O my goodness! This book is the cutest! I absolutely loved listening to the audiobook! There were times I was laughing, times when I crying and so many times when I did not want to stop listening! This upcoming release by Katherine Center will be available June 11th, and is one I absolutely recommend!
When Emma Wheeler, lands her dream dream job to rewrite a romcom script with her absolute favorite writer Charlie Yates, it seems too good to be true... Which unfortunately is kind of true… When she shows up she learns Charlie isn’t quite on the same page and is not looking for a writing partner. What follows is a hilarious and heartwarming adventure through love, laughter, and the unpredictability of life.
With laugh-out-loud moments and genuine emotion, this book is a refreshing tale and a clean wholesome read! 🩷 The Rom-Commers is most definitely a must-read for anyone craving a delightful escape into the world of rom-coms!
I just reviewed The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center. #NetGalley
Thank goodness for Katherine Center! Always an enjoyable story with interesting characters and not an ugly word or graphic moment in the whole book. It can be done well, yet it has become so rare that an author does it, so more and more love for Katherine Center. There is always a health/sickness aspect to her stories that I always find interesting. This was only the second Center book that I listened to rather than read a paper copy, and just like with the other one, it was a fun surprise to have a bonus chapter at the end and also that the audiobook includes the Author's Note (which note only makes me love KC more!)
Thank you to #NetGalley and #MacmillanAudio for my ARC audio of this book
This was a super cute read. I loved Emma and Charlie. Their banter was wonderful. This story made me laugh out loud. The way their relationship developed was so sweet and believable. I would definitely recommend this to all my friends.
Poor happy endings. They're so aggressively misunderstood.
Take a wildly successful screenwriter and one who is not quite so successful but who firmly believes in Happy Ever Afters, and you have the recipe for Katherine Center's wonderful new book. Center mixed them up with some of my favorite tropes (enemies to lovers, forced proximity, grumpy sunshine, and competency porn) and ended up with a story that completely delighted me. And made me laugh out loud.
Now I do need to admit that Katherine Center is one of my favorite authors. She believes in love, but it’s not a sappy sort of love. It’s complex and brave, sometimes quirky, and often unexpected. Her heroines speak to the reader as if we’re her oldest and dearest friends, and she can’t wait to give us all the details of her love story. And I love that.
I was thrilled to get to read an advanced copy of The Rom-Commers. And yes, I read it twice. But in between I rewatched "It Happened One Night" and reread The Bodyguard. Jack Stapleton (the MMC of The Bodyguard) is a secondary character here and I wanted to refresh my memory of him and his story. I love it when authors allow their characters to guest star in other books! I first encountered it years ago with Laurie Colwin and Mary Wesley. And I'm just as charmed now when it happens as I was then.
I'm something of a foodie (I ran a commercial kitchen for quite a few years) and have to admit to never hearing about donuts made with canned biscuits. I was never particularly interested in air fryers but now I'm contemplating a purchase...
As always, Patti Murin's narration was perfection.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advance copy of the audiobook. My opinions are my own.
I am shocked by the number of 4 and 5-star ratings for this book. The adorable rom-com moments are offset by a ton of tragedy and medical trauma that made the book difficult for me to finish. It NEEDS to come with a trigger warning list, the biggest of which is the TRAUMATIC DEATH OF A PARENT. Smaller triggers include car accidents, cancer diagnoses, and panic attacks. I understand that well-rounded characters need challenges to overcome, but this book had way too many for my liking.
The male lead, Charlie, was also really rude during the first half of the novel. He sees himself as the best of the best, and treats the female lead, Emma, like she is nothing because she has not had any commercial success with her writing. This attitude is incredibly ironic, considering he had writer's block for HALF A DECADE before meeting our female MC. His apology for his initial treatment of her is lukewarm at best, and the majority of Emma's attraction towards Charlie hinges on her self-identifying as his #1 fan.
Overall, I would not recommend this book unless you can get over a massive amount of personal tragedy and/or are a fan of insta-love. I am only giving this audiobook three stars for the narration. Patti Murin is excellent, and I would gladly listen to anything else she does.
Let me start off my review by saying that I had very low expectations for this one. Not because of the book itself, but because I read “The Bodyguard” by Katherine Center last year and did not enjoy it. So, I cannot express how pleased I am to have found that I did not have the same experience reading “The Rom-Commers.”
