The Treasure Hunters Club by Tom Ryan is a captivating mystery that blends adventure, suspense, and a touch of romance. Set in the charming seaside town of Maple Bay, Nova Scotia, the story revolves around three strangers drawn to the legend of a long-lost pirate treasure. But as they dig deeper into the mystery, they soon realize that there are darker secrets buried beneath the surface—and not just gold.
Peter Barnett, nearing 40 with little direction in life, receives a mysterious letter that leads him to his family's mansion in Maple Bay. Seventeen-year-old Dandy Feltzen is struggling with the loss of her grandfather and embarks on a mission to solve a mystery that haunted him in his final days. Meanwhile, Cass Jones, a failed author looking for inspiration, lands a housesitting job in Maple Bay, where she stumbles upon the perfect subject matter for her next book—and a potential romance.
The paths of these three characters intersect in unexpected ways, and Ryan does an excellent job building tension as they uncover long-buried secrets. The narrative is rich with atmospheric details, and the picturesque yet eerie setting of Maple Bay adds a sense of mystery that is perfectly suited to the story.
With a strong cast of characters and a compelling plot full of twists, The Treasure Hunters Club is an exciting read for fans of historical mysteries and treasure hunts. Ryan masterfully blends elements of suspense, intrigue, and personal growth, making it a highly enjoyable and engaging novel.
The Treasure Hunters Club by Tom Ryan is a cozy mystery told from multiple POV's. It was a bit slow at first but about halfway through it picked up the pace. There were a few unexpected twists in the story and it was a quick and fun read. The characters and the plot was done beautifully, with a bit of family drama in the middle. I felt like the ending was missing something but i overall enjoyed this story quite much.
Set in Nova Scotia the book follows the intertwining of three lives , Peter, a forty year old unemployed man, failed writer Cass in her thirties and seventeen year old Dandy, as they join forces to find the titular treasure. They follow clues and hints from the past, letters, notebooks and torn pages, a true paper trail , that leads to unexpected twists and turns. There is a lot of suspense and tension along with big surprises along the way. Great read!
TL;DR: it was fine. there's one solid twist, but otherwise I slogged through this one a bit. There are a lot of characters and timelines, and I kept having to put this one down and pick it back up and it made for a disjointed unmemorable reading experience. I'd be open to reading something else from the author for executing a solid twist.
Overall it was really fun. It’s a different kind of myself/thriller than I’ve read, at least in a while. It had a cozy mystery feel, kindof like Antique Hunter’s guide to murder (which I still have to review. Oopsies) and elements that were reminiscent of Goonies… which always makes me happy. Don’t make me feel like a 👵🏻 by telling me you don’t know Goonies. Mmmmkay?
But I digress.
Back to our story.
There was a lot to love. I binged it.
The characters, the overall plot (I love a good treasure hunt), some family drama and long lost family, friendships with history, and a Canadian setting made for a good story overall.
At about the two third mark something happened (I don’t know how to tell this without spoilers 🙈) and it felt really sudden and out of place. And then it was over and everyone moved on too easily.
And there was a character that was probably meant to be a giant misdirection but then that was resolved too easily and it just felt weird to me.
AND THEN the ending wrapped up with something that just deserved a bit more fleshing out to make it believable.
So I just think that the editor needed to give it one more look to smooth it over, flesh it out and blend those things out a bit more.
Because it had so much good.
The review might not seem like it but I really did enjoy it. Truly. I’m still recommending it as a fun, cozy bit of entertainment.
Things got a little unhinged toward the end of this one, which just added to my enjoyment of it. Although missing treasure does play an important role in the story, it’s ultimately more about relationships and digging up old secrets to solve a long-standing mystery.
The story is told from multiple POVs. We have Peter, a 40-year-old looking for a new start and trying to reconnect with the only family he has left. Then there’s Cass, a 30-something struggling writer looking for inspiration and trying to figure out what’s next in her life. Finally, we have 17-year-old Dandy, grieving her grandfather and learning to navigate life without him while also trying to fulfill his last wish for her.
