Lizzie and Darcy are back with a new case. Lizzie has been hired to find out who set fire to a warehouse and has roped Darcy in to help along the way.
As with the first book, nothing is what it seems and there are lots of twists and turns. I was surprised with the ending and how everything tied together! The characters were reminiscent of the originals in Pride and Prejudice but with a modern twist. Lizzie's headstrong nature takes on a daring edge and she finds herself in trouble at times but luckily Darcy is there to help!
This was a great cosy mystery with a little romance sprinkled in along the way.
This sequel to Pride and Premeditation was a fun and cozy historical mystery. I thought that the author did a nice job of maintaining the core values of these well known characters, while taking their story in a new direction. Some of their actions and dialogue were perhaps a little too modern and out of character for them, but not enough that I didn’t enjoy the story.
Lizzie is just as head strong and opinionated as the source character, but she is much more daring in her actions and desires. Darcy is also mostly like his source, but is far more tolerant of Lizzie’s actions than the original would have been. I really liked how their romance was developed in this story, nice and slow and mostly within the societal norms of the historical period. Lizzie’s penchant for getting herself and Darcy into trouble was also quite fun.
The mystery was well done. Lots of misdirection and I was a bit surprised by the reveal of who was really in charge of the whole criminal aspect of the story. The pacing of the story was also well done and kept me wanting to continue the story. My only disappointment in the story was some of the more modern dialogue and actions of the characters. I just felt that at times we were not in Regency London, which took away from the story.
While this is a sequel, it could certainly be a standalone. It would perhaps be better if you had read the first book, which is more of a retelling of Pride and Prejudice than this one is, but is certainly not a hindrance. If you are looking for a cozy historical mystery, especially one based on beloved characters, than this is a series you should consider.
I have such a soft spot for anything about Pride and Prejudice. I was really excited for In want of a Suspect being another story including Lizzie and Darcy. Tizrah Price did a great job of creating a fun new mystery but having the core of who these characters are still there.
The mystery is good and kept me interested throughout. I can’t wait to see what will happen in the next one.
Thank you NetGalley, Tizrah Price and Harper Teen for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was absolutely thrilled to learn we would be getting more Darcy and Lizzie books in a spin off series from Pride and Premeditation! And this did not disappoint. In Price's P&P retellings, Darcy and Lizzie are both solicitors that find themselves often collaborating on legal cases. In this one, Lizzie and Darcy team up to investigate the arson/murder case of a local storefront at the request of the surviving brother, but things aren't adding up and a key witness is killed in broad daylight. With growing speculation of the those closest to the case, and growing speculation of the amount of unchaperoned time Lizzie and Darcy spend together even at the expense of Darcy's position, the pair may be in over their heads in more ways than one.
I'm very picky with my P&P retellings and while I often found myself wondering "Yeah, but would OG Darcy and Lizzie REALLY do this/that?" My answer: I don't care. I was swept up in the story, the mystery, the suspicion and of course the romance. Absolute blast reading this one and now I begin the impatient wait for the second book in this series. One of if not my favorite book of the year!
CW: Death, Violence, Arson, Poverty/Classism, Anti-Immigrant (due to war)
Thanks to my library, last week I discovered 'Pride and Premeditation' via BorrowBox as an audiobook. And while I did wonder why the author just didn't create brand new characters in their spirit, I was still captivated with this reimagining of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice with Lizzie and Darcy as solicitors who end up uniting to clear Bingley of murder. To my delight I discovered 'In Want of a Suspect' was up for review so I quickly clicked the 'request button'.
Set a year after the events of the first book, Lizzie is hired by an old client whose warehouse has burned down to find a mysterious woman seen just before. Naturally Lizzie can't help but embroil Darcy as her partner, much to his boss's ire. Meanwhile Mrs Bennett is determined to force Bingly to propose to Jane and marry Lizzie off to Darcy.
Well-paced with compelling lead characters, I breezed right through this book which balances the budding romance between Lizzie and Darcy and the mystery. While it was fairly easy to work out who dunnit, I was still entertained, plus we had cameos from Emma Woodhouse and the Dashwood sisters. I also appreciated the social issues of race, class and anti-immigrant sentiment of Regency era society being woven in. I can't wait for the next one and am curious how the author plans to resolve Lizzie racing off unaccompanied with Darcy to solve mysteries.
