I requested this to test how I felt about this graphic novel-ization of the Winx Club and unfortunately, my opinions of it have remained largely the same. For anyone being introduced to the Winx Club for the first time, this does make good introduction material. But as a long tome fan and lover of Winx (and the magical girl genre in general), I find that I'm just not a fan of the art style or the slightly new characterizations of the girls.
I think this graphic novel series is best suited for a younger audience and will do well with them; it's out of my range. 2/5 Stars
I have loved Winx Club since I was a little girl. It still hits the same and I have enjoyed this so much. I am going to recommend it to my friends for sure.
The modernization of dialogues is a big improvement - I love the use of italics and bold fonts to put emphasis on certain parts of the dialogue. The art style is a perfect blend between the earlier style and the look current comics have. The bright colours and illustrations add to the magic of Magix!
This volume gives us so much! Exactly how did Bloom come to Alfea, her inner feelings, team dynamics, boyfriends, and all the fights - between the girls, Winx vs. Trix, as well as Winx & Specialists vs. the monster!
Glad we get to see exactly how Stella discovered Bloom the initial refusal from her parents and their acceptance after the troll attack - because there was no way parents that strict would allow her to go attend school in an other dimension all of a sudden. No plot holes in this issue and all the questions people would have from the first issue will be answered in this.
The relationship between the girls are potrayed more realistically here, with minor fights, Blooms' insecurities creating rifts and them realizing the power of true friendship right on time! And the lesson in the end regarding apologies - many need to learn and understand that.
'The Swamp Monster' shows us that Bloom now has a part-time job! And gave us a scene with all of the girls transforming. The couples and their banter was so entertaining. There was more of Trix & the Specialists but I'm not complaining! Darcy is shown more humane here and the Darcy x Riven plot is interesting, maybe they have feelings for each other? At the same time, I feel bad for Musa.
Thanks NetGalley and Papercutz for this arc!
5/5 stars
A fun, quick, and nostalgic read about friendship, growing up, and magic! I used to love the Winx club when I was young and it was on tv, so this was a fun trip down memory lane
This gave me such a nostalgia feeling. I grew up watching winx club every week so it was so fun reading it. Perfect book for children
Quick and fun read. Beautiful art. There were three stories. We got some background on Bloom and more adventures. The power of friendship.
Kiko might be my favorite character lol.
I really liked the third story. It had a fun plot and some cute romantic moments.
I found it refreshing to try the Winx Club stories in this format.
The story feels a bit all over the place for now, more like short stories compared to chapters in a longer story.
The only issue I had was that the art style changed in the middle of the volume and it looked really weird.
This was so much fun! The illustrations are gorgeous and vivid and just what I was hoping for! These three short adventures were fun and would definitely appeal to the target audience! It's so awesome to see Winx Club again, this is definitely something that I can get behind!
As a Winxer since 2004, couldn't I avoid this book when I found out it was available? Reading again how it all started was magical as always. Winx are and will always be perfection to me.
Another Winx club book! those are so gorgeous, filled with classic-beautiful-style art (have I just made up a word for that?). The art is simple, yet gorgeous, cute, yet magical. It gives the same feel the books filled with that kind of gorgeous art did decades ago – as if you are embarking on a beautiful journey. And a beautiful journey the Winx books are indeed!
I’m glad Winx are being brought back to life in a modern form and kids now are able to enjoy Winx too!
This book leaves off from the first volume and continues the storytelling of the 5 Winx girls. I absolutely love this so much! The panels are the same as the original issues from 2004 and the new English translation is very simple to understand, yet very accurate and one of the best ones in the series franchise. It's a must-have for all Winx fans, whether you're a new fan or someone who's nostalgic for the past. I look forward to more releases! Thank you for providing me a free copy of the book for review purposes.
I was excited to venture back into a world filled with childhood memories. We continue on in the Winx Club’s journey as Bloom finds her place in Alfea and the Witches take on a more prominent role.
This volume contains three separate yet connected stories. We begin with a flashback of Bloom’s life with her parents and the aftermath of meeting Stella. It’s closely followed by a story showcasing Bloom feeling homesick and wrapping it all up with the Winx Club battling a monster. They build upon previous instances already mentioned, however it feels like small episodes that focus on one theme.
