First of all can we talk about the cover, I know we say don't judge a book by it's cover but it's something about this book cover I just love! It's so aesthetically pleasing and then from reading the book it adds more character to it also.
The narrator did an excellent job, she was so clear and engaging when it came to reading the story. I loved her voice.
This is a good horror looking into the social obsession with women always trying a new remedy to be young. It reminded me Rouge by Mona Award so if you liked that book you'll enjoy this too!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about this book but I stuck with it and became addicted. I finished it within a day. What a great story. And I’m excited it is part of a series too. I can’t wait to listen to the next book in the series as there was a sample of it at the end of this one.
Well written and thought out. Great character development.
Well done by the narrator as well.
The Nowhere Girls by Dana Perry is the first book of the Detective Nikki Cassidy series.
Detective Cassidy goes back to her hometown to meet with the person that murdered her little sister fifteen years ago. While in town everything comes crumbling down.
First off, I really enjoyed the story. It was a fast paced thriller. There were a lot of twists and turns. It really could have been a five star read, but the repetition was insane. So many things were just said over and over. A couple paragraphs are actually the same exact thing. I almost put it down several times but really the story saved it. I have the next one in the series and so hoping it’s not repetitive. Dana Perry can tell a great story but it was really hard to get past the repetition.
Detective Cassidy’s fiancé Greg, maybe the most unliked character, I’ve read about this year. She’s going through something so dramatic and all he can talk about is their wedding and his needs. I’m curious if anyone else wanted to punch him as much as I did. I didn’t care for the romance aspect at all(this or the other one)
I listened to some of the audiobook but ended up switching to an ebook version because I didn’t care for the narrator.
I rate it at 3.5 but rounded up to four cause it is a great story just don’t care for the writing.
Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for a chance to read an advance copy in exchange for a honest review.
The Nowhere Girls is the first book in a new crime thriller series that follows FBI Agent Nikki Cassidy. Agent Cassidy has a heartbreaking past, her sister was murdered when they were kids which influenced Nikki’s career path. Now, fifteen years later, on the anniversary of her sister’s death, another 12 year old girl goes missing in her hometown and Agent Cassidy must figure out if this is linked to her past.
I really enjoyed this audiobook and the story which is full of lies, secrets, and twists. I look forward to the next book in this series and finding out what Agent Cassidy investigates next.
Thank you @bookouture for allowing me to listen to this audiobook ahead of publication in exchange of an honest review.
A good small-town detective thriller! Nikki's sister was murdered 15 years ago and now another girl is missing. Nikki has returned to her hometown to talk to the killer in jail but soon is using her role as a detective to find the missing girl.
I like small town detective stories. There are secrets and drama from years ago but also someone you would least suspect is always the number one suspect!
It was entertaining , but just “okay” to me. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this in exchange for an honest review!
Wow, holy crap this audiobook was so compelling and captivating, once I started it I couldn’t stop listening!
Thank you so much for providing me with the ARC. This one is unfortunately a DNF for me, i wasn't a huge fan of the narration and it made it hard to stay in the book. I'll look for an e-book copy to give it a shot! Will not leave a goodreads review based on a DNF. Thank you again!
I liked this book, I will be listening to the next book in this series, The Last To Die. I will be recommending this book to be purchased at our library.
The Nowhere Girls kept me entertained and guessing until the very end. Nikki, an FBI investigator who specializes in crime against children, is thrown back into a case from 15 years earlier. The case of the kidnapping and murder of her twelve year old sister. It turns out the case wasn’t as simple as it first seemed, and Nikki faces threats and attempts on her life in order to find justice for her sisters and other nameless victims. There are a few surprises along the way, and one devastating“what-if” relating to Nikki’s love life. My two small issues with the book is that some of the story is repetitive, and the in-person scenes between Nikki and her fiancé are odd. The Nowhere Girls is the start of a new series, with Nikki as the lead. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy crime books.
I listened to the audio version, and the narrator did a good job of distinguishing between voices and gave the right amount of inflection.
I was pleasantly surprised with this book! I thought the cover was cool and the description made it sound like a thriller I’d enjoy but be similar to all of there thrillers I’ve read this year. Oh my gosh, I couldn’t be more wrong.. Starting in chapter one I was hooked. I feel like this series could be the next Tracey Crosswhite series. I loved the way we find out information at the same time as Nikki and how this story develops. I wouldn’t have ever guessed the ending! I’m so excited for book two!
