An excellent mix of paranormal, urban fantasy, and thriller. A story that kept me hooked and reading. Well plotted, intriguing, and highly entertaining
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
The cover intrigued me and that was the main reason i wanted to find out about this book and the writing.
I am usually not a fan of Mythology and folklore but after reading this book i definitely will read more of that troupe. The twists in the book really grabs you from page 1 just fantastic.
Sometimes the writing got confusing but for the most part was a great read.
Thanks NetGalley for letting me read and review.
The very long wait for the audiobook was SO worth it [and I HIGHLY recommend the narration - it was just magical], and I was so glad to finally dive into this highly anticipated [by me] read.
I remember reading "The Stolen Child" [ergh, so many years ago now] and just falling in love with Mr. Donohue's writing [I was given that book by a friend who had read it and didn't get it and she wanted me to feel the same way. Oops. I don't think she was happy that I LOVED it and talked about it for D A Y S. ;-) ]; reading this book, filled with magic, mysticism, folklore, and some seriously twisted humor [I spent so much of this book just laughing at some of the dry, droll humor that is just my style] along with the gorgeous setting of Ireland, just increased my love of the authors writing and his ability to tell an amazing story [that you know is NOT read, but you kind of wish it could be], and reminded me why I was so excited to read this book in the first place. It was just fantastic.
What a great way to pass some very snowy days!!
Thank you to NetGalley, Keith Donohue, and Crooked Lane Books for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was really intrigued by this book when I read the description. I love mythology and folklore and know nothing about Irish lore. I really liked the twist that occurred about a quarter of the way through the book. Totally unexpected and grabbed my attention. Unfortunately about three quarters of the way through, I found myself losing interest. The book is well written and I liked the over all story but I think some of the characters threw me off a bit.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher!
Ancient heroes from Irish mythology clash in the modern world when a body is found in the local bog by two unassuming local townspeople. This body-a girl who was killed and placed in the bog thousands of years ago-sets a whirlwind in motion, mixing the modern characters with their ancient counterparts in a battle for the ages.
A great mix of thriller and folklore. You know I butchered those names, but I tried!
**Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the eARC of this haunting title!**
While I found this book to have vision, I couldn't connect with the voice behind this story. I will give props where they are due and say that I really enjoyed the setting and that Donohue can absolutely paint a vivid picture.
Unfortunately the pacing in this one didn't inspire me to get sucked into the story and I found myself struggling to come back to this book. I think fans of Irish Folklore and historical fiction will connect with this one a bit more than the average horror reader.
Overall, I would definitely try this author out again and I'm glad I gave The Girl In The Bog a try. The story itself is very unique and I appreciated the insight into Irish lore.
I love Irish Fairytales. This book does a great job of explaining how they would fit into a modern society. Its gritty, clever and a read you don't want to miss.
I usually share much more detailed thoughts and feelings about books I read in order to review, but I can’t do that this time unfortunately. I enjoyed the writing style but am still so confused about the plot and how one timeframe moved to another that I can’t even give a brief synopsis. I feel this book would be much better for someone else so I won’t call it bad in any way, it just wasn’t for me and I won’t be making any posts on my socials because I don’t feel it would be fair to the author.
This was supposed to be a dark mythology retelling according to the blurb, but the voice of the main character was lighter and more humorous than I had expected. That kind of killed the vibe for me and I just couldn't get into the book.
Lyrical story rich in imagery and mythology that felt like a fantasy at times and like a mystery at others. It has been several years since I've read Keith Donohue, but I remember previous reads being more straight-forward mystery reads, but I really enjoyed the writing style of this one and the beauty of the tale as it wrapped the reader up in an ancient world, breathing in new life and bringing forth The Girl in the Bog.
This was really well-written, and really compelling. I loved the dark atmosphere, and how weird the story was. While I wasn't completely blown away by the story, I did think that it was interesting and the plot/characters kept me compelled to keep reading all the way through to the end.
This book was gripping and hard to put down. It didn't feel like everything else you see out there, it felt very fresh. I really enjoyed this book!
Dark, intriguing, & well-written. Took a chance out of my normal reads. Just not for me. Don't let that discourage you.
This book is an enjoyably weird story to sink into. I had a harder time getting in to the book at first but ended up enjoying it once I was able to!
Atmospheric, dark, and intriguing, [book:The Girl in the Bog|201632448] was a unique and interesting book which blends folklore, fantasy, mystery, mythology, and thrilling elements.
A farmer has unearthed a girl in the bog. She was placed there two thousand years ago and has been preserved by the peat for all that time. She might be buried in the bog, but she has awareness and has been able to witness the passage of time. The farmer wants to protect his find but tells a friend...
This book then delves into the past and the word building, and characters are interesting and unique. There will be predictions, power struggles, murder, and the story of how the bog girl and how she came to be in the bog.
Readers will also learn, if they didn't already know, about the real bog bodies which have been preserved by the peat in the bogs. I was not aware of the bog bodies and who peat acted as a natural preserver and found myself looking up more information regarding bog people while reading this book.
While I enjoyed this book, it did not wow me in the ways that I had hoped. I did enjoy the characters but sadly, this book missed the mark for me. I did enjoy the author's wonderful writing, originality, and vivid descriptions. Keith Donohue first came on my radar when I read [book:The Stolen Child|38657] and thoroughly enjoyed it. I do look forward to reading more of his books in the future.

DNF around 50%. I never really could connect with this story. I got so far because the book does flow well. It’s easy to sink into. At 50% though I wasn’t feeling like much had happened and wasn’t really feeling much about any part of the story.

I admit to having found this one a bit of a challenge-there are witches, warriors, and a prophet come to life from a bog body-but on balance, it's a rollicking bit of entertainment. Fedelm, the bog body, is the subject of much attention from the people of her past, all of whom upset the proverbial apple cart for Irish farmer Michael Mullaney and his family. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A good read,
The wit and humor of the Irish is on display, as is its mysterious and ancient history. A wonderful fantasy-thriller and a gorgeous homage to Ireland.

The Girl in the Bog by Keith Donohue is a brilliant read, so much so that the book is on my "to buy" list. I am a huge fan of Neil Gaiman and Tom Holt and as such, this was right up my street!
Imagine if you will, an Irish version of California Man (Encino Man for our American chums) but with a young woman, unearthed after 2000 years in a peat bog, in the fields of Connemara, but instead of high school hi-jinks, she goes on the lam with the help of a trio of pagan witches.
The chaasers include an American archaeologist, Irish farmers, fairies out for a jaunt an reams of references to Irelands rich folklore. Read it, you will love it!
Thank you to NetGalley, Crooked Lane Books and the author Keith Donohue for this ARC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own
I couldn't get into this, I think it was just me though. There is a great premise, a cool backstory . It may be that I have always done the audio version of Donohue's books.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