Dandy was my absolute favorite, a quirky and unwavering budding detective determined to forge her own path and solve her mystery no matter who or what stood in her way. She was honest, sharp, and funny, and her character was a big part of why I liked this book so much.
The story did lag a bit in a few spots but it started to fly at about the halfway mark. Things started moving quickly and there were a couple of very unexpected twists that turned the story completely on its head. All the threads converged for a pretty satisfying resolution and the last couple of pages left me smiling and happy for Dandy.
This was a quick and fun read and I’ll be keeping my eyes open for future cozy adventures from this author.
Thanks NetGally and Grove Atlantic for the advanced copy.
I really enjoyed this book. I actually held off on reading it for a little while because I started it once and it didn't really match up with the sense I got from the blurb. I picked it up again after I kind of forgot what it was meant to be about and that really worked for me. I think a more upbeat, find the pirate treasure adventure. This book really isn't that. It reminded me much more of a Kate Morton novel. Lots of back and forth in time and the historical mystery unfolded along with the current time line. Dandy was the stand-out character in my opinion, but I also appreciated Cass and the red herring characters we got along the way. Overall, a very solid book, though I do think it suffered from poor blurbing.
This is a brilliant, fun mystery which is easy to read, very entertaining and comes with a good twist that I didn't see coming. The three main characters are so engaging. I completely recommend this book if you're looking for one story that you look forward to returning to all day.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a DRC.
this book is perfect for anyone who loves the goonies. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! between the mystery and suspence and the family vibes this book had everything.
At first I found this a little confusing, there were a lot of characters and different POV's that were introduced early and it took me a while to figure out where we were going. But oh man, once we got going we really got going. The twists and turns in this were wild and I so, so, enjoyed the story. I stayed up way too late to finish the book, I could not put it down. We get so many different storylines and the way they all come together is so interesting. Each story/timeline was fully wrapped up and there were no lose ends hanging at the end, it was such a satisfying read! The ending felt a little abrupt but other than that I thought this was really entertaining and well done
Thanks to Netgalley, Tom Ryan and Atlantic Press for this e-ARC that I chose to read and review
This had a great story. I did enjoy it-though keeping all the characters straight wasn't always easy. I hope the print book has a chart of the characters in the front. I didn't love the writing, though. The big twist towards the end-I did not figure that out-the author did a good job surprising the reader there!
(4/5 stars) This book really drew me in and DELIVERED with twists and turns I was not expecting! I was intrigued by the premise (Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone meets The Goonies? How could I not??) This read would be perfect for spooky season and cozying up with a good cup of tea.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4 b/c of the plot twists! I didn't see any of them coming!
For nearly a century, people have ventured to the idyllic seaside town of Maple Bay, Nova Scotia, in search of the legendary lost Obelisk Treasure. The locals know there’s more to the mystery than just gold, though. And now three strangers unite unexpectedly to discover the truth. First, Peter Barnett reunites with his estranged family in their Bellwoods mansion. Next, seventeen-year-old Dandy Feltzen seeks to fulfill her beloved Grandy's final request by solving the mystery he spent his entire life chasing. Finally, Cass Jones receives a housesitting opportunity where she stumbles on the perfect subject matter for her next book. Can these three folks uncover the shocking truths around town that may or may not still be buried?
Although this story is told from three different perspectives, it makes sense. I could put the book down, pick it up and know exactly what was happening.
I really like grandma Mirabel. She's a spitfire who knows what she wants!
The book contains a decent amount of profanity and violence.
The Treasure Hunters Club is a captivating mystery set in a picturesque seaside town with a dark secret: a legendary pirate treasure that has drawn seekers for over a century.
Peter, nearing 40, is invited to the family mansion, Dandy, grieving her grandfather, embarks on a quest to solve a mystery he dedicated his life to, and Cass, a struggling author, stumbles upon a story that could make her career. Together, they unravel a mystery that has defined the town for generations.
