If Rachel writes it, I am reading it and I will be having bad dreams about it!!!! This book was consuming and weird and hard to put down, I really enjoyed it.
First, thank you Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me access to this e-arc. Second, I give this book 2.5/5 stars but rounded up to 3. I was very excited for this book as I’ve heard such good reviews for the author and her other titles but I was pretty disappointed… I was ready for my first vampire read of spooky season and I got pretty much two girls being controlled by their thirst and resentment. The title is very fitting but I feel there was so much potential and it fell short in my opinion.
During a surprise birthday, weekend getaway with her best friend Naomi, Sloane gets the surprise of her death, errr, I mean life.
Sloane and Naomi are complete opposites, but opposites attract, right? While Sloane is cautious and careful, Naomi is wild and carefree. After being invited to a stranger's mansion for a party, Naomi and Sloane find themselves in the middle of an orgy of a hot and steamy mix of eccentric, wealthy foreigners. Faithful to her cheating husband, Sloane denies her attraction to the strange guy in attendance, at first... giving in to her sexual prowess, Sloane encounters a dangerous situation, one that will change her life forever.
Fun, short and full of blood-sucking vamps, Rachel Harrison draws you right in! A TWISTED ending that was the perfect conclusion! LOVED!
Sloane Parker is in her mid-30s, married to a cheater and stagnant in life. Her husband sends her on a girls weekend with her bff Nay, who is always up for pushing limits and adventure. A visit to a crazy party takes things too far — and then they get really thirsty. The kind of thirst that just won’t go away until it is satisfied. It’s no spoiler that this is a vampire story. It’s fun, light and has good writing. Good for the spooky season!
Thank you Netgalley and Berkeley for a free e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you so much to Berkley for the gifted copy of So Thirsty by Rachel Harrison! 🍷
I enjoyed this one so much, it really felt like a story with no concrete plot? I loved the friendship between Sloane and Naomi, especially how it took center stage and came into play during that crucial moment. Ultimately I adored the transformations and how it pushed Sloane to take a clear view on her life and become more confident and driven. Naomi was always a larger-than-life character who was really there for a good time, not a long time 😗
Overall, super enjoyed this one! Maybe wished there had been more vampirisms and a more conclusive ending, it was abrupt and it almost felt like it was setting up something more?
Sloane doesn’t need a reminder that she’s getting older. When her husband books her a weekend getaway with her best friend Naomi, she anticipates a weekend of wine tastings and avoiding her real-life problems (like her shaky marriage). But Naomi has other plans, and when she plans a night out with mysterious strangers, the two women have to reckon with changes to their lives for forever.
This smart, character-driven novel about vampires offers readers a somewhat fresh perspective. The exploration of aging is well done, and the unique twist of taking away the option of aging from the protagonist allows for tension in the novel. There are some cliches here (a brooding male love interest, questions about the ethics of animal blood vs. human, etc.), but what Harrison excels at is writing complicated, nuanced, and layered female friendships. That’s on full display here as Sloane and Naomi end up confronting the issues in their relationship as they face a literal forever together. An entertaining - if uneven - take on the vampire genre and perfect reading for spooky season.
I was a little disappointed with this one. The story was good but the ending was lacking in my opinion. I felt like it was abrupt and forced. If this was a series of books, the ending would work. I believe this is a standalone book. Because of the ending, I probably won’t recommend it to anyone. Overall I gave it 2.5 stars because the rest of the story was good.
I had a coworker describe this book as a fun read about two friends. I have to admit that I didn't understand what she meant when I first started the book, but after finishing it, I can totally understand. The characters and the situation were right up my ally and I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish.
This was my very first Rachel Harrison book and I will definitely be checking out her other work! I’ve always been obsessed with vampires and I’m often looking for fresh takes on stories that feature them. This did not disappoint and I had a great time reading it!
Loved this one! Honestly such fun and unique take on a vampire story. The one thing I can always count on in Rachel Harrison’s books is a strong theme of female friendship and So Thirsty is no different.
Anything written by Rachel Harrison I will read and devour. Her knack of combining horror, gore, friendships, humor, and romance is impeccable. Especially when it's a book about vampires, this book was so good.
At first I really disliked the character Sloane. I thought she was meek with low self esteem and a total pushover but wow, talk about some character growth at the end. Her friendship with Naomi was one of the truest ones I've read about. The shy introvert with the outgoing gorgeous friend that butt heads and have arguments but love each other to death at the end of the day, it was almost refreshing to read. The drama they went through once they became vampires was hilarious but sad at the same time. The adventures they experience had my heart pounding and blood rushing (haha) and I loved every minute of it. The ending brought a huge smile to my face and I honestly want more from these characters.
The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 I because it did lose my attention a few times in the middle. Nothing to do with the writing style it just had a few slow spots but overall this was a fantastic book that I hope many people enjoy.
Many thanks to Berkley Publishing for the gifted copy for my honest review!
