This cute picture book tells the story of Squirrel and his friend Bird. Squirrel wakes up one day very confused because the grass is missing, it is covered with snow. Bird reassures Squirrel and together they enjoy the snow and ice, playing each day. Eventually the snow melts and Squirrel is sure it was a snow thief. The story features funny scenes and silly speech bubbles that children are sure to enjoy. The characters are entertaining and the questions asked are intentional and ones that children are likely to wonder about. At the end of the book there are some facts about winter and snow for children to discuss with the adults reading with them. I would recommend this book for children in the age 3-7 range. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book!

Book Review: The Snow Thief by Alice Hemming & Nicola Slater (illustrator)
Rating: 5 Stars
OMG, where do I even start with The Snow Thief? This book is an absolute gem, and I can't help but gush about it! Squirrel and Bird are back in this delightful winter tale, and let me tell you, it’s just as magical as I hoped it would be.
In this story, we find Squirrel experiencing snow for the very first time. His excitement is contagious, and I could practically feel his joy radiating off the pages. But just as he begins to embrace the frosty fun, the snow mysteriously disappears! Cue the intrigue—could there be a snow thief on the loose? The plot is simple yet captivating, making it a perfect read for kids who enjoy a little adventure mixed with winter wonder.
What really blew me away were the illustrations by Nicola Slater. They are so bright and vibrant that they practically leap off the page! Each illustration perfectly captures the magic of winter and enhances the storytelling in ways that words alone cannot. I can already picture kids poring over the pages, completely absorbed in Squirrel's forest adventure.
But what I love most about The Snow Thief is how it seamlessly blends entertainment with education. The author has thoughtfully included explanations of various seasonal changes and themes related to anxiety and adaptation, making it not just a fun read but also a learning experience for young readers. It’s a fantastic way to teach kids about change—both in nature and in their own lives.
Overall, The Snow Thief is poised to become a new fall classic. It’s charming, educational, and visually stunning. I can't recommend it enough for parents looking for a book that will not only entertain their kids but also help them understand the beauty of change. Grab a copy and get ready for some winter wonder!

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of The Snow Thief by Alice Hemming.
I was worried it wouldn't live up to The Leaf Thief, but I am happy to report that it is just as wonderful. Squirrel wakes up to the grass covered in snow. He is worried that someone took the grass.
At first squirrel doesn't want to go in the snow but soon learners the enjoyment of the snow. I love how the author points out things for first time snow/cold winter goers would have. Like seeing your breath, that you can slide on the ice and that snowflakes are all different shapes. She even explained things at the end of the book.
I will definitely purchase this book for our library.

Okay, this book is darling. Squirrel has the most chaotic energy and bird is so steady and practical. I think the illustrations are fun and engaging. My son found this book quite amusing and I could see it being a repeat read in our house!

We are BIG fans of this series of books and this one did not disappoint. My kids saw me reading it and immediately squished in next to me to find out what happens with squirrel.
All of the elements of the previous books were there and it is so fun to add another season to this series. We can't wait to add this one to our permanent collection.

This book was so fun. We follow Squirrel and Bird as they learn all about winter. This is the first time that Squirrel has ever seen snow, and he is loving it. He can’t wait to share it with his friend Bird. Just as they are enjoying the winter snow it starts to disappear and the friends are convinced there is a snow thief. Follow along as they discover all about winter, the changes of the season and the emotions we feel. The text is easy to follow along. The illustrations are bright and simple which really shows the excitement of winter on each page. Your family will love this book and learning. Enjoy the adventure together.

Such a cute follow-up to the Leaf Thief! I've already pre-ordered this, and can't wait to read it with my daughter during winter time. Such cute characters, beautiful illustrations, and a fun story about the change in seasons. 5 stars!

I loved every second of this book & can’t wait to buy it for my classroom. My students will want to read it over and over. The illustrations are beautiful, and squirrel’s curiosity and confusion are so funny. I know my students will laugh and smile when I read this for the first time. Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!