Given this is in a graphic novel format, I feel like it would have benefited from a more edited storyline. Currently the series is trying to closely follow the TV show while expanding on select events. However, there are too many characters and occurrences to fully enjoy them in this format. It becomes slightly confusing and inconsistent with awkward panel jumps and shifts.
That said, the artwork is sometimes inconsistent. Primarily the graphic novel looks similar to the TV show, however there are certain instances where it looks different and sometimes weird. It almost feels rushed. The placement of the dialogue boxes are at times confusing because they do not always follow the left to right, up to down order. Although this volume is much more scenic with a variety of colorful backgrounds throughout.
There are many characters in this series and although we can form an opinion of them it’s incomplete. It’ll help to watch the show to have a more accurate understanding of the characters. The graphic novel glosses over quite a bit of interactions between characters cutting conversations short. Since the series is primarily from Bloom’s perspective, we do have a much better understanding of her character. However, things are missed such as when was she able to transform and how did her relationship with Brandon become so close.
Overall, this is a nostalgic read but one that seems incomplete. I would have loved it, if it took the time to introduce the characters more thoroughly as well as their interactions. Also, I think the series would benefit from staying away from utilizing the one chapter equals one episode mindset. The story would have flowed better and the pacing would be measured throughout. Nevertheless, nostalgic reads are guilty reads and I’ll likely be continuing this series.
Its so nice to relive my childhood with these full color comics of winx. The stories are still so fun, gotta love those characters, and the overall nostalgia hits me so hard. Also i can absolutely imagine some younger kids finding out about winx this way, and i just love how its gonna be multigenerational.
Thank you to netgalley and the author for sending me the book in exchange for an honest review
I grew up watching Winx Club. I thought it was so cute and adorable. I love that it's coming back and this graphic novel is super cute as well.
I absolutely loved reading Vol. 2 of the newest Winx Club graphic novel: "Friends, Witches, and Monsters"! When I saw the cover on NetGalley I IMMEDIATELY had to request it! I was an absolute fan of the show and after reading this, I can say that I absolutely cannot wait for it's release in June 2024 and for all other upcoming volumes.
This volume includes 3 issues: "A Friend for Bloom", "Prisoner of the Dark", and "The Swamp Monster" . It picks up right after Vol. 1 and follows Bloom and the rest of the Winx Club fairies and Red Fountain boys as their new term starts at Alfea and Red Fountain. Readers will learn how Bloom came upon being a fairy and be taken on exciting magic filled adventures filled with witches and monsters. While some issues have similar scenes and story lines to some Winx Club episodes, there are a few issues (like "Prisoner of the Dark" and "The Swamp Monster") that's completely new.
I'd definitely recommend the newest Winx Club graphic novel series to any and all fans of the Winx Club shows or to anyone looking for a graphic novel that's full of magic, friendship, and girl power!
This edition is such a fun adaptation of the classic Winx Club comics stories! While the Papercutz team does take several liberties with the writing compared to the original printings, it's honestly a positive change as it provides something new for fans who have already read the original English editions of comics. I hope future editions feature more comics!
I enjoyed this edition much more than did volume one. It felt more like the familiar Winx Club ladies that I knew, and I enjoyed the new stories.
I did find it a little confusing that the stories linked to Vol 1, but in an odd order (the first story was before the first story in Vol 1, and the second Vol 2 story was after I think the third Vol 1 story) and this made things a little confusing. But overall I quite enjoyed it.
This was really cute! I feel the same way about this one as I felt about the first volume. Very easy to read, lots of whimsy and magic and fairies and witches and I just enjoyed it. I’m only giving it a four star review because it was lacking something that would make me extremely captivated by jt. It was cute and enjoyable but not an instant favorite.
I love the Winx club, and I really enjoy the comics and the nostalgia. Would read more of these volumes, especially if Riven actually got some focus and character development
This volume gives us a few more short stories that follow our Winx Club fairies. While I did enjoy my time reading it, it was starting to feel repetitive between the first volume and this one. There was a little back story with some which was nice. I like the stories but they're not really different enough sometimes to continue to hold my interest.
