honestly i went into this strictly for the cover *it was cute:). i adored the writing it felt like a big hug! 4/5 stars thank you for the chance to arc read.
If you like books like Dead Boy Detectives you'll love this story. It's an entertaining, poignant, and sad tale about coming to terms with who you are and what your life is or is becoming. Richly told, the story and characters pulled me in from the first page to the last and I couldn't put it down. This book is a great read if you're in the mood for a cosy action packed thriller.
The Other Ones by Fran Hart is a precious Queer YA contemporary romance between opposites, one of whom lives in a house believed to be haunted.
I loved our entire cast of characters. Salem is a loner and Pax has golden retriever energy. Salem ends up in a friendship group of four that includes him, Pax the "eccentric " new kid, the jock, and the once popular girl. The four of them shouldn't work on the surface but they do and its wonderful. Then you have Salem's sister and Pax's mom who were great addition's to the story.
Salem and Pax become unlikely friends that turn in to a sweet and innocent relationship between the two. They were utterly adorable 🥰 Besides the growth of their relationship and the day to day that goes along with surviving high school, Salem battles with grief and the ghosts of his past.
Overall, I adored The Other Ones by Fran Hart. A sweet Queer YA with crushes, first kisses, misfit friends, graveyard picnics, pumpkin carving, grief, healing, and a happy ending. With spooky vibes, this makes a perfect light read for the Halloween season!
This was a cute coming of age story with bonus ghosts and a big surprise twist. I loved all the characters and thought they were portrayed very well and I genuinely enjoyed the plot- the big twist was very well done and definitely added to the storyline.
The best way to sum up this book is cozy. When I requested it I didn't realize it had been out for a few years and was just being republished, but I'd never heard of it in 2022 so it was brand new to me. I much prefer the new cover too, for what it's worth.
The book itself was good. I enjoyed the slower pace of it, it felt comfortable and homey, though I was slightly let down that it wasn't as spooky as it made itself out to be in the description. It was much more Casper the Friendly Ghost when I was expecting something more along the lines of Practical Magic, which is to say whimsical but still a lil spooky.
The romance is a nice, fun, slowish burn which is something I always appreciate. The book overall was very well written, easy to follow, and the prose itself was very interesting and drew me in. The same can be said about the characters, which was a largely diverse cast with their own personal stories that were all handled perfectly.
In all, I enjoyed the book and the only thing that I expected to get but didn't were a few bumps in the night.
I was super excited when I was able to get an Arc of this book on Netgalley. The plot and writing in this book was chef's kiss, however the romance between the two characters seemed a little flat to me. But overall I really enjoyed this book.
4 stars
I extremely enjoyed reding this book. I felt very close to the characters and what they felt and was rooting for the from the very beginning and wanted nothing more than for them to succeed. I really enjoyed the aspect of the haunted house and the ghosts as characters as well as the eventual romance between the two main characters. Thank you net galley for approving me for an ARC!!!
The cutest ghost story.
It's a bit spooky, but not horror for sure. Think Sabrina the Teenage Witch instead of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
And the ghosts are (mostly) friendly.
Sal & Pax are frankly adorable.
Highly recommend this one, especially to reluctant readers. (I liked the new cover art, versus the creepy Halloween version that doesn't seem to match the story.
I loooved this book!! It had a meandering story that felt like going on a long walk, or a journey, until it suddenly started pouring and the team needed to reroute and regroup, and then the sun came back out and they could continue on the journey, albiet a little differently than before. I imagine this is exactly what Sal's life felt like. Super sweet romance between boys who are trying to find themselves and how they fit together. Lots of family feels.
Thank you to NetGalley for this title!!
I want to protect Sal and Pax from the harshness of the world at all costs.
This is definitely a novel that will appeal to fans of Heartstopper and readers of queer tender YA stories that focus on friendship, family and first love.
I talked about this book in my video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UmaxI-XYqo
I think this book was good. I requested it because it sounded interesting, and it was. The cast of characters was interesting and all so different from one another. I love the setting and environment this book created it really helped to create well rounded and dynamic characters
Many thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was pleasantly surprised with this book, it was a fun quick read. I loved all the characters and it had a good plot. The romance was perfect and I would definitely recommend this book.
This book was really difficult to get into. The description doesn't match the book super well, in the sense that it makes it out to be more supernatural than it truly is. The characters however are written well with their own individual stories and that truly helps the book be more interesting. The plot twist is done well, though slightly predictable. Overall though, I would definitely recommend this book to people who are looking for queer spooky books.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. I was hoping for a bit more spookiness given the synopsis, but by the end I was in love with the romance, characters, and their bonds. The writing can be very concise, which either helps the scene or hurts it. The plot often needs big events to happen in order to be driven forward. Despite this, "The Other Ones" is easy to read and allows you to embrace those cozy fall vibes. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am glad I was able to read it. The ending was not one I had anticipated, though one I was utterly content with.
I found this to be a cute and charming read with characters who leap off the page. Really well done and engaging. It definitely gave me Alice Oseman meets Gilmore Girls vibes.
I expected something more spooky, but this was a sweet and cozy and lovely story about Salem and Pax and love. I loved that the ending left off on a happy and hopeful note.
The Other Ones, by Fran Hart, was a charming read. The story felt cozy and sweet, and was an enjoyable tale. In this story, Salem, the main character, truly goes on a transformative journey where he learns more about his family, friends, and himself- with the help of some ghosts and a bundle of boy named Pax. While this story was hard to follow at times, it all was pieced together at the end, to make a fulfilling conclusion to the warm hug of a book. I definitely recommend this tale to fans of Heartstopper, Meet Cute Diary, and other similar books. With a diverse cast and a stunning plot, this book was truly a great find.
a beautiful prose on love, grief, loss, and the way your loved ones can haunt you even if they haven't been around for a while. I had thought maybe at the start that Pax would show up, but turn out to have been a ghost all along, and as I read more I thought that that would be really sad if it were true. What hit me even harder though, was that the ghosts in Sal's house were really just repeated bad dreams of his mother leaving that haunted his every night. I think Pax was what Sal needed all along. The sunshine weirdo to Sal's brooding emo who could help him through anything. And Sal's weirdo friends who were weird but loveable in their own ways, and never failed to show up for him. It was bittersweet, sad, and touching all at once.
An adorable Heartstopper-esque meets Gilmore Girls type of book! I'm always a sucker for grumpy meets sunshine types of stories, and Sal and Pax did not disappoint.
I picked this for the premise of a haunted house. With ghosts. I was looking forward to it. I felt like there were some missing important chapters. Let’s just say there was nothing spooky about this book. I liked Sal and Pax slow romance . And it was an easy reading. Just not what I expected from a haunting book. The ending left everything hopeful which I appreciated. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for my ARC.
