This was an absolutely a cozy cute read and easy to get sucked into the story. Callum is a mortician who enjoys staying inside and by himself as he is extremely introverted. Then a new neighbor comes to live next door, Lark, and she is the complete opposite from Callum. She is a force that works her way into Callum's life and gets him to open up in ways he never thought. The story line of having Callum needing a bride to save his business and Lark is there to help him. Meanwhile, Lark is dealing with her own issues with the new job she is managing and Callum wants to protect her from any issues. The characters are well defined and the slow sexual buildup was just right. While some parts were a little "cheesy" for me, I overall enjoyed this book a lot. I was disappointed when it was over and look forward to seeing what this author does next!
Thank you NetGalley and Lassen Press for an ARC edition in return for an honest review.
I got an ARC from netgalley of this for the re-release that is happening in August which was so exciting because it had been on my tbr as an indie read as well so I was ready to get into it. I thought that Callum was adorable sweet and shy, I loved what getting to know Lark brought out in him. Lark was such a fun FMC and I loved watching her find joy in life again. I think the grief journey was done well, my heart bled for Lark. I think that the resolution with Rachel coming before Callum and Lark reconciled would have made more sense in my head however I am just glad that we got to see that happen because it was important to Lark's growth. I enjoyed this couple and their growth individually and as a couple. Watching Lark think she wasn't good enough for Callum hurt, but seeing them happy together was worth it. Callum's birthday surprise was adorable I loved it so much!
An adorable romance with the "opposites attract trope" and a male main character that is to die for.
How do you find love after hurt? How do you date casually when you need connection for attraction? How do you manage your emotions when you pick up and run from your problems?
Morbidly yours is a refreshing romance trope book that reminded me that the best laid plans can go to shit, and that's okay because love is on its own timeline.
Also the spicy scenes are EVERYTHING!
Very cute, a sweet addition to my summer reading list.
Thank you NetGalley, and Ivy Fairbank for this ARC in exchange for an honest review :)
Morbidly Yours is about Callum and Lark. Callum is a man who wants to inherit his family’s undertaking business but to do that he must meet one condition: marry before his 35th birthday. Lark is having to stay, reluctantly next door to a funeral home during her stay in Galway, Ireland. The American cartoonist and animator came here to not be reminded of her dead husband. Once Lark finds out about Callum’s predicament she signs herself up to help the introverted mortician. As the dating project progresses and their friendship grows so does their attraction.
Morbidly Yours is a dark humoured, fun romcom. I really enjoyed the writing style. I’ve been on a horror kick for the summer, but this little rom com definitely broke that cycle. I loved this. Callum has a stutter, and I found the execution to be very respectful and well done, it was nice to see that represented. Lark is a widow, and I found her arc of not moving on but growing and coming to terms that you can love both very heartfelt and warming and fuzzy.
Callum dirty talks in Irish ;) which was a very nice bonus and touch. It definitely flowed and was kinda hot. It is a dual POV romcom, so that’s a bonus as well. I loved seeing both sides, which has very much become a standard normal for books like this.
Did I stay up until 5 am just to make sure I could finish this book? Yes, yes I did. I was so engrossed in this story. I absolutely loved the slow burn of the MC and LI. Their awkward tension and the LI's obsession with our MC had me SWOONING! My own morbid little heartfelt SEEN by this couple and it's true - opposites attract. Don't let the funeral home and grief dissuade you... pick up this book immediately if you need a sweet, funny, romance with a slow burn that'll have you screaming, JUST KISS ALREADY!
This was so great and sweet, especially for a debut novel! Both characters were real and complex and the problems they faced were treated with care. The first two thirds of the story had a great amount of relationship and character development, but the last third was a little rushed and significantly less well crafted. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review :)
-SLOW burn
-Love after loss
-Angst through and through
-Contemporary romance
I didn't know if I was going to enjoy this one but I absolutely did!!! I could not put this one down and the execution of plot development and characters was beautifully written I have to admit!! I enjoyed every minute of the characters coming along, to meeting and everything in between!!
Thank you NetGalley, Putnam Social, and Ivy Fairbanks for the opportunity to review the eARC of Morbidly Yours.
Morbidly Yours was absolutely adorable and comedic gold! I found myself laughing out loud and swooning so many times, which tells me this is an author who might become an insta-buy for me going forward!
I love how realistic the story was and the REPRESENTATION was A+ here. So many times authors try and fall short, but Ivy does it right every single time. That along with the cute as Hell MMC and FMC was just chef's kiss.
Not wanting to give too much away, there IS one last thing I want to mention that may sell this for you ... Irish dirty talk. Heh.
I was expecting to love this book as much as I did! I was obsessed with the main character Cal and how dorky and shy he was. I immediately loved their chemistry and banter in this book. One of my top reads of the year!
4 stars
I loved this story so much! Heck, I'm currently pricing airfare to Galway for the Christmas markets. I loved the inclusion of not only Irish dialogue but also the Irish translation guide. And, the translations of intimate activities were a lot of fun. Callum was such a tender, sensitive character. Sometimes, I wanted to shake Lark and push her to move on with her life. And, Sean was one of the slimiest characters I've come across in a long time!
However, I felt like it got bogged down in figurative language. Sometimes, less is more. And, it was a little more spicy than what I prefer. That's a me issue, not an issue with the book itself. Also, the behind-the-scenes of the funeral industry was not my cuppa, but I was warned at the beginning, wasn't I! lol
Thank you to Penguin Group Putnam for the invitation to read this title, and to NetGalley for providing the digital ARC in return for an honest review.
Hilarious and adorable.