I am so in love with this book. Sometimes I just stare at the cover and think “wow, I miss reading this.” Because “The Rom-Commers” is such a joyful, hilarious journey. I don’t throw this term around often, but I can proudly say that Charlie Yates is officially a book boyfriend! He’s so sweet under his gruff exterior, and the fact that Emma is such a clutz just lets his sweetness shine through.
As for the narration, while I don’t love the Patti Murin’s voice for Charlie, I do think she is perfect for Emma.
I can proudly say that this is my favorite book of the year so far! And side note: the cover of this novel is so vibrant and charming, which perfectly matches the tone of the novel.
Thank you so much to Katherine Center, Macmillan Audio, and NetGalley for sending me a copy of the ALC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book!
I’ve been hearing so many good things about Katherine Center and I have been wanting to try her forever. When I saw the charming cover and title, The Rom-Commers, I knew the time was now.
The story and characters were rich and interesting. The plotting and pacing were perfect for me, lively but not rushed. The loving family and deep and long friendships were central to the story and gave a warm, comfortable vibe throughout.
This book made me laugh aloud multiple times and I cried hard at least once. I experienced a pleasant range of feels.
Great characters, complex relationships, full range of feels—five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book gets all of the beautiful stars because it is just that good. Katherine Center has such a way with words and stories, characters and emotions, and I just love it so much.
Charlie and Emma, what can I even say about them? They’re perfect. I loved that they were both screenwriters but from such different levels of success. I loved the traumas of their pasts and how they each attributed to their similar but also so different stories.
The side characters bring a lot of flavor and interest to this book (to include the guinea pig). There is banter, there is angst, there is tension, there is chemistry, there is love, and there is heartbreaking sadness and heartwarming connection.
There is so much and even though I knew Katherine would break my heart at some point in this book, because she somehow always does… she also knows how to perfectly put it back together. And she did.
I can’t recommend this enough. It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s silly, and it’s sweet. You’ll laugh and cry and then laugh and cry some more. Every giggle and tear was worth it!
This audiobook started slower than I’m used to KC books starting—but the necessity was quickly clear. I loved the set up, the information gaps, the dance of two traumatized people finding each other in commonalities and attraction. Also loved KC reading a bonus chapter with Charlie’s POV of a pivotal moment—and loved her author’s note soap box making a stand for romance and HEA and moments of joy in a world that is so tired and worn out. She can preach anytime, in and out of the chapters. Well done.
The audio vividly portrays all that Emma and Charlie go through. And I loved the setting in la-la land, as well as the absolutely unexpected events. Definitely a 5 star—feel good, romantic read. Keep it up, KC. I’m a fan!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this awesome early listen. You guys all get your preorders in!
Katherine Center easily falls within my top 5 writers and I eagerly anticipated the release of The Rom-Commers. I was approved for the audio version ARC and while I normally prefer my KC books to be read with my eyes, I adored the audio and narration on this one! The narrator did a fantastic job understanding the nuances and humor of KC’s writing style and interpreted it perfectly.
It was an enjoyable listen but not my favorite from Center. A good bit of the book seemed to drag longer than necessary and even with the ending, she basically says “the end” but then keeps going for another 30 minutes.
There chemistry between the two main characters felt a little lacking and it could be that I just didn’t feel connected to them all that much.
It was a thorough, enjoyable journey and I would still recommend as a read this summer!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to receive and review this ARC.
This is an adorable romcom with a very likeable female lead, Emma. Charlie is a fun character as well. I really liked the narrator's voices, they fit the characters perfectly. This Katherine Center story has very similar vibes to a Christina Lauren romcom. I'm really going to have to try and make donuts out of canned biscuits. Why you ask? Well, you'll just have to read this one to find out.
▪️forced proximity
▪️screen writer romance
▪️icon x fan
▪️banter banter banter
Center never misses - especially with her amazing audiobooks! i love the way she can tell a beautiful story and gives us all the banter. this one comes out in June so definitely keep your eyes peeled! with LA’s background, these two grumpy x sunshine lovelies made this book so fun and enjoyable
I LOVED this one!! Emma and Charlie were so cute together. I tried getting the ebook ARC of this, but it was left pending for a while so when I saw the audioARC I jumped at it. I listened to it over 2 days and couldn't stop. Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC!!
This story follows Emma who has spent the last 10 years caring for her dad after a tragic accident. Emma always wanted to be a screenwriter, but it has taken a back burner to taking care of her family. She makes ends meet by teaching at the community college and submitting pieces to her friend who is a big agent in LA. When that friend calls for her to ghostwrite with her favorite Hollywood screenwriter, Charlie Yates, Emma is tentative to leave, but her family pushes her to take the chance. Except when Emma gets to LA, Charlie proves to be more of a challenge. As Emma and Charlie work together their chemistry really shines, but will they get their happy ending? After all, Emma believes in them and Charlie doesn't.