I thoroughly enjoyed Welcome to Maple Bay, especially the unexpected twist at the end that took the story in a direction I didn’t see coming. The suspense built throughout the novel, and Ryan did a great job blending personal stakes with the larger mystery of the treasure. The town of Maple Bay itself feels like a character, with its eerie, isolated beauty adding to the tension.
The book spans multiple generations, and I struggled to keep track of the complex family connections. A character list would’ve been helpful, as it was sometimes hard to remember who was related to whom. That said, the map of Maple Bay was a great tool and helped me orient myself.
Overall, this is a well-crafted mystery with great twists and a strong sense of place. Despite the challenges with the character relationships, I found the story gripping, and the ending was worth the read. I highly recommend it to fans of suspense and treasure hunts.
The Treasure Hungers Club brings together an unlikely cast of characters attempting to solve the mystery of supposed hidden pirates treasure. Long dead secrets are brought to light, and some surprising twists keep the reader guessing along the way. There are a lot of characters/relationships to track, but it all comes together.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #GroveAtlantic for a free copy of #TheTreasureHuntersClub by Tom Ryan. All opinions are my own.
This was a fun read! It's not super gory, but it definitely suspenseful and a page turner. The setting should be considered another character- loved the eerie vibes,
After seeing this compared to The Goonies, my expectations were high and sadly this book did not quite live up to it.Let me preface this by saying I listened to the audiobook and I feel like it may have hurt my enjoyment a bit. This book follows three POVs that change frequently the audiobook had the same narrator for all which made it so hard to keep straight whose POV I was under now.I feel like if the chapters had the POV listed, or only having one POV would have been easier to follow. The characters I had a hard time getting into Dandy was enjoyable but Peter and Cass were forgettable and just caused me to get confused. I also feel like by advertising this as similar to the goonies they did this a disservice. When I think Goonies I think action packed adventure, this book felt more like a cozy mystery with some pirates and treasure mixed in. The writing was fun when I wasn’t trying to figure out what character I was following. This is my first book by this author and I would give this author another chance while this wasn’t my favorite it was still enjoyable. I would like to thank NetGalley and the publishers for a chance to read this book for an honest review.

A great action mystery set in Nova Scotia. Dandy Felton attends the Maple Bay historical Society as it was one of her grannie’s last wishes. This society is supposed to be solving the mystery of the legendary Obelisk Treasure. This obelisk was apparently was lost in the 13th century and buried by pirates. The Society Five are all descendants of the original club members. The most enthusiastic current member is Maribel who recently has discovered her late father’sHenry’s diary. Mirabel has also recently connected with Peter, her grandson who comes back to Maple Bay. He also ends up finding his grandmother at the bottom of the staircase. Cass is another character a failed writer wanting to start over. She finds herself with the opportunity to housesit for a year in Maple Bay. She jumps at this chance and wonders what may come of it? She wants to write a second novel that will be successful. She meets Mirabel and Bill Jinx all are a bit unfriendly, but she does meet others who are much more friendly. She learns about the town‘a mystery and decides to write her book about it. Peter, Cass and Dandy find themselves fascinated with the Obelisk Mystery. As they start to investigate this mystery another member of the community dies. Dandy is not convinced that Mirabel‘s death was an accident. She wonders if these two mysterious deaths are connected. Will the three of them be able to work together to solve the mystery or get each in each other‘s way. Will the body count go up before it is solved? What a tale of greed, betrayal and guilt, rumors and blackmail. There are so many secrets being kept in this town. The was a great mystery and the plot twist at the end was magnificent. This is just kind of the book that reminds me how much I do love a good mystery!

This is my first book by this author, and I loved his style. The story blends humor and mystery with some twists. A really good read.
After several attempts to push through this book, I’ve come to the conclusion that it just isn’t for me. The story felt more YA than Adult, with characters that came across as overly naive. While the premise had potential, I struggled to connect with the writing style, which made it hard to stay engaged.
The mystery and treasure hunt elements didn’t feel as thrilling or exciting as I’d hoped, which only added to my disappointment. Unfortunately, this one just wasn’t a good fit for me.