I loved this story. A squirrel wakes up to snow but isn’t familiar with it. Throughout the book he’s trying to figure out the white stuff and isn’t liking it, Man just how I feel about snow and winter. Then he wakes up in the morning and it’s gone. He then is trying to figure out who the snow thief is and we go on a journey with him. So cute and fun.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this sweet arc.

My two oldest boys really love the book "The Leaf Thief" so I was delighted to have the chance to read this one! It's clever and funny and it's a cute way to explain weather and the changing seasons!

Thank you, SOURCEBOOK kids and Netgalley, for this ARC of The Snow Thief, written by Alice Hemming and illustrated by Nicola Slater. I love the other books in this series, and when I saw this new book's cover, I knew I had to read it!
The Snow Thief is a cute story about a squirrel who starts out confused by the changed weather and why everything outside his home is white. Squirrel's friend, the bird, explains that it is wintertime and can be a fun time of the year. Throughout the story, Bird answers questions and tells Squirrel about all the different things related to snow, snowflakes, winter, the cold, ice, and more. (Reminds me of all the questions our kids and students ask regarding new and unknown topics and how they want to learn more about them!) When Squirrel wakes up the next morning, the snow has disappeared, and he is convinced a snow thief is real! What happens next? You will have to read and find out in September of 2024!
As stated in the description, this story is wonderful for classrooms and learning about changing seasons. I think this book answers many fun questions your students may be thinking and also provokes them to ask more about winter that may not be in this book. I love that the characters in the story make you think more about the unknown and all the cool things that can happen during this particular season. This story can lead to many wonderful discussions and allow you to jump into other winter themes, such as snowflakes, ice skating, ice, and more!
My students will be so excited to see this book; I cannot wait to read it to them this year! It will tie into our winter lessons perfectly! Thank you again!!

Those who know me know my love of squirrels now thank to another author, so I had to read this one. It’s so cute and I loved all the illustrations, the friendship, and the squirrel shenanigans. Thanks NetGalley and Sourcebooks Kids.

It’s winter and Squirrel is surprised by his first snow fall. Bird introduces him to all the fun and adventure of a snowy day. Except, soon the snow is all gone! Where did it go? Who stole it?
This is a sweet sequel to The Leaf Thief, with fun references to the changing seasons and fun snow day activities. I could absolutely see using this as a winter read aloud book. However, the tie in to The Leaf Thief feels like a stretch, particularly because it’s only made in the last few pages.

If like The Leaf Thief, adorable characters and a meticulous art style, you will surely like this book.
The Snow Thief is a great read for younger children (innocent, adorable silliness, innocence, openness and appreciation of life by the squirrel and the bird, and text is good for reading out loud.)
When it comes to the plot itself, I personally thought it would have improved a lot with 1-2 steps of escalation and reactions by the squirrel. I expected a lot from The Leaf Thief.
My 9yo child enjoyed reading this title out loud and gave it 4 stars.
In my opinion, this is a 3 star read, and I am eager to read the next book in the hope that its story will satisfy me more this time.

This is an adorable story about a squirrel who is confused about snow. At first, he's unsure about going out in the snow, but his bird friend tells him all about snow and shows all the fun that they can have playing in the snow. This was a fun read with great illustrations. One of my favorite parts was that after the story concluded, it had a few pages with information about snow. This would be a great book to read with kids at the beginning of winter! Loved it!

This is the absolute CUTEST book! The sweet story, the adorable illustrations, squirrel wearing mittens!! Cuteness overload!

Another cute story in the Squirrel and Bird series. Squirrel has never seen snow before so he counts on his friend Bird to teach him all the things you can do when it snows. He gets in to different situations and starts to like the snow but then when he wakes the next morning the snow is gone and he doesn't understand where it went. a cute story with really great illustrations.

The Snow Thief follows a squirrel and bird as they see snow come and go. This story has cute illustrations and good humor that children are bound to love.

Our favorite squirrel and bird duo are back! I love how the author is able teach kids about snow and the changing weather in a funny way. The panicking squirrel always makes us laugh. The sweet patient bird, always helping the silly squirrel. Can’t wait for this book to be released.
