So having never read Emma before, I went into this a bit blind. My first impression? Why is this human so insufferable? After talking to some of my classics-loving comrades, I learned that's part of the arc. Emma, or in this case Evan, must learn that he is in fact not the main character in everyone's story. He has to learn that his actions have consequences and in some cases, those consequences will change who he becomes. Honestly, this was hard for me to get into, but once I knew there was a redemption arc on the horizon, I was able to get through it.

A very cute retelling of Emma in modern day, where our 'Emma' is 'Evan.' Evan is a fairly popular influencer and leader of his high school's GSA. Evan loves the idea of romance, and can't help himself from setting up his friends. When a new girl shows up in his classes, Evan decides he must help this shy girl find love. With all the mischief of the original, misunderstands and secrets add to the messy drama of who likes who.

This was a really sweet graphic novel that I found just ok. I didn’t feel particularly connected to any of the characters and the story felt like it moved too quickly. The art was my favorite part of this graphic novel, it’s absolutely beautiful and so colorful

"Mismatched" is a very fun book that I think a lot of people would enjoy. My only big critique is that there are some jumps in the plot and relationship development that had the story been simplified a little bit could be smoothed out better. I liked the characters and I think anyone looking for a sweet high school coming of age story will like this book as well.

Super cute! I always love queer Jane Austen retellings (Fire Island is maybe my favorite romcom of this decade), so this was just what I was hoping for. I only wish the quality of the galley was better. It was pretty blurry, so I held out until the book released and put it on hold at the library, but my hold never came in, so I ended up just reading the egalley, and the image quality was so poor I couldn’t read any of the handwritten words.

This graphic novel is a Queer retellling of Emma. Admittedly, I’ve not read Emma and perhaps there are parts of the plot that would have resonated better if I was more famiiar with the context, There’s a large cast of characters in this book, which is something I tend to really enjoy! There’s just not enough time to fully develop the plot, though, and it seemed a bit rushed at times. I think readers will definitely enjoy this one, but I wish I could have seen more from most of the characters. Queer and graphic retellings will always have a special place in my heart. The art style was absolutelu phenomenal, and that’s just at the ARC level. Looking forward to flipping through a finished copy of this one!

I was so excited to dive into Mismatched! A modern, queer retelling of Emma in graphic novel form? Yes, please. The art style was gorgeous, and I loved the unapologetically queer vibes and all the messy drama. But… Evan. I know Emma is supposed to be kind of unlikable, but Evan took it to another level for me. I found it hard to root for him, which made it tough to really connect with the story.
That said, the Queens high school setting was fun, and I appreciated the fresh, diverse take on a classic. If you’re into chaotic characters and high school drama with a side of Insta-influencer antics, this might be your jam. For me, though, it just didn’t fully click.

cute queer graphic novel retelling of emma. the art is perfect -- so adorable! not a fan of the lettering, hopefully they sorted it out in the final version. main character is insufferable but kept reading for the beautiful, colorful art :)

This was very cute. I enjoyed the art a lot, as well. It was a very quick read. This is great for fans of Jane Austen and graphic novels.

Thank you to NetGalley & the publisher for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!
So sorry to all the Jane Austen lovers but I just did not like this graphic novel at all. The main character was completely insufferable and not even in an "I'm still rooting for them" situation. Quite honestly, I kept waiting for him to get put in his place and it just... never happened.
Not for me, but I'm happy for you if you enjoyed it. 1/5 Stars

Mismatched is an adorable, queer, modern retelling of Jane Austen's Emma. It's a great introduction for teens to a classic, and works well as a standalone too!

A really well done LGBTQIAP+ graphic novel retelling of Emma! The book follows the basic Emma plot line but brings it into the modern world while keeping many of the same themes. I particularly liked Evan's nonimmediate forgiveness of Luca, it felt much more real. I will definitely be recommending this to teens looking for graphic novel romances--and it makes it fun to pair with a recommendation of Emma!

I thought this was a very quick, cute MM romance, loosely influenced by Jane Austen's "Emma." Our protagonist is a huge gossip and very into drama, and unfortunately his meddling causes lots of confusion and hurt feelings. I loved the MM romance though; that was the highlight of the story, and I wish we got to see more interaction between the two before the end.

This is such a fun book! Lovely graphics and engaging layout. The characters had wit and charm and enough personality to really get a sense of who they are, their perspectives, and their feelings as they navigated the bumps that come along with being a queer young person in high school! Wish these graphic novels were available when I was a youth!

‘Emma’ has never been in my top Austen picks (and I actually studied Austen for a fair bit in college), but this reframing works wonderfully. Take out the high-stakes of high-society and how a Georgian-era match would determine the comfort level of the woman for life, and it just FEELS better to watch someone meddling. It’s not destitution vs. prosperity, it’s love vs. a couple years of loneliness. It’s high school.
Evan Horowitz is the head of the high school GSA, an aspiring beauty influencer…and a fairly successful matchmaker. He’s responsible for at least one marriage, and is looking to set up this year’s new It Couple. But Evan’s next OTP just isn’t OTPing, and suddenly his own personal relationships are crumbling. Can he fix his Match Made in Heaven…and perhaps win one of his own?
This is light hearted. Even when Evan messes up and he feels awful, it’s not a dive into deep depression. It’s most embarrassment, anger, and brief avoidance. The reader does not stop to cringe. The emotions are effective without being violent. Like I said, it’s high school. Perhaps if I was still a young adult, I’d view this a bit different, but from nearly the other side of the hill, while I enjoy seeing the characters making their matches, I’m also able to take their stumbles in stride.
The page composition is great. All rectangular panels, as far as I remember, but of a bunch of different sizes and combinations. It doesn’t get stale, and Zeferino uses the flexible sizing to set a great pace. The whole story moves snappily. And there’s always some sort of background, even if it’s a flat (but vibrant!) color, instead of buildings or foliage or crowds. Backgrounds are more used to set scenes, with flatter colors appearing once said scene is set, allowing the pacing to stay crisp.
My prediction? This is showing up in during the American Library Associations award ceremony in January. At the LEAST in the Stonewall awards, but also probably in a couple shortlists for other awards, as well. This is a must-have for any well-stocked YA section.

This was a very cute queer retelling of Emma, while Emma is one of my least favorite of Austen's works, I tend to enjoy adaptations of it and this was definitely one of the top retellings of it. I do think it cut off a little and thought it lacked a bit of the drama that Emma is known for and I didn't totally remember who was who in the side cast of characters, like I still have no idea who Ben and Tamar are. But overall this was a quick, cute read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

What a lovely graphic novel about love! I will be the first to admit, I don't know a whole lot about Emma, so I can't speak to it being a faithful retelling. However, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to love the characters and the story. Definitely a quick read that will keep you entertained.

Mismatched is a fun and quirky YA graphic novel. There is lots to love with this story. The characters are relatable and the illustrations fit the story perfectly. This is a must for all YA graphic novel collections.

While I didn't pick up too much on the Emma vibes, I did enjoy this fun graphic novel. Evan is the IT boy of his social scene: head of the alternate prom committee, president of the GSA, a make up social media account and some matchmaking skills. But when his matchmaking skills start to fizzle out... romance still abounds. I did like all the miscommunications. I loved all the lively and vibrant colors. If you love graphic novels and sweet high school romances, you'll love this novel.
What I loved most: the Brazilian vibes and language incorporation, I loved the representation of the GSA, the drama, the illustrations are beautiful

Mismatched is both adorable and fun. It’s a perfect story for anyone looking just for a good realistic fiction graphic novel. With adorable romance and themes of being true to yourself.
