Southern fiction at it’s best. I easily engaged with the characters and I hated fir it to end. Family drama draws me in.
Many thanks to David C Cook and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
An enjoyable southern dysfunctional family story where the bad guys aren't entirely bad and the good guys have some flaws. What is it about southern fiction like this that makes it so appealing to me. Does it make me feel better about my own life?
This was such a moving story of redemption and second chances. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. I loved the characters, especially Ernestine—the wise, Haitian nanny/housekeeper. I also loved that the setting is in south Alabama which made it even more relatable. The proverbs at the beginning of each chapter added to the richness of the story which was inspired by the story of King David’s daughter Tamar. The writing was both compelling and poetic—I just loved it! Highly recommended (but trigger warning for domestic abuse and rape).