My third book by this author and everything I’ve read from her has been very firmly in the horror-lite category, with a little bit of camp and a lot of dark humor. I liked this one a little more than the others, but still I felt a little underwhelmed. I’m thinking this is what I should expect from this author’s work. Not that it’s bad at all-it’s just always a little “less” than what I’m expecting.
Sloane and her BFF Naomi go on a girls’ trip for Sloane’s birthday. They’re at a party with some people they’d just met when things suddenly escalate and their life changes forever. Sloane is annoying; she is constantly second-guessing herself and has very little confidence. Her friend Naomi is much more vivacious and fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants. Most of the story involves Sloane learning to lean-in to life in every single way, with Naomi’s help. Ultimately, I liked her growth into a more confident Sloane, but I still wish for MORE in terms of vampires and horror.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.
Thank you Berkley Pub and PRH Audio for the free book! #BerkleyPartner #Berkley
This was a fun and addicting read. These two’s friendship is one that I think is pretty common amongst best friends: one level headed one, and one who is just chaos personified. Naturally, the latter is what gets them into the messy situation that leads to them becoming vampires.
I just wanted to leave Naomi sometimes, but I commend Sloane’s loyalty to her friend, even if the situation quite literally made them end up dead. True ride or dies.
Both of their romantic partners absolutely suck. Naomi is in one of the longest friends with benefits situations and doesn’t even really realize it, and Sloane’s husband cheats on her thinking he can get away with it and panics every time she finds out. Yes, there are multiple times. So at least that was easy baggage to drop.
They find a family in the ones who turned them, who happen to be an eclectic bunch. I loved Ilie, he was such a himbo and ray of sunshine. Henry was dark and brooding, but took to Sloane right away and is a good match for her I think. Which is all well and good since she could quite literally have him for an eternity now.
There are bits of horror and gore, but it’s not really scary, more just a detail of the lives they lead now. Some of it is wild though.. Like Ms. Alice… MA’AM.
Anyways, this was my first read from this author but definitely won’t be my last! I loved the writing, the character driven story, and how she was able to just keep me enthralled in a book that really doesn’t have much plot (because it’s character driven). I guess because of this, I felt the ending was a bit abrupt, but if you take it from a character driven perspective, it was a good ending because the girls finally accepted themselves and their new form.
Sloane’s birthday is coming up and her husband surprises her with a birthday getaway with her best friend, Naomi. By the end of the trip Sloane is forced to make a decision to save Naomi’s life that will change both of their lives for eternity.
At first the pacing was slow with themes of friendship, getting older and self-worth. Then the story took a turn! It was then a fun ride filled with adventure with some humor, gore, and a little bit of romance. This is definitely not your typical vampire book; it was a unique story about living life and friendship. It’s the perfect book for spooky season!
I’m still not sure how I feel about this one but I do know I read it in 48 hours and couldn’t stop thinking about it. The FMCs both annoyed me slightly but overall, I’m left wanting to read an entire series about these vampires and their escapades
I think I can certainly safely recommend this book to audiences in general, but it was not for me personally. It read very fanfic-y (which, admittedly, sometimes is just what someone needs) and the friendship came off toxic without really delving into the toxicity, and thus ended up a bit flat. I wish there had been more development between characters (mainly Sloane and Henry, Sloane and Naomi) to make their connections seem at all believable.
I really enjoyed this. It follows a woman upset about life and age which I feel like a lot of women can relate to. Then it goes off the rails and its wild and fun while also keeping that "conversational" thread. There's something so quirky about Harrison's stories that just work. While Sloane and Naomi were infuriating, they were also so much fun to read about. I can't wait for her next book.
SO THIRSTY follows two friends, Sloane and Naomi, as their innocent girls trip ends up changing their lives forever. This is a modern vampire story with a cast of fascinating, deeply flawed characters you can’t help but root for. In true Harrison fashion, the author weaves dark humor and introspective moments with horror to craft a sinister, hilarious, and touching story that I could not put down. The themes of friendship and recognizing your self-worth really make this novel shine. Highly recommend!

What I Liked:
1. Cover is fun
2. Quick read
3. Fast chapters
What I Didn't Like:
1. Naomi is cookie cutter romcon/comedy best friend
2. Tone of book
3. Repetitive
4. Insta love of Henry and Sloan
5. Hated all the relationships with all characters
Overall Thoughts:
{{Disclaimer: I write my review as I read}}
Naomi kinda annoys me and reminds me too much of all best friends in friendships where one character is more introverted.
Joel cheating on her 3 times is ridiculous plus the other girl he was cheating with said there was more.
Naomi dragging Sloane along to some strangers house when it's supposed to be a girls weekend. God, Naomi is seriously every comedy romcon friend that pushes you to live outside your boring normal life.
Sloan says no one hurt her but her husband sent her names photos around, so I would say yeah he definitely pushed her to her reaction afterwards.