The narration of this book was perfect. She brought this story to live and delivered this story exactly the way it was needed.
Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for the audio-arc of this book! I couldn’t put it down!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for advanced access to the audiobook, in exchange for an honest review. The narrator is Madeline Pell. She did a fantastic job. She was engaging and expressive.
The Nowhere Girls By Dana Perry is the first in the Detective Nikki Cassidy series. Nikki Cassidy is an FBI agent who has a sad past. Her sister was kidnapped and murdered 15 years ago. Each year Nikki goes to the prison to talk to the murderer to ask him why he did it. Every year he refuses to talk, until this year! The Nowhere Girls was full of twists and was fast paced.
I would definitely recommend this book to friends. Looking forward to checking out the other two books in the series, Available April 2nd!
This is a captivating crime thriller. The main character is an fbi agent who mysteriously lost her sister. Now she has the chance to see if she can find out what exactly happened. Entertaining and looking forward to more.
The Nowhere Girls written by Dana Perry and narrted by Madeline Pell is a gripping new thriller that is the first in the Detective Nikki Cassidy series
Right out of the gate, Madeline Pell is a fantastic narrator. This audiobbook was dynamic and engaging and the vocals were gold standard
The romance aspect was not my jam per se, but that is just a matter of taste because the main storyline was glorious and the characters dynamics enhanced an excellent storyline furhter, I just didn't gel with Nikki's partner's personality
The writing is brilliant, it is well structured and immersive. The pace is very well balanced in each change of scene and easily draws the reader along with it. Dana Perry's character development is intricate and I will be interested to see how Nikki Cassidy develops further
Thank you to Netgalley, Dreamscape Select, Bookouture, the author Dana Perry and narrator Madeline Pell for this compelling ALC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own
I absolutely loved this thriller.
Nikki Cassidy is an FBI agent. Her sister was murdered 15 years ago by a man now in prison. He has someone notify Nikki that he now wants to talk. She goes, finds it that he is dying, and he tells her he did not kill her sister.
Now, she vows to solve the murder and find a girl that just went missing.
Many thanks to Net Galley and Dreamscape Select for an audio ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
There’s a lot I liked about this, especially the whole mystery element, but also a fair amount that didn’t work for me.
What I liked:
Detective Nikki Casey is an unapologetically career-focused woman.
The mystery is clear at all times and unfolds believably.
The pacing is fantastic, I was never at all tempted to put this down.
I *had* to know how it ended.
We never got to know the sister and yet I was so invested in solving her mystery. That’s all we really want, right?
I couldn’t figure out the ending, even if I had ideas about the direction it’d take.
My complaints:
The romance element doesn’t work for me. She’s ranting about her sister’s murder and then her fiance is suddenly like ‘are you turned on like I’m turned on.’ Um… no??? Halp.
Speaking of, she gives literally 0 f*cks about her fiance. She describes him as a rich, good looking guy with no actual likable character traits and no explanation for why she likes him other than passable sex… and she doesn’t really like him. From his first mention it’s clear he’s at odds with her career and too traditional in his views to root for. He wants her to be the little lady at home, but she’s an FBI agent. So when she misses him 0% and immediately launches into a full fledged crush on a new guy, Billy, we’re not at all surprised. I just don’t get why she’s with the fiance?? Stop stringing him on, he’s right for someone.
The dialogue doesn’t read believably to me. It’s pretty expositional and formal (some of which can be explained by the protagonist being an FBI agent, but it serves to dehumanize a character who is already not particularly personable).
The way the agent thinks of herself is odd, too - she thinks like ‘became the woman I am today’ and the same wording is used by someone else later ‘became the woman you are today.’ Sure, she’s confident and has good reason to be, but OTOH isn’t adulting a little bit figuring it out as you go for everyone?
Some of the writing reads as boomeresque to me, like when she reconnects with an old high school classmate and says ‘I had no idea what to expect of you, you could have gained 50 pounds!’ like some weight gain would have fundamentally changed who her friend was as a person.
Still, this author can craft a compelling mystery so I’d read more from her… just preferably featuring a different protagonist.
Thanks, NetGalley and Bookouture, for the gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.