"The Rom-Commers" might just be my favorite Katherine Center novel. Center's last book wasn't my favorite, but this one is back on track for me. The last few books I have listened instead of a physical read because the narrator has been the wonderful, Patti Murin. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite audiobook narrators. Her emotion and comedic timing is top notch. She also is great at voices. Her male voice doesn't even sound like her, it's pretty immersive. There was a section that you can tell Murin had a cold because it was nasally, but it kind of fit because the character was going through a rough patch so once I adjusted to it it went with the character being tired.
Emma Wheeler is a romantic comedy screenwriter looking for her big break. That dream often has to take the backseat as she is also the full-time caregiver for her father. When her agent offers her the chance to write with Charlie Yates, Emma’s favorite screenwriter, she is excited, but hesitant. Emma’s younger sister offers to help with their father’s care so that Emma can pursue the opportunity. Hilarity and romantic comedy cuteness ensues as Emma and Charlie attempt to work together.
Katherine Center has another winner on her hands! I really enjoyed this story and the banter between characters. The story was quick-paced and refreshing while also giving a glimpse into the main characters’ pasts. Emma and Charlie were very likeable and I loved how their story progressed.
Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for an ALC of this title in exchange for my honest review
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan audit for this audiobook
Let me just tell you something. Katherine Center’s books are like warm hugs. They are sweet and adorable and so full of heart. They give you the feeling of watching your favorite rom com. Nothing can beat that.
This one was just so cute. I liked Charlie, with imperfections and Emma with her fear of living her life fully. Everything about this book was just real, I don’t even know how to put in the words.
All I’m gonna say is just go, read and hug your person if you got one
I say this every time I read one of Katherine Center's books: This is the best one yet. I loved the quirky characters and the plots of her books. This story about two screen writers coming together to write a rom-com will stay with you. I love Emma and Charlie(it took until the end almost!). 10 stars hands down. Loved the voice of the narrator.
Oh my gosh this was the rom-com of my dreams! Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this audio ARC. I wasn't even 10% into this book when I knew I'd be hooked. I absolutely love Emma's sunshine personality and Charlie's grumpy but caring attitude. Both characters suffer from anxiety which was great to see represented in a book as well.
Emma gets the chance of a lifetime to go to LA and write re-write a Rom-Com with a screenwriter that's she's LOVED for years. Emma has spent the last decade taking care of her dad who suffered a traumatic injury never really getting to live her own life. While Charlie has been good at pushing people away ever since he was diagnosed with cancer. Emma is driven to prove to Charlie that rom-coms deserve their space in the limelight and that love does exist. This was laugh out loud funny with the angst of will they won't they plus tears at the end. If you love Abby Jiminez or Emily Henry this is perfect for you. I highly recommend! 5 stars!
This might possibly be my favorite book by Katherine Center. A woman whose life has been marred by tragedy and obligation who longs to be a screenwriter finally catches her big break, but it means leaving behind all she holds dear. I loved the slow burn romance and the perspectives of both MCs as they navigated their feelings. And I especially loved the little bonus read by Katherine herself at the end of the book which retold a key scene from Charlie's POV. I would definitely recommend this book to all readers.
However, I must add one caveat. While I have read this author extensively, this is the first Katherine Center book I have listened to and as she always uses the same narrator, it will be the last. I did not love hearing all of the breaths the narrator took, although when she was speaking, she did a fantastic job.
Initial Thoughts
I am convinced that everything Katherine Center touches turns to gold because this was another fantastic book by an author I have grown to adore. I quickly fell for these characters and couldn't wait to see how things would work out between them. Emma and Charlie were perfectly matched and made a great team. I listened to the audiobook and the excellent narration helped to bring this story to life.
I received a review copy of this book from the publisher. Full review to be posted closer to the publication date.
Thank you NetGalley for the audiobook ARC of The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center.
I love, love, love this book. It deals with families, loss, friendships, connections, romance, finding yourself, overcoming fears, cancer, and happiness. This book will make you laugh, make your chest tighten, root for the underdog, your eyes will moisten, you will get mad...it has all the feels.
I don't want to spoil the book for you. Just know that you should read it. This is now my favorite Katherine Center books. I am so thankful and blessed to have been able to get a sneak peek of the book. I hope she never stops writing rom-coms. We need them in the world.