I'm sorry oh my God I hate Naomi! First she puts alone in this whole scenario where now Salon is a vampire and she had to save her friend or let her die. Then they go back to the hotel where now Sloan has to babysit Naomi because she can't control her urges it has taken off.
It's so annoying because Naomi is followed in to a rest area by a man and she defends herself against him, but Sloan has to kill him because he goes to attack them. But then Naomi starts guilty Sloan for having a pretty mundane basic life. I just don't understand why Sloan would have a friend like this when she acts like her life isn't good. Any friend who guilts you for your life choices is a piece of crap.
I feel so bad for Sloan she's surrounded by all these crappy people. She has this narcissistic self-absorbed best friend and a cheating piece of crap husband who continues to lie to her face.
Just what every book is an insta love from a woman that just broke up with her husband and 3 days later she so in love with him. Over it!! Why can't these books have more substance than just a cheap sex moment of the woman having to get off.
I want to dnf this book - - - it's so annoying. Two sex scenes in like 30 pages. We get it you have a penis and vagina.
Ending was stupid.
Final Thoughts:
I'm sorry I really thought that this was a different book I mean I knew I was reading this but I thought it was going to be different. In the end though it's like this comedy vampire story. I had never read a Rachel Harrison book so I thought it would be more like scary horror vampire story, but it's not it's low key jokes every second and an annoying friendship. I didn't enjoy the tone of it. I also have an issue with the author's writing for so many books that she's had out sometimes her books come off very generic to me.
As if you couldn't tell I can't stand Naomi. It's like she thought Sloan should have the same life that she has and because she doesn't she's less than. There are countless reasons that Naomi shames her;
• Sloan for not being in an open relationship like she's in and even makes fun of her for staying monogamous to her cheating boyfriend.
• Makes fun of her clothes because they aren't fun enough
• Tells her she's boring and lives a "safe" life
Sloan is never allowed to be herself when it comes to Naomi. Everything has to be over the top and so crazy girl action.
As I kept reading the book though it was weird to me to keep reminding myself these characters were 36. And I know that 36 is not old but a lot of other things reminded me of something like 19 to 21 year olds would be doing. Naomi is still doing this like crazy college girl life plus the tone the author gives to them with their writing makes them come off very immature. They did not sound like women who are almost 40.
[Rant] At the end of the book it just feels like it turns into this romance. We are no longer getting this story of Sloan changing to a vampire. It's so boring. We start off with this person and I think we're going to get this like horror story but then halfway through she meets up with the guy again, Henry and they're suddenly in love and she's being like all depressed about herself as a person and she's not good enough and why does he love her. Please gag me! Why did this turn into a romance??... I am so sick of being hoodwinked into books that promise they're going to be creepy or maybe even scary and they turn into romance. What is the message of this book? Is it that Sloan can't be on our own and she never has an opinion of herself? She's either doing what her friend Naomi tells her to do and now she's just doing what Henry wants her to do after already just getting out of a relationship. [End rant]

Thanks to Netgalley and Berkley Publishing for this advanced copy of the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thank you Rachel Harrison, Berkley Publishing Group, and NetGalley for the ARC!
Rachel Harrison is an author that I have honestly come to really like (this is my fourth book I've read by her I think?). I find around Autumn when I'm looking for atmospheric reads, I can always count on a Rachel Harrison book to be both cozy and spooky, with a little awesome body horror mixed in. I have to say though, this one was not one of my favorites and would honestly be low on the list if I were to pick up one of her books again. A big hang up for me this time was the insufferable main characters. I honestly feel bad for this cool ass poly vampire group- now they have to spend eternity with Sloane and Naomi.
First we have the main character Sloane who I just want to take by the shoulders and shake a bit. She's depressing, whiny, and just an overall debbie downer of a person. I think her character arc is interesting, but if she really has to be turned into a vampire to come to terms with the monotony of her life and marriage idk what to tell you.
Then there's her best friend Naomi who's a spoiled brat, selfish, and grating. She's a terrible friend and you're supposed to spend the whole book hoping that their friendship hanging on by a thread is worth salvaging? I'm not buying it.
Collectively, the two go on a killing spree essentially as they try to navigate their vampirism and strained friendship. All the while, Sloane is falling in an insta-love romance with one of the Lestat-like vampires. Whatever. I didn't really care about this romance at all and found it kind of unbelievable.
Despite all my qualms with the characters, I still think it's a fun book. It's atmospheric, spooky, has pretty cool body horror, and still manages to retain some of that cozy element that I enjoy in Rachel Harrison books. It's also fast-paced and well written like her other books so I just end of breezing right through it. If it had been a slog, I know I would've thought it was a waste of my time. I think Rachel Harrison really shines when she doesn't just conform to the idea of having a "witch book" or "vampire book" or "werewolf book". Her last one, "Black Sheep", which I read earlier this year, felt the strongest to me and I think it's because she wrote about a less familiar plot. Like I said, I do enjoy her books so I'm liable to pick up pretty much anything she writes. I just hope the next one is on that "Black Sheep" level.
