Book Review: Do NOT Eat Like a Tiger Shark!: Wacky Ways Animals Slurp, Chomp and Gulp by Etta Kaner and Heather Wilson (illustrator)
Rating: 4 Stars
I recently had the pleasure of reviewing "Do NOT Eat Like a Tiger Shark!: Wacky Ways Animals Slurp, Chomp and Gulp" by Etta Kaner, and it was quite the delightful read! This book takes us on a whimsical journey through the wild and wacky world of animal eating habits. From bearded vultures who throw their meals to dogs who make an art form out of slurping, the authors showcase how animals consume their food in the most surprising, amazing, and downright bizarre ways.
Now, let’s be clear: while it might sound like these animal behaviors are fun to mimic, the book quickly reminds us that copying them at the dinner table would be a recipe for disaster. Imagine trying to eat like an Amazon horned frog and swallowing your food whole—yikes! Kaner cleverly interweaves humor with practical advice, encouraging kids (and maybe some adults too) to mind their manners while dining.
One of my favorite aspects of the book is the beautiful illustrations by Heather Wilson. The colorful depictions really bring the text to life, showing kids in various scenarios—like a birthday party or splashing around at sea—emulating how animals eat. It’s not just funny; it’s also visually captivating. The illustrations beautifully portray the animals and their habitats, making each page a feast for the eyes.
Overall, Do NOT Eat Like a Tiger Shark! is an entertaining and creative way for kids to learn about animals while having a good laugh. It’s educational without being preachy and captures the imagination with its playful take on animal behaviors. If you're looking for a fun addition to your child's bookshelf, this book is definitely worth picking up!

This book is not only funny it is educational. From everything to why snakes stick out their tongues to why elephants eat with their trunks. This book is full of information while seeing fun cartoon illustrations.
This book was a fun way to teach children manners in a silly way. The silliness would be engaging to young readers while also teaching them about animals.
Do NOT Eat Like a Tiger Shark is hilarious! It reminds me or Butt or Face? This goofy book describes many different ways different animals eat, that are different than how we eat. My favorite example was the Amazon Horned Frog. I loved learning with this book!
Thanks to @netgalley and @orcabook for an Earc.
Did you know that cows burp??
A really sweet book about the strange ways that animals eat! The story explains to the readers how not to eat like certain animals while giving brilliant facts. It is a hilarious book which will keep the reader laughing throughout.
Illustrations are really bright & cute and will keep the readers captivated throughout. With great factual information, this non fiction book will entertain and teach children. There are great added facts at the back of the book about each animal.
Great to help with non-fiction reports at school. Recommended for 5-9 year olds.
A cute book about all the weird ways animals eat! It goes through "how not to eat" but the purpose is to teach kids facts about animals. I thought this was a really cute way to do this. The illustrations were also cute!
This hilarious book will have kids roaring with laughter as they learn new and interesting facts about a variety of animals. I can see using this book as a hook for nonfiction report writing, as a mentor for writing our own creative takes in nonfiction, or even as a read aloud during a nonfiction unit.
Thank you Netgalley for advanced copy for review.
This book is a fun read for a kid that loves nature and animals. It has some great factual information on how animals eat. The illustrations are funny showing kids trying to eat like the animals. I also liked how the author portrayed a diverse family in the book. Good non-fiction read!
Just the kind of book I would have wanted as a kid – animals, fun facts, and goofy illustrations. This is a great non-fiction read for kids who enjoy Wild Kratz or sharing weird information with their friends at school. There are extra facts in the back of the book about each of the animals to expand your knowledge. And hey, you may have found a new favorite animal!
Thank you to Etta Kane and NetGalley for supplying me with an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
WOW! As a boy mom and as a kindergarten teacher, I was impressed with this book. My four year old son (who LOVES anything to do with animals) loved how it made connections back to how kids his age could possibly eat. The story was engaging and the pictures were delightful! I loved how humor was sprinkled in within the facts to keep the book engaging. This is a great book to read for an age group for 5-9 year olds. I would suggest reading this aloud to your class if you are doing any research projects regarding animals! The kiddos will love to learn all of these unique facts about the way animals eat. And, hey, when your kid throws food on the floor, just think that it could be worse. They could try and eat with their feet!
This is colorful and informative, my kids and I enjoyed it. Some things we knew and some we learned. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy.
My son struggled to stay engaged until we got to the pages about cows and the cow passed gas. He thought that was so funny and wanted to read the book again. The book is both humorous and education. A fun way to learn facts about different animals and the way they eat.
This would be a great introduction to learning about animals. As a teacher, this would be perfect for launching an animal unit! Many of the animals, children might be familiar with, but there are others that they might not be. This book presents facts about what and how animals eat in an engaging way. I think that readers ages 6-8 will love this humorous book! I appreciated the illustrations too! Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
I chuckled a lot at this book. I enjoyed that the story worked and flowed even if you weren't reading every fact aloud. This is one that would work well with an older kid and a little kid reading together.
This is such a a fun book! I love books like this that can be read in two ways - as a short bedtime story or as a longer story with fun facts and information. My kids would love this one!
Silly eaters ages 6-8 will love this humorous book, learning about the wacky ways animals slurp, chomp, and gulp!
What if humans stuck out their tongues to smell, like snakes? What if we ate with our heads upside down, like flamingos? This picture book gets kids asking those questions, and more! With bright illustrations and silly scenarios, kids will enjoy this book without even realizing that they are learning a lot about how animals eat!
I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
A fun book to teach kids how other animals eat. I liked that it gives you fun facts of very different animals from all around the world, rather that the usual farm animals. It could be a fun activity to do with kids and messy play.
The illustrations are really cute and the book is a lot of fun.
Students thought that some parts were exciting and fun to learn about, but not all pages were engaging. Some of the animals they learned about were not as interesting. They loved the shark! They learned new facts, such as the fact that cows need to burp and the birds drop the bones to open them. They thought some of the facts were cool, new, and interesting.
I thought the book was alright. It had some engaging moments and the illustrations were detailed. I didn't like the font choice for the narrative portion of the text. It didn't look great. I also felt like the reading of this book out loud was a bit disjointed as it switched from narrative voice about the humans to the facts about the animals.
Thanks to netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I read this book with my six-year-old daughter, and she enjoyed it. She read the bolded words, and then I read the information tidbits for her. We both learned a lot about how different creatures eat. She did get a little bored about halfway through so I would maybe recommend splitting it and reading in two sittings. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy.
This is such a fun way to teach children about using their manners at the dinner table.
My toddler laughed at a lot of the depictions in the book. It is also very educational, teaching children about the different ways that animals and insects while using these silly depictions to show why they shouldn't.
This was a fun and cute read. I would purchase a physical copy of this book for my toddler.
I volunteered to read a copy of this ARC through NetGalley.