Thanks to HarperCollins Children's Books and Netgalley for the ARC.
I didn’t realize this was an offshoot of another series. I’m sure it would have helped a bit with backstory references but if you know Pride & Prejudice, you can guess. In Want of a Subject has our favorite couple working as solicitors and “consulting” on a case together. It’s a nice little mystery and on the verge of cozy. I adore P&P so I will take any form of it! It was a quick read and the characters seemed true to their ideals and personalities.
Thank you NetGalley and HarperTeen for allowing me to read and review this!
So happy to be back with Lizzie and Darcy.
This is a spinoff from another series. You can read it by itself, but I recommend reading at least book one from the other series first.
Without getting into the mystery too much, I have to say that I liked this one a lot. It kept me wanting to read and not put it down. The addition of Guy was great and I was happy to see many repeat characters. The book has lots of feminism without going overboard. This one stood out a bit because of the other characters. I loved the majority of them and hope to see some of them in book two.
I gave this book 5 stars. Can't wait for the next one.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for my earc.
This was a great start to another mystery duology which follows Lizzie Bennet and Mr. Darcy from the Jane Austen Mystery series. This was such a fun and fast read and I love the dynamic and chemistry between Lizzie and Mr. Darcy and how we got to see Marianna and Elinor from Sense and Second Degree Murder who help them. The mystery was very good and kept me guessing until the very end and I love the bennett family craziness especially Mrs. Bennet. I can wait to read the next one.
Thanks to Harper Collins and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.
Quite fun, if a little rule-bendy. Though I never thought I would say this in a million years, I could have done with a bit more Mrs. Bennett.
Opening In Want of a Suspect by Tirzah Price feels like stepping back into the cozy chaos of the Bennett home. She writes the women of Austen like I think Jane herself would have written them had she had the benefit of a 21st century culture and mindset-reminding you that Lizzie really could do anything if literary freedoms of the time allowed. Like her other Jane Austen Murder Mystery Series novels, In Want of a Suspect is fast paced and seamlessly blends together the conflict and romance you want from Darcy and Lizzie with an intriguing mystery that delves into complicated subjects like immigration, war, feminism and how to live under the burden of familial expectations. It’s also finally rewarding the internal Darcy/Lizzie dialogue of every reader who has screamed for more since being introduced to Pride and Prejudice in our youth. This is one of my favorite 2024 reads and I can’t wait to see what Tirzah does next (I hope I’m not wrong that there were a few hints throughout about what may be coming…). Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC copy for review (now, rereading all three prior novels ASAP!).
Tirzah Price's updated Jane Austen mysteries are my favorite comfort read. Fans of Pride and Prejudice will be excited to learn that In Want of a Suspect is the first in a series of mysteries starring Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. I thoroughly enjoyed the cross over with Marianne and Elinor from Sense and Second Degree Murder, and look forward to more mystery solving and girl bossing. The mysteries always keep me guessing, and this was no exception. I thought this was a lot of fun and can't wait to read more.
Tirzah Price has given lovers of Jane Austen another opportunity to dive back into the world of Lizzie Bennett in In Want of a Suspect. In her newest historical novel, Price celebrates Elizabeth Bennett’s intellect, courage and confidence in a novel with a believable, engaging setting and a plot that is well-paced and entertaining.
When Lizzie is hired to solve a fire that breaks out in a client’s warehouse and kills a man, she is pulled into a tangled mess of secrets and lies that threatens Darcy’s job, her safety, and ultimately, both of their lives. Undaunted, Lizzie uncovers a smuggling ring and saves an innocent woman from a scheming scoundrel.
In Lizzie Bennett, readers see a young woman with brains and bravery who stands her ground against society who wants to close the doors she pushes open for herself and others.
Thank you to HarperTeen, the author, and NetGalley for the ARC!! Yay!!!

This was so cute and cozy. It was an easy read and felt like a hug with all the amazing characters from the Jane Austen novels.
I loved seeing the characters from several Jane Austen novels (Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, and Emma to name a few) help each other solve a murder mystery.
Of course this Darcy was a little less brooding than the original haha
When a former client finds himself in need of more assistance, he asks Lizzie to look into things. She in turn asks Darcy to accompany her to do some research, and they find themselves at the scene of a warehouse fire. Bodies soon start piling up, and the mortal danger the pair face grows, but that could be nothing in comparison to the danger of their growing feelings for each other. The reappearance of a former love interest of Darcy's adds to the turmoil, and the two young investigative lawyers find themselves at odds with not only the facts of the case, but each other.
