I loved The Leaf Thief and this book is equally adorable! I loved the squirrel dressed in his bathrobe and then wondering if the smoke coming out of his mouth is because he ate a snowflake. In addition to being funny, this book is also informative, teaching about winter including snowflakes, freezing water etc. The illustrations are fantastic too. I would highly recommend this to all picture book lovers!
Since I first read "The Leaf Thief" I absolutely fell in love with Squirrel and Bird. The illustrations are gorgeous, and I love how the cutest little plots are digestable for little minds.
I can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy of this book so I can read it at story time!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Such a fun read! I can't wait to read it to my preschoolers this winter. The book has beautiful illustrations and I'm sure they will like it.
My son and I love these books! They make us laugh out loud. I've bought him the other books and we read them often. I look forward to the next one!
I received a free eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
We love the Leaf Thief, so this seemed like a good addition to our collection! Our friend Squirrel doesn’t understand why everything is white. And that sneaky snow squirrel stole all of his hazelnuts! This would be a cute one for winter-themed preschool storytime. There’s also a fun section at the end explaining all of the science behind how snowflakes all look different, and why you can see your breath.
Cute! The illustrations of this book were obviously very well-thought-out and it showed how much care the illustrator put into making the illustrations as fun and detailed as possible. On top of that, the colors were also perfectly appropriate for a kids' book, and they gave the book a playful tone. Bravo!
As for the story, I have no doubt that kids will have a blast reading this book and might even giggle out loud at some parts. It was also such a smart idea for the author to include explanations of different things mentioned in the story so that kids get both an entertaining story AND a learning experience. These explanations were tailored very nicely to fit the audience, and they made sense.
Really cute, clever, and fun book!
This is a great read-aloud book for winter! The Snow Thief has all of the humor that young readers love from The Leaf Thief, but this book explains weather changes that occur during the winter. This book can easily be used in the classroom to explore weather and science.
Aww haha this was an adorable story about a squirrel who is just discovering snow for the first time! The squirrel is first wary of the snow cause it’s cold and unknown. But a helpful bird teaches squirrel it can be fun!
Also loved how the author added fun facts all about the winter season at the end of the story. Not only is this adorable, great for children who love the snow, it’s also very educational!
I'm a huge fan of THE LEAF THIEF so was very excited to read this one as well! The beloved characters of Squirrel and Bird are back and are just as hilarious and heartwarming as I remembered them. This new story is equally as clever and I loved it! Highly recommend!
This squirrel is so stinking cute and I love his little red and white mittens! I loved the bright colorful illustrations. I really liked the questions asked and the concerns brought up in the book. In the end everything works out. I think this has what every kids book should have, simple words, easy to follow storyline, colorful illustrations. Thank you Netgalley and SOURCEBOOKS Kids for the opportunity to read and review this book. I enjoyed it.
The Snow Thief is such a cute follow-up to The Leaf Thief. I loved the squirrel's character and how he's confused about the snow -- how it comes and goes and who's "stealing" it, as well as the wise owl. This would be a great book to read to talk about changing seasons either in an elementary or public library. It would be an excellent choice for a read-aloud as all of the kids would laugh at the squirrel, his antics, his confusion, and make guesses. This would also be a fun start of winter gift particularly with fake snow that you could make appear and disappear. I definitely recommend this for any elementary aged kiddo!
Thank you NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS for allowing me to read and review this book before the publishing date! my own children and my classroom love the Leif Thief so I was so excited to see a new adventure!! The illustrations are beautiful! love the look of winter in the pages. Just the right amount of story. I can’t wait to get my hands on a hard copy! My children will be so excited too!
I received an electronic ARC from SOURCEBOOKS Kids through NetGalley.
Hemming bring us back to the woods to join Bird and Squirrel (The Leaf Thief) on new adventures. Squirrel can't figure out why the world turned white and where the green went. Bird patiently explains about snow and graciously answers all of Squirrel's questions. I appreciate how the friends explore together and enjoy their home. Plenty of humor for elementary level readers along with the opportunity to introduce some information about nature and science.
My preschool kids love The Leaf Thief so I was excited to get The Snow Thief as well! I read it to my own children at home and everyone enjoyed it, especially read with Squirrel and Bird having different fun voices. My four year old was giggling and even my eleven year old thought it was great. Kids get to learn some little facts about winter while enjoying a humorous story about Squirrel discovering snow for the first time. Short, fun, great illustrations, and captivating dialogue. Perfect for early childhood grades!
I read The Leaf Thief to my K-2 ELL students every year and I'm so excited that we have another adventure with Squirrel and Bird! I love the gentle scientific way the woodland friends explain to Squirrel about what is happening. I can't wait to add this to my classroom and use it to talk about winter and weather.
I read this to my first graders during the last week of school and they loved it! We love love loved the Leaf Thief and read it several times throughout the year. This book follows along the same premise but with a different season. This is the type of book that using your reader voice with your students goes a long way. I absolutely loved this book as a teacher. It gave entertainment for my students but my mind was already wrapping my brain around the lessons that I could do with this book. Alice Hemming writes incredible books that can be used across different subjects. My students love them and continue to ask for them even in the opposite season.
My class is a big fan of The Leaf Thief, so I was so excited to receive a copy of this new edition to the series!
It continues with the curiosity of Squirrel and gentle explaining of his woodland friends. It is silly to read out loud, but also a great way to begin introducing topics in science!
This particular book is centered around snow, as the name suggests. It was enjoyable for the reasons already stated, but I also would’ve liked to have another character or two. Squirrel spent the book repeatedly talking to Bird and it got a little repetitive. But it didn’t detract too much from the plot.
If you have kids that were fans of The Lead Thief, you may want to add this one to their collection too!
The illustrations in this book are so cute and full of character! The story is perfect for the winter. It's silly, adventurous and fun.
An excellent companion/follow-up to The Leaf Thief and Don't Touch That Flower! Squirrel is curious/anxiously wondering what is going on with the changing of seasons, the appearance of snow, and where his acorns have gone. A fun read for classrooms and libraries alike, recommended for ages 3+.
What a cute book! Squirrel is such a character and bird is there to teach him the ropes. In this installment squirrel learns about snow and other winter weather fun. Adorable banter between the 2 animals. And a bonus section that answers the why of squirrels questions. Definitely a fun and engaging books for your littles.
