This a perfect gift book. It has great stories, recipes and activities. In my mind it’s a great turning point book. Would be perfect for a wedding gift or even as a housewarming gift. If you like (or know so,done who likes) homemaking and doing things by hand this is the book for you!
I received an ARC of this cookbook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a wonderful cookbook. Every recipe looks delicious!
A beautiful Amish cookbook.
With a glimpse into Amish life through food, this book has lovely photos, hearty recipes and conveys modern Amish life. I'm excited to try these recipes that seem achievable for the home cook.
Recommend.
This is a book integrating food and family into the gentle rhythms of Amish living. Most recipes make 12-20 servings with an entire section devoted to recipes for even larger groups and occasions. Beautiful photos of both ingredients and finished dishes are throughout the book, as are short essays on farming, children, and other aspects of life. There is much use of canned condensed soups and pre-made dressings. There is also a chapter for children in the kitchen, a welcome anomaly. While this cookbook is not for me I can see it becoming a cherished addition to the right person's library.
I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy to review.
"The Cherished Table" is a beautifully presented cookbook with great photos that truly capture the essence of the dishes. The images are vibrant and mouth-watering, making the book a visual delight. However, I do wish more of the recipes had accompanying photos. I find it helpful to see what the final dish should look like before I start cooking, and the lack of images for many recipes was a bit disappointing for me. This might be a personal preference, but I think it would enhance the overall user experience.
As for the recipes themselves, while they are well-written and easy to follow, I didn't find any that particularly stood out as unique or something I felt compelled to try immediately. The collection is solid, with a variety of dishes that cover different cuisines and meal types, but it lacks that wow factor that sets a cookbook apart.
Overall, "The Cherished Table" is a good addition to any kitchen library for its stunning photography and reliable recipes, but it may not offer the inspiration or uniqueness some home cooks are looking for.
This is a beautifully presented book of life, images and food that is at the heart of the Amish community. Many stories of the day to day activities, ways family works and worships together and combine with others in their community to create a larger, close knit family feel. This brought back memories of times spent in Amish communities in years past.
We love finding new cookbooks and this was a great discovery for us. My mom and I love the simple styles of cooking and the recipes that make you feel at home and those comfort meals. The Cherished Table is just what we were looking for. These amazing recipes from the Amish community. The book shows us things like canning, what to do for big gatherings and more. The photographs are brilliant and make us want to try every recipe in the book. We have already found our favorites that we tried. We love Cheesy Mashed Potatoes, Pumpkin Pie Squares and Strawberry Butter. We can’t wait to try every recipe. Each recipe is easy to follow and so simple to understand. Detailed for everything you might need to know on each recipe and mouth watering pictures as well. We highly recommend this book and we enjoyed this ARC and can’t wait to buy the book for our own library at home. I also know several people I want to gift the book to, they will love it.
I realy enjoyed this cook bookand look into Amish life. Lovina Eicher includes pictures of her family and activities evoking the chreisheing part of the table. She also chronicles the seasons and daily life with short essays and recipies. Recipies include normal "family" meals and recipies for feeding large gathering. This was an enjoyable cookbook.
Gorgeous photos that give a peek into Amish life. Most recipes look a little bland but it would be an interesting book to follow if you’re on a tighter budget. Flavor can easily be added but a lot of the food didn’t look especially enticing, even with a picture present.
A heartfelt look at Amish inspired cooking and traditions, The Cherished Table includes many rustic and accessible recipes that are thoughtfully presented. Each offering feels like a labor of love.
Anyone looking for a cookbook filled with simple doable recipes that most people will want to prepare, will want to pick up The Cherished Table: Recipes and Stories from an Amish Kitchen, by Amish cookbook author and columnist, Lovina Eicher. Amish cooks are famous for their simple, mouthwatering dishes, and this book is no exception. It’s filled with wonderful recipes that can easily be made and will be enjoyed by families. Not only are there good recipes for families, but also several excellent recipes for large crowds such as weddings and other gatherings.
The recipes are written in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed first, followed by step-by-step instructions. Most are fairly easy, so they are good for both beginning and advanced cooks.
While there are beautiful, professional photographs throughout, of some of the recipes and many of the lifestyle of the author and the Amish country, there aren’t photographs of every recipe, which is the only negative to the cookbook. It is, however such an excellent cookbook, that most will overlook that problem and embrace the fabulous recipes.
This cookbook is also a good read to curl up in the corner on a lazy afternoon. The prose is well-written and interesting. All told, this is a good choice to add to a personal cookbook collection.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
