An absolutely charming graphic novel with nice art and an engaging storyline! Can’t wait for the next sequel and can’t recommend it enough to all young cat and graphic novel fans out there, will be ordering it for the school library too.
A perfect follow up to the first Cat on the Run. I can't wait to see where the series ends up. It's funny and engaging for the kiddos.
Another great graphic novel my daughter throughly enjoyed. It was fast paced and funny. A great sequel.
3 stars = Good, solid, fine
The beginning of this was a bit of a slog, but the island has some funny moments and the big reveal at the end was unexpected. I didn't like this enough to stick with the series - It's just not a great fit for me.
There is a cat who became the world’s biggest internet sensation. Princess Beautiful was tricked with a cucumber, and the video of her freaking out went viral. She then made more videos, so she wouldn’t look like an idiot with that first video, and her other videos went even more viral. Princess Beautiful became the star of the internet. And then she accidentally got ahold of the nuclear codes and went on the run.
She got caught though, and was sent to prison, and that’s where we start this story. Someone appears to break her out of her jail cell, and before she knows it, she’s waking up on the island of Bratislava. Princess Beautiful was broken out of jail by a goat named Marv who tells her that he knows she’s innocent. Because he was once accused of something he didn’t do. He could tell that she was a scapegoat too. (It’s just a coincidence that he’s a scapegoat and a goat.)
So Marv makes sure that Princess Beautiful is armed with nunchucks, and she uses the internet to watch videos to teach her how to use them. So she’s ready when they finally go to the missile silo, to try to figure out what’s really going on. But they’re interrupted by the marshal that’s wanting to put Princess Beautiful back in jail as well as by the wealthy media tycoon who is trying to get Princess Beautiful on his side. The video of this gets uploaded live and breaks the internet.
And then things get really crazy.
Cat on the Run in Cucumber Madness! is the second Cat on the Run book, from Aaron Blabey, the same mad genius who brought us the Bad Guys books. It’s whimsical, funny, and whip-smart. There are lots of illustrations that bring the story to life, and the humor has layers, so there are giggles for the adults as well as the kids.
Cat on the Run in Cucumber Madness! is lots of fun for cat lovers of all ages, and it’s the type of book I would have read over and over as a kid. Or as an adult. My one complaint is that it ends on a cliffhanger, so I’ll have to get the next book to find out what happens next. But it’s worth it, even if just for the scene where Princess Beautiful uses her nunchucks. It’s just so clever.
Egalleys for Cat on the Run in Cucumber Madness! were provided by Scholastic through NetGalley, with many thanks, but I liked it so much I bought the Kindle version for myself.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review
We loved reading the sequel to Cat on the Run. It's a quick and fun read. I cannot wait to add this to my classroom library!
My son gave this 2 thumbs up! It was a great graphic novel to read and he read it all in one sitting because he was so enthralled.
Minus a tiny star quarter from this mom because this (like most of this author's books) ends on a cliff hanger. And of course my kid is always asking when the next one is coming out already. So Mr Blabey, please write books faster or don't leave the kids hanging?!
"Cat on the Run: Book Two" is a fun and zany graphic novel adventure. Written by Aaron Blabey, the talented author behind the beloved "Bad Guys" series, this book continues the story of a pampered cat who discovers the world isn't quite what they thought it was and without the internet.
The plot is action-packed and brimming with quirky adolescent humor and fun characters that will particularly resonate with tweens. Cat lovers will love the laser light and silly play on the internet phenomenon of cats being afraid of cucumbers, which is cleverly woven into the narrative alongside a memorable villain.
The illustrations, predominantly in black and white, are lively and engaging, perfectly complementing the whimsical tone of the story. Aaron Blabey's distinct artistic style adds an extra layer of enjoyment, making each page a visual treat.
My ten-year-old couldn't stop laughing while reading this one, and it was a joy to see them so engaged with a book. We can't wait to see what happens in the sequel.
Thank you to Netgalley for this fun read!
I tried reading this with my five year old and unfortunately this was not the book for his age group. We often enjoy reading graphic novels together but there was way more text than pictures and we both realized after a few pages that it wasn't what we were looking for. If you have a student who's into chapter books then this would probably hit the right age for you. I can't speak to the content because of this stumbling block. Definitely a book for older readers!
Picking up where book #1 left off, Princess Beautiful has vanished and everyone believes she is now a villain. In the second installment we find what has happened to Beautiful and who has taken her. Is she truly the villain everyone has painted her out to be? Will she find a way out?
Overall rating 3 /5
Blabey’s humor is spot on for children, both of my kids enjoyed the sly jokes and silliness. The news reporter sections were an interesting way to move the storyline along. We have not read the first book so it was a little confusing on what was happening. We wished there was more background for young readers who may pick up this book to read before the first one.
We love all of Aaron Blabey's books. He is like Mo Willems in how well he uses facial expressions of his characters to make the story clear to hesitant readers. He is funny and fills his characters with personality. These books are a great choice for my 7-year-old son, and my 5-year-old likes them too.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC - I will purchase for my library.
My daughter devoured this book in one sitting. She said at the end, she wasn’t sure if she was a fan of the twist, but that she liked it almost as much as the first one and hopes that Aaron Blabey will write more in this series.
Aaron Blabey has a talent for capturing young readers’ attention with his creativity. I’m glad to see this new series and highly recommend this author’s work. I’ve seen the engagement with young readers firsthand in my teaching work.
Cat on the Run is a series created by the much loved series Bad Guys and it is a must read! What is better than reading a story about cats? A staple at the library and at our home library. We look forward to each new release. 5 stars.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the free copy of Cat on the Run in Cucumber Madness! by Aaron Blabey in exchange for my honest review.
With bold illustrations and a plot that’s just as engaging as always, this iteration of CAT ON THE RUN is a perfect addition to our list of books. (FYI, the review criteria in our house is whether they ask me to request the book at the library after it’s officially been published. This was an immediate request.) The 7 year old was thrilled to have another adventure to follow and as always, I was delighted to see her embracing books with the kind of enthusiasm that I remember having as a child. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance reader’s copy. All opinions are entirely my (and my little reader’s) own.
My kids LOVED this book. 3rd and 5th graders. Already big fans of The Bad Guys, the humor just continues similarly in Cat on the Run. Even the most reluctant readers will find something to enjoy!
So good! These graphic novels/beginner chapter books are perfect for fans of Dav Pilkey, Lincoln Pierce, and Jeff Kinney. The pacing and plot is FAST, but accessible enough to keep up with. The cucumber element--hilarious, and while the stakes are high, they aren't stressful necessarily for the reader. Also, this would likely be interesting for adults with the many puns.
Aaron Blabey found a winning formula for writing graphic novels that appeal to elementary age kids. I cannot keep his "Bad Guys" series on my elementary library shelves, and once I introduced the first "Cat on the Run" book to them as an alternative, I have an enormous waiting list for it AND multiple requests for Book 2 once it's published. It is breaking hearts that they won't get it until next school year, but they are happy when I tell them I've had a sneak peek at Book 2 and it is just as funny and silly as Book 1.
Another win by Aaron Blabey! My kids love anything written by this author, and Cat on the Run 2 was no exception! The laughs were endless and I would be willing to bet my kids read this one over and over!

This book was a fun and fast read for my eight year old. The book was a funny sequel and the illustrations in the book were amazing. This series is very fun and we look forward to more books in this series.
