Sweet and fun. Probably halfway between an Emma adaptation and a Clueless adaptation. (I do know that Clueless is already an Emma adaptation, I promise!) You definitely don't have to have read Emma to enjoy this book, but I do think you'll like it more if you have. Lots of queer joy and teenage awkwardness. The art is very cute.
A good read if: you also read as many adaptations of Jane Austen's Emma as you can get your hands on, you were president of your high school GSA, you are or have been a teen boy who loves makeup, you want a cute and extremely tame teen romance.
Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown for early access.

I’m a huge Austin fan and was eager to read Camlin’s spin on Emma. The layout, artwork, and color palette lay a solid foundation that is easy to follow and nicely supports the plot. The modernized adaptation cleverly incorporates a gender swap and social media. Sweet an relatable characters round out this exceptional graphic novel.

This was a really cute and well executed graphic novel Emma retelling featuring a gay ballerina slash influencer who loves to set up his friends. Great artwork and even better audio narration. This was an excellent gender swapped Clueless style YA story. HIGHLY recommended. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital and audio copy in exchange for my honest review!!

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed and lovable. The pacing was perfect and left you wanting to read more. I can't wait to read more by this author!

I love a retelling of a classic and this one did not disappointed. It brings a modern twist to a classic that makes it easier to understand and relate to. I think my patrons will definitely love this one.

I think this was a well done updated gender-bent retelling of Emma. I loved the social media influencer angle. I think this story is one that is so relatable to kids in grades 7-12. Relationships, crushes, figuring out who likes who, etc. can be so messy. The art panels were nice and easy to follow.

Mismatched was a very relatable, beautifully illustrated, sweet as sugar graphic novel that follows Evan through the woes of friendships and relationships in highschool. When Natalia moves to town, Even immediately befriends her and being the matchmaker he thinks he is….starts to look for potential partners for her. The story unfolds with numerous mismatches for both Evan and Natalia and perfectly encapsulates the difficulties of figuring out your feelings as a teenager.
At one point, I just had to stop and say EVERY SINGLE PERSON IS MESSY but then when I really thought about it….that is true high school experience. You can never figure out your feelings, as soon as you do, the other person either doesn’t feel the same way or reveals another side to themselves that isn’t likeable. Poor Evan and Natalia go through this many times but can always return to their friendship with is precious. This GN is jam packed with friends, family, and feelings!

This is a cute genderbent queer retelling of Emma that satisfies on all of those parts. I would have been super confused if I hadn't read Emma recently, though, as there are a lot of characters with little explanation of who they are (and only Evan's name is similar to the original name). A lot happens in a short amount of time. I loved the diversity. The illustration work is beautiful and works for keeping the story lighthearted.
Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for the opportunity to read and review.

Evan Horowitz is an Instagram influencer, an excellent matchmaker, and isn't afraid to be himself. He's gained a reputation for playing cupid with his fellow classmates, and so far, he hasn't missed. So when a new girl starts at the beginning of the school year, he's found a himself a new opportunity.
Evan quickly befriends Natalia, setting up the perfect relationship opportunities for her. But when Evan accidentally takes it too far, things start to get messy. And Evan starts to wonder--has he messed up his own chance at romance?
Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown Ink for an advanced copy of Mismatched by Anne Camlin to review! This is a queer retelling of Emma by Jane Austen, which is actually the second queer retelling of Emma I've seen in YA in the last year or so. I always wonder what brings certain things into popularity; though Austen always seems popular for retellings!
The story was pretty well executed, following most of the major plot points of Emma. Evan isn't the most likable character at the beginning, but part of his journey is learning how he affects other people. Especially those that he calls friends. He has a satisfying emotional journey throughout the book, even learning a bit of humility by the end. This was probably the best aspect of the book; that and the side characters. There's a colorful cast here, and they make the story entertaining to read.
At times, it is a bit difficult to actually follow what's going on, and I think that's partially due to the placement of panels throughout. The art style was cute and a bit simplistic, but it fit the overall tone of the writing. A bit of clarity in the layout, though, would have helped with the general flow of the book.
All in all, not a bad retelling! If you're an Austen fan, definitely pick this one up when it comes out in September.

A sweet updates queer take on a classic with modern twists and page turning drama. Perfect summer rom com.

Wow my heart is so soft reading this. Love the art style and of course a familiar story is a great companion for a summer day!

A fun Queer graphic novel retelling of Jane Austen's Emma. Blending social media, matchmaking, and a modern day high school in New York, Mismatched brings an old classic to the present day.
Thank you to Netgalley and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers | Little, Brown Ink for providing me with a review copy.

It's exactly what it says on the tin: it's Emma, but queer and illustrated, and super cute. The art style is great, the story is clear and fun and easy to follow, and it's just exactly what you'd expect.

An adorable lgbtq YA graphic novel interpretation of Emma. Give me a Jane Austen adaptation and I will always be in. Make it queer and in graphic novel form and I will be happy dancing. This story was familiar but fresh, comfortable but new, beloved and lovely. Would definitely recommended!

This was a super cute queer graphic novel! The colors were bright and vibrant and the story was sweet and fun!

This is a SUPER CUTE retelling of Emma! The illustration is gorgeous and I loved not only the representation we got but all of the positive messaging!!! Anything that encourages us to be ourselves i'm here for!
Thank you so much to Little, Brown Books for Young Readers for my ARC <3

Thank you, NetGalley and the publishers for an eARC of this book.
Mismatched is a super cute retelling of Emma. The artwork is adorable and full-color. The book is filled with positive messages about being true to yourself and not being afraid to explore your gender or sexuality, but most importantly to our MC Evan, how to be a better friend and nice to people. I could have used a "who's who" section because there are a lot of characters. Recommended to 8th and up.

A cute queer romance - I loved Evan's story, especially when he had those moments of self-reflection, and owned up to his mistakes. Evan is a ballet-dancing, social media guru who loves playing matchmaker. He is joyful and fun, and we get to see a popular queer kid enjoy high school (can we get more stories like that, please!) When a new girl, Natalia, comes to school, Evan makes it his mission to introduce her to new friends, get her settled in, and help her find romance. Through the many twists and turns, Evan finds himself making mistakes and discovering what it means to be a good friend.
This was a great graphic novel that should have been longer. There were several moments that felt rushed, to the point where the story struggled to keep up. An easy fix with additional moments to understand what is happening (with more explanations and exposition) would easily make this a 5-star read. Unfortunately it falls short - and I say that with the utmost regret, because there is so much potential for it to be amazing.

It's always hard to review an adaptation or retelling of Emma because Emma's character is meant to be insufferable and annoying, so of course Evan is too in this genderbent reimagining. I love the queer retelling of it and the art is lovely. This would be a great graphic novel to recommend for middle schoolers (and you can even use it to compare it to the original). I would say that the pacing is a little fast and I wish there was more room for character development.

this was very cute and I liked the little twist of the romance there was. I expected it to happen, but I was still very happy when it did. The art in this is also sooo cute and I appreciated the easy flow of the story. My main complaint is that the climax of the story sort of felt very abrupt. I felt like the MC's feelings were suddenly switched very randomly and with little buildup to the big reveal. I feel like with how well the rest of the story moved, this section was just a little jarring. But overall, I really enjoyed this. The MC is funny and dramatic and flawed, but learning how to be better and it was nice to see that. Super cute and easy romcom!