This was a great revisit to these characters, and I'm excited to see that they get their own series to have a slew of adventures. This one wraps up neatly, but also leaves some things open to lead to the next installment. There is plenty of historical background included in this one as politics of the time are brought into play, which helps keep the reader enmeshed in the time period as they follow the characters to resolving the case.
Perfect for previous fans of Price's novels, this is a great read for fans of Jane Austen and the like.
I enjoyed this book until the ending. I didn’t realize it was associated with a previous series until I started it, and for the most part I didn’t feel like I was missing information by not having read the original series, however the ending was a little less satisfying as someone who is joining the party late. I really enjoyed how well the author worked with Lizzie and Darcy’s personalities and used that to create an interesting story and mystery, but I wish the semi-twist at the end didn’t involve a character from the previous books who was only mentioned in passing in this book. She didn’t feel intertwined into this story enough for that to make sense. Maybe if this was a direct sequel/part of a series, I could understand it more, but it was my impression this was a spin-off new series, so I didn’t expect someone from a previous book in a different series to end up playing such a big role. I did still find the story enjoyable and captivating.
I quite enjoyed reading about Darcy and Lizzie again. The unfolding mystery kept me intrigued throughout and the chemistry between Darcy and Lizzie did not disappoint. The way they understood each other and the fears they each held about the future, was a pleasant addition. The side characters were great to read about too. Loved all the Bennett family craziness as well as Henry. I hope there are more misadventures to come.
Thank you to the publisher for the free copy in exchange for my honest review.
I adored Pride and Premeditation and was thrilled to revisit the characters again with promise of more to come. I'm a sucker for books based on classic literature, and it's made extra fun here because the characters really bubble alive into their own individuals, inspired by but not beholden to the originals. That allows for the plot and mystery to be all the more playful, which is exactly what I'm here for.
I am a bit of a Janeite, so although I have yet to read Tizrah Price's main Austen series, I did request this one and I did enjoy it. In this new series, Lizzy B. & Darcy are both lawyers and they investigate together an arson/murder case. I liked how strong Lizzy is portrayed here a lot, though Darcy had some changes I didn't care for. Overall though, it was a solid, cozy type mystery with Austen's iconic characters & I will check out the next installment & possibly Price's back list. My thanks to Net Galley & the publisher for my review copy - a pleasure indeed!
I accidentally didn't realize this was part of a series when I requested it, so I haven't read the other books. I don't think it's necessary to read the other books to understand and enjoy this one, but I do think it may have changed my reading experience a bit. I do intend to go back and read Pride and Premeditation and its sequels, though, since I did enjoy this book.
Set in a slightly modernized regency England, Lizzie and her friend Darcy are hired to solve the mystery of a warehouse fire by the brother of a man who died in the fire. This was a solid, enjoyable book with an interesting mystery that evolved and took some turns and sometimes surprised me. From the perspective of a Jane Austen book adaptation, this book wasn't really an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, but moreso inspired by Jane Austen's books with certain characters and elements included which feel fun. Characters do mostly feel in keeping with the spirit of Jane Austen's books, and Lizzie and Darcy are cute. I expect that Pride and Premeditation might be more of a straight adaptation, but I don't know for sure, since I need to go back and read it.
Full confession: I reread pride and premeditation before reading this book. I generally like to reread books before reading a spin off or watching the show, so don’t shoot cause I’m literally just being a girl. Now, with Pride and Premeditation Price uses Jane Austen‘s characters and essentially not much except what is already given to her (besides the amazing mystery twist), so this book was bound to be a lot tougher to write, but she did very well! Price blends her own characters with Jane Austins very fluidly. I was also of course extremely happy to find a Pride and Prejudice remake that didn’t make me want to stop living. The reason I wasn’t able to give this full marks was because of an odd twist Price tried to add to Darcy‘s character which almost threw off the originally magical relationship between Lizzie and Darcy and her attempt to soften Darcy‘s character did not go unnoticed nor was it appreciated. Otherwise, I was splendidly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book and how absolutely thrilled I am to see more of Lizzie and Darcy. Thank you so much to NetGalley and HarperCollins for lending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