This book surprised me in how much I enjoyed reading it. I went in expecting it to be more morbid? than it was. Instead I found a literal laugh out loud love story that pulled me in and kept me turning (ebook) pages. I loved the relationship between the characters and the way that the story grew the relationship while also honoring the grief that they were each feeling, and the complexity of that grief, and the complexity of what life looks like after loss, too.
Now off to find someone to speak dirty to me in an Irish accent.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read an early copy of Morbidly Yours.
This book is an emotional love story. Lark moves to Ireland and unbeknownst to her moves next door to a funeral home. Where Callum is the mortician In order to keep his family’s funeral home, he must get married within 6 months as per the will. I did enjoy this friends to lovers book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this in exchange for a review!
This was a beautiful story. From page one, it felt like something that could happen in real life. Lark's journey through death and grief felt almost too realistic for me sometimes as I just experienced a loss myself. My only complaint is that I felt some chapters ended too abruptly, and I would have rather had t0 more pages of material to read than have these chapters cut short. But I'm so glad I got to read this, and it is worth every moment.
This was a cute book and I enjoyed it. At times, the accents and the choices made to highlight the characters' nationalities and identities seemed more researched than real, such as the Texas idioms and the mention of her favorite cowboy boots about 3/4 of the way through the book, but I enjoyed other little details from the story. I would particularly love to see the movies Lark worked on! Overall, a fun, relaxing read for summer.
This book has…
- 30+ age MMC and FMC
- found family
- MMC that is introverted & demisexual - did I also mention he’s tall, dark haired, wears glasses and dresses like he belong on Peaky Blinders? He also has a stutter (yay for disability rep!), and he falls first!
- FMC is a Dolly Parton loving, very perky, Texas raised Widow.
- excellent 🌶️🌶️ (Did I mention the Irish dirty talk?)
- friends to lovers & opposites attract
What I loved…
This book had me giggling and kicking my feet! I absolutely adored the relationship between our MMC and FMC. The concept was so very adorable and I loved our MMC. I loved seeing the stutter representation and instantly connected with our MMC bc of it. I’ve read other books with this (stutter or speech disorder) representation where it felt like the character’s stutter was added to advance the plot and not as a way to represent a community. Ivy Fairbanks however did a wonderful job representing the community and including meaningful representation in the process. I also think she handled grief well throughout the novel.
What didn’t work for me - but might work for you…
I personally did not connect with the FMC at all. I loved the interactions between our MMC and FMC but when either one of them were alone I had a hard time being interested in the plot. That said, it is possible this is a me problem, not a book problem. Those who have felt the loss of family or have better empathetic ability toward loss may find it easy to connect with the main characters.
In the end I am rounding up to 4⭐️ bc I do think this is an good book and could be a perfect book for the right individual, even if it wasn't the right book for me personally.
I liked the ending of this book. The meeting between Lark and Rachel tied things up nicely.
Lark and Callum’s chemistry was really written well. The friendship they developed was sweet to read.
The book was slow to start and really took a long time to get going. The work drama with Lark and Sean annoyed me. At the end, Lark stands up for herself. I don’t think how Lark was handling the work issues with Sean did her character justice. She was so strong in other aspects of the book that it was painful to see her not stand up for herself until the end.
I love this book. I loved it when it was published independently. And I am so excited about the tweaks and that more people are likely to read it. It’s the story of a widow who ran away to Galway to heal and the demisexual funeral director who is awkward but it also the perfect person for her. Seriously the two main characters are great and well written. The secondary characters are interesting and funny. The thing keeping them a part makes sense. So heartfelt. Also super sexy. Like yea steam! This book is quirky and delightful. I can’t wait for Ivy Fairbanks next one.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I adored this! Lark is trying to start anew. In the last few years, she lost her husband, best friend, and her dream job. She finds a job in Galway at an animation studio and is looking forward to starting fresh where no one knows her backstory. She ends up renting next door to a funeral home with it's very own shy/grumpy/socially awkward mortician, Callum. He needs to be married before his birthday in order to inherit the funeral home. They strike up a friendship and Lark tries to help him find a wife. Even though it's been two years, Lark has a lot of guilt associated with her husband's death. Their chemistry takes Lark and Callum both by surprise. I found this book to be sweet, spicy, and poignant. It does deal with some heavy topics like grief; both current and past. I'm looking forward to reading more books from Ivy in the future.
Tropes included: grumpy/sunshine, widowed heroine, marriage of convenience, friends to lovers, demisexual hero, hero with a stutter, heroine helps hero find a wife, American heroine escapes to Ireland, Irish dirty talk, friends with benefits, workplace conflict (not involving hero)
Thank you to NetGalley, Ivy Fairbanks, and Penguin Group Putnam for this eARC. All opinions expressed are my own. #netgalley #morbidlyyours #ivyfairbanks #penguingroup
I thought this story was going to have such potential. I loved the premise of the FMC losing her husband and then falling in love with an undertaker. The story just fell flat with me. I roll my eyes when the main characters go on and on about their best friend but don't tell them a major issue in their lives. If everything can be resolved if the main characters would just talk, it is a major turn off to me. I also did not like the FMC not wanting a relationship, but she is okay having sex with him. No thanks. Now you are just messing with people and it really turned me off. I got 75% through the book but I just couldn't bring myself to finish. This was not my cup of tea, but hopefully others will love it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. All opinons are my own.
Morbidly Yours provided all of the satisfying elements of a romance novel, with new concepts that made the book fresh, fun, and laugh out loud funny. The novel goes so much deeper than just a friends to lovers concept and deals with grief and self confidence in an appropriate way. I highly recommend this book for library romance book clubs and romance collections.
