Big Apple. Upon her arrival, she finds refuge with the endearing baker Emile and his eclectic group of friends. Each character brings their own unique flavor to the narrative, and I couldn't help but feel like I was part of their quirky, supportive family.

The charming cast and their dynamic interactions gave me sitcom vibes, and I found myself rooting for Blanca as she navigated the challenges of pursuing her dream. Her journey resonated deeply with me, and I admired her courage and determination in the face of adversity.

Overall, Eat Your Heart Out Vol. 1 is a delightful read that celebrates friendship, acceptance, and the pursuit of one's passions. I eagerly anticipate further installments and the opportunity to delve deeper into the lives of these captivating characters.

So; the vibes were there, the story was there, the pacing was there, it was beautifully drawn and the queer rep was perfect. However, the characters were just not believable. There's an 18 y/o gal who comes to NYC and automatically finds: friends, a house, a date, and also seems to just be super wise and talented. It's all cute but I want something more real.

This was a very cute start to a series of a Midwest girl chasing her dreams in the Big Apple. It's a very common story trope, but this time, it's full of LGBT characters. I found the characters both realistic and endearing, though a bit idealized. There isn't really much about the larger plot, this volume focuses more on the characters and their backstories. There are a LOT of characters in the main cast, almost too many. With so many characters, it can get a little messy as to who is who and who has what back story. There are only whispers about what is going on with Blanca's mother back home. This was a cute start, but it's not a strong one. Hopefully, the story gets stronger by the next volume.

I am adoring this story and super excited for volume two. I always love a found family focus and this is setting up those relationships very well. Blanca is wonderful and I’m enjoying learning more about her and all her new friends. I’m also very curious to see what develops with Charlie. Overall I love the art style, am intrigued by all the characters and their backstories, and looking forward to seeing how they grow and the plot expands. Great first volume to introduce us to this series.

Comics are meant to be fun, and sometimes fairytale in outlook. To be read and enjoyed. Sorry for the segway: What a ‘controlling, witch for a mother’!!!! Back to the fairytale. Blanca leaves home to follow her own dreams. But dreams aren’t matched in real life. Then serendipity smiles. She finds herself a place to stay, and becomes a positive influence in her flatmates life. Life is looking up for Blanca after all. But this is only vol 1. Will Blanca’s dreams be dashed as her mother finds a way to haul her back home? Thank you to ONI Press and NetGalley for the comic ARC. The views expressed are all mine.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this eARC of 'Eat Your Heart Out Vol. 1' by Terry Blas and Matty Newton.

'Eat Your Heart Out Vol. 1' is such a fun graphic novel. With a mixture of great storytelling and characters, they've got the story down to a T but then you get into the ART. The art is gorgeous and it's so unique, every character looks different and it just adds to the beautiful storytelling.

Graphic Novel palette cleansers are my favorite in between really heavy books and I completely devoured this one! It was fast paced, with a lot of representation in it for me. I also found the characters to be funny and relatable and could see many volumes coming from this dynamic. If you are into found families this book is for you and you won’t be able to stop yourself from falling in love with all the different characters we are introduced to. Definitely a 5 star read for me!
