Great tips and tricks for being your best self as an adult female. A great book to read cover to cover or use as a reference as needed.
It's Probably Your Hormones is packed with great science and research. This was a great read and a book that I would like to hang on to for future reference. Thank you to Dr. Mary Ryan, Hachete Book Club, Mobius Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book prior to publishing.
I don't know much about hormones other than the stereotypes. I felt like Dr. Ryan did a good job of balancing the science of hormones with the translation into why the science matters and how it impacts women's bodies. Dr. Ryan views her patients through their medical histories and I wish I could find a local doctor like that. The book reiterates how important it is for women to share burdens with their partners and children and prioritize rest.
One of my most meaningful takeaways was that when women have children at an average age, they'll be approaching peri-menopause when their children are entering puberty. Both hormonal changes can inspire rage but knowing the rage is hormonal can channel empathy for a shared journey.
Overall, a really helpful guide and I would recommend it.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I'm in my 40s, but I would have loved this book earlier in my life. As Dr. Mary Ryan writes in the blurb, I never considered hormones until I started thinking about perimenopause. This is a great overview of how hormones can affect your life and body. I will definitely recommend this one to all my girlfriends.
Dr. Mary Ryan reminds us at the beginning of the book that “Hormones are chemicals that produce and control every muscle and organ in the body.” Hormones impact our well being, our emotions, as well as the way our body functions. This books aims to help the reader become more knowledgable about the topic, identify issues the reader may be experiencing and make the reader more comfortable discussing these topics.
Dr. Ryan breaks down the endocrine system which is made up of all the hormones in your body in a way that everyone can understand. You don’t have to be a science whiz or a doctor to understand what she’s teaching you. The chapters surrounding Menstruation and Fertility are must reads! She helps to normalize these conversations and encourages you to include your partners in these chapter discussions. Listen to your body, get rest, exercise and love yourself are her main messages throughout the book. While we can try to do it all, sometimes we need to slow down and put ourselves first to get our health in order. Sometimes that means medication but sometimes it also means a lifestyle change. Dr. Ryan breaks down when each of those options would apply.
While the book is obviously geared towards women, it should be read by men too. She speaks openly about menstruation and menopause in hopes of breaking the stigmas our culture has fostered surrounding these life events. She is a firm believer that partners should be 50/50 in everything. She weaves through all of the chapters with case studies for patients she worked with to provide a real life impact to the topic at hand and assists with putting circumstances into perspective. This is a great resource and should be highly encouraged for all to read.

This handbook should be required reading for high school health classes. It was a quick read full of practical advice that unfortunately many will not receive from their PCPs. I would recommend it to all females, from teens who just started puberty, through older women who have undergone menopause. It is also helpful for men to not only understand women's reproductive health, but also how hormones affect everything in both men and women, including our mental health, fertility, and physical health.
"Hormones control our entire world. They control our muscles, our immune system, our emotions, our sex, whether we are male or female, our ability to fall in love, our smell, our need to eat, our need to survive, our sense of danger. They are behind our ability to procreate, our desire to procreate, our ability to enjoy, to feel stressed, to sleep, to stay awake and to dream."

Another amazing nonfiction novel! This made me question if my horomones are in balance and I began self diagnosing….totally not an issue!
I didn’t know much about this topic — beyond lived experiences — before reading this book so I learned a lot. It gave me a great deal to think about how hormones affect so many facets of life and gave a lot of actionable things to try.
It is way past time that we start talking about how our hormones affect every aspect of our lives. This book is written in a clear, easy, friendly style and hopefully will be a starting point for women (and men) to have a conversation with their doctor. Maybe it will also inspire and empower people to make behavior changes that improve their lives.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. As someone who has struggled with hormone imbalance, I was really looking forward to reading this but I found it did not contain any information I didn't already know from simple Google searches. The "chapters" were short (some were not even a page long) causing the book to seem choppy and not flow. A lot of the information seemed repetitive and I struggled to get through this one.
This book was both informative and more importantly, encouraging! Dr. Ryan emphasizes throughout her book that it is essential to take care of ourselves as women by eating well, getting enough rest and minimalizing stress in our lives. I feel empowered to make some positive changes also more prepared for the upcoming seasons in my life of perimenopause and menopause.
This book was extremely accessible. It was full of practical tips that I could implement immediately. I truly enjoyed this book!
I loved this book! It definitely has given me insight to my own health and some tips and tricks to help me as well!
Dr. Mary Ryan provides specific and sensible advice for women on how to address hormone changes through their lives. It is evident from her writing that she is passionate about women being advocates for themselves. She is also compassionate toward women in regard to the changes that women face as we age. I enjoyed reading the case studies where she shares specific stories of women's issues and the steps she took to address the issues. This book was my reminder to take care of what I eat, how I manage my stress, and develop good sleep habits. I look forward to putting Dr. Ryan's advice into practice, and when needed, work with my doctor to find the best solution for me.

This is a must read for anyone struggling with their hormones. It was easy to read, and well written. I definitely want to reread this and take notes on the stratigies and advice portions of the book.

This is a very well researched and thorough book about hormones. It would be a great place to start for someone who is at the beginning of their hormone-imbalance journey and wants to know more.

This is a very informative and must have resource for those who are struggling with their hormones, or those who might not quite know what's wrong but need some insight into their own bodies. This book is packed with strategies, advice, history, details and more; it's a guide that is very necessary. I do wish that this had focused less heavily on older women and family women, and also had included information about younger women and their struggles, but overall, it was good.
Thank you to NetGalley, Dr. Mary Ryan, and Hachette Book Group for the eARC of this book.
Though this book focused much more on mothers, older women, and women in family settings than anticipated, I still found that it contained some practical information. It wasn't really applicable to my lifestyle at the moment, so I do wish it had been marketed a bit more accurately. Regardless, it had some helpful facts and it went by very quickly.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!
This was more family women focused than I expected. Maybe it gets better the further you go but I decided to DNF just cause I didn’t think it fit my lifestyle
