This debut collection of short stories is about how we say goodbye to the things we love. In turn deeply emotional and darkly funny, what stands out the most is how much Mary Jones can pack into a sentence. The stories are short, only a few pages in most cases, and compulsively readable. I found myself turning the pages saying, ok, just one more story, just one more. One more.
This collection is a gorgeously written gem. If you’re a lover of short stories, you must check this one out!
Thank you to @zibbybookspublishing and @netgalley for the advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
This unfortunately JUST missed the mark with me. I felt like whilst I could tell what the aim was, the lack of contentment or warmth in this made the sadness and all other emotions feel like they were forced, or unreal.
thank you to netgalley & zibby books for this #arc!
a debut collection of short stories all about goodbyes — to relationships, to time, to ourselves. although it’s a super breezy read, it isn’t light in its emotional impact. a few stories had me feeling intense emotions.
jones is great at writing from a variety of perspectives, but making all of her characters accounts feel very firsthand & real!
even though no story is connected or correlated, and there’s a lot of variation, jones has an effortless flow. it keeps you hooked — but the brevity of the vignettes can feel almost too abrupt. there were a few stories that fell flat because they didn’t wrap up as coherently as some of the other ones.
the jump from story to story could use a little more clarity, because the change in voice/perspective is jarring & a little confusing at points!
overall a very bittersweet, but easy read, that’s perfect for short story lovers or those who enjoy themes of grief/moving on/etc!
Hold onto your hearts with this short story collection: The Goodbye Process by Mary Jones This is a book about goodbyes: to seasons of life, to relationships, to earlier versions of ourselves and much, much more. Raw and real, honest and deep and sometimes even darkly funny, this book will make you feel all the feels, right from the shocker of the first story. As a bookologist, it’s the perfect collection of stories to have in my bookish toolbox to share with clients looking for the perfect story to grow through what they’re going through.
"The Goodbye Process" by Mary Jones was a memorable read that deeply resonated with my younger self. It eloquently addresses the poignant reality that sometimes, we just have to accept things as they are and learn to let go of what we cannot control.
While the book was light and easy to read, it was also heavy in terms of internal reflection. It invites you to ponder and reflect, which is something I found truly beautiful. Overall, I'm grateful for the review copy from NetGalley. Thank you!
I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of short stories that though different, were woven beautifully together. Jones showcases her creativity in the various stories. I was very impressed by her knowledge and her way of presenting experiences to the reader that felt very firsthand. I felt emotional reading about the heartbreak and loss of some, as well as scared and angry while reading other stories. I flew through the book!
Thank you to Zibby books for the review copy of The Goodbye Process, this is an impressive collection of essays that stand alone and yet complement each other powerfully. What I think about the most as I step back is how connected the stories made me feel, Jones has a powerful way of not just writing an essay but of creating a feeling, a mood, and a sense of understanding and empathy with her work. Reading the essays was an compelling and unexpected treat, I look forward to knowing more about this writer in terms of process, topic, and development of themes.
The writing in these stories has a really good flow, and the vignettes are quite varied such that pretty much everyone will find several relatable to some degree. An interesting and generally gripping read. If I had to mention a gripe, I'd say that the transition between one story and the next can sometimes feel abrupt so that the change in voice (first person to third, for example) can be strange at points.
A lot of these stories hit close to him for me. I was drawn by the cover enjoyed having a different story to read every day. It brought insight and different emotions with each one. Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the earc and I’m excited to own a physical copy to re-read and highlight.
I really love this book and thought all the stories were so well done and engaging. Zibby Books is my favorite new press!

"The Goodbye Process" is a gem of a book. The stories are unique and unsettling, they turn in surprising directions and resonate after you've finished reading. I was intrigued by the description that each character in the stories is facing an ending. It is a worthy topic when explored by a gifted writer. Highly recommended. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. #TheGoodbyeProcess
