Thank you Todd Sturgell and NetGalley for this advanced reader copy of Dinosaurs in Space.
This children's book is jam packed with adventure, emotion, and history!
It was advertised to be good for children 4+ and honestly that is a major stretch. There is a lot of verbiage and concepts that would be tough for pre-K - 1st grade levels to grasp. Some of the illustrations are a bit chaotic to explore sensory wise, which may overwhelm younger readers. My son is 6 years old, and autistic. I attempted to read this to him, and my neurotypical 5 year old niece - both have interest in dinosaurs for reference - and they quickly lost interest because of the advanced wording and material.
Now, that being said - this would be super fun for late elementary/early middle school readers! A lot of fun science and history information is included.
I received a free eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Kids love dinos, so this was another no-brainer to order. It’s an interesting take on the extinction story - in this case the dinos themselves are interrupting. I’m actually not sure if this would be better cataloged as a picture book or nonfiction - there’s definitely some good informational stuff…but also some of the goofiness of the dinos interrupting the story (and misunderstanding - thinking that the asteroid blasted the dinos into space, rather than into…pieces). And of course there’s a bit of actual science at the end, including a glossary. It’s a little too meta for storytime, but it would be a fun addition to any dino-loving kid’s collection. And who doesn’t love pictures of dinosaurs in space helmets?
Dinosaurs in Space is a cute and informative book. Children learn all about dinosaurs, the periods that different dinosaurs lived in, and what caused their extinction, but I don't think there are many books out there discussing the aftermath, a.k.a. dinosaur parts in space. I think this book would be a delight for young students learning about dinosaurs and will spark some interesting discussions.
A super cute and whimsical story about dinosaur fossils being in space, on the moon. I have zero doubt that kids will absolutely love this book. It has a fun (informal, but the good kind) tone and writing style, which will make kids really enjoy reading this. Additionally, all of the information was wildly interesting, and I even learned some stuff. Kids will be fascinated by the relevant fun facts throughout the entire book. Lastly, for the illustrations, I think that they were great! They weren't too realistic, yet they were still accurate as cartoons. A clever little detail that the illustrator included with the drawings was labeling every dinosaur shown with their name. This will help dinosaur names stick with kids and they will also likely discover their new favorite dinosaur. The colors were also very well-done for all of the drawings, and it helped make them even more fun and engaging.
Bravo!
Just when I thought there wasn’t anything new to learn about dinosaurs, we learn that dinosaur fragments could possibly exist on the moon. This fun book that isn’t just an information dump, but where the dinosaurs interact with the reader. It’s fun and interesting and kids who like dinosaurs are going to love this book.
I absolutely adored this book! We are currently on a road trip and I read it to my kids two nights in a row at the hotel, it was a requested read the second night. It strikes a perfect balance of cute and informational. The book talk with Austro and friends got extra giggles.
Dinosaurs in Space is a fun book that explores what happened to dinosaurs when the asteroid hit earth that led to the dinosaurs extinction. It is written in a way to keep kids engaged while also delivering a surprising amount of dinosaur facts. We enjoyed this book!
I went ahead and read this to my 5 and 8 year old boys and they loved the idea of dinosaur fossils in space! I liked that a lot of the information was presented in a fun and silly way that kept them giggling and engaged. Now my 5yo wants to be an "earth paleontologist" AND a "MOON paleontologist" haha. However, the info dumping at the end wasn't as fun to read as the rest which made the target age for the book harder to discern and it would've been nicer to find a lot of that information in the humor narrative as well.
It's a funny book about dinosaurs learning about their history. The Austroraptor gets confused by the narrator and thinks there were dinosaur astronauts. The back matter gives more detailed information about the history of dinosaurs and the possibility of dinosaur fossils on the moon.
Well done!
The illustrations are bright, colorful, and entertaining helping my littles to understand what was being discussed and held their attention.
The content was amazing. Going between non-fiction and fiction seamlessly allowed for an educational book to not run out of steam for my girls (ages 2 and 5). They love dinosaurs but sometimes the educational books lose their attention because everything goes over their head. This is a fun way to keep them entertained while they learn a thing or two. This is very cute and this will become a regular in our house.
Thank you Todd Sturgell and Sourcebooks kids for allowing my family the opportunity to review this amazing work.
I will also be posting on my Instagram @_RayLayneBooks_.
Thanks.
The clever way the author mixes science and silliness made this book so fun to read with my 4 year old. Some of the jokes went a little over his head, but that made our nightly read a little more exciting since I had to explain and teach. This would be the perfect book to excite students before a lesson on dinosaurs or paleontology. I would also recommend it as a storytime read for libraries.
And, to add to this review, my 4 year old requested this book a second time for our nighttime story.
The only thing that we had trouble with was how the story was split between two pages. It made it a little difficult to read as a digital download.
This is my favorite book I’ve picked up on NetGalley to date! The narrator has this fun little banter back and forth with the dinosaurs, which my son would think is hilarious, but at the same time it was so educational. Dare I call it a picture book for adults? I watched Jurassic park when I was way too young, so all of my recurring nightmares fit the last 25 years include dinosaurs. Because of that, I never had any interest in learning about them. That said, my son loves dinosaurs and this is a perfect book to get his foot in the door with the topic in an age appropriate way. Six stars! I will absolutely be buying this, and will likely be one of the first books featured on my children’ readers account once I launch it!
Dinos AND space?! Two hugely popular topics for kids and people of all ages!
The facts of this book are mixed in with some humor with dinosaurs interjecting and getting the narrator off track. That could be a hit with a bit older age group of kids like 1st and 2nd grade. I think if you read this to a younger group, maybe skip some of the jokes as they may confuse young kids to the point of the book.
I also felt there was some confusion with if dinosaur fossils have actually ever been found in space. At the end of the story they clarify in the extra notes section. But again, while reading this to kids, be sure to clarify that it is a hypothesis and fossils haven’t yet been found on the moon, Mars, or other planets.
Kids with a decent amount of space and dinosaur knowledge will probably find this book interesting. Others will enjoy it for the illustrations.
What a great book this is! Sturgell does a wonderful job of packing info into this small volume about specific dinosaurs, dinosaur science, and dinosaur evolution and extinction in a witty, clever way amidst some great illustrations. I hope that he does a get a call from NASA or at least can someday write about how dinosaur fossils were found on the moon. A big thank you to Sourcebooks Kids and NetGalley for the early read in exchange for my honest opinion. I look forward to recommending this book to all my young dinosaur lovers!
Dinosaurs in Space, written by Todd Stargell, is a story about dinosaurs, told by dinosaurs, and listened to by dinosaurs. This humorous book; with fun and beautiful illustrations, tells the story of dinosaurs that lived many years ago, the asteroid that came to Earth, and the “dinosaurs in space” that these dinosaurs were so happy to learn about. I felt like I learned a lot from this book, I am not very knowledgeable about the different types of dinosaurs or the different periods that they lived in, and I am excited to share this knowledge with the preschoolers I work with. I can also really see little ones living this book, that the dinosaurs are also listening to the story, and the humor included in the book. Definitely recommend! Thank you to NetGalley, and to the author, illustrator, and publisher of this book for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Oh man, this is such a great book! I already know my two boys (ages 4-7) would become obsessed with it and ask me to read it to them approximately a million times.
This book is very educational on dinosaurs and how they became extinct and ‘ended up in space’ but it’s presented in such a fun way.
It starts off very factual but quickly gets silly. With an unseen narrator and dinosaurs jumping in on the story, it’s a fun way for kids to interact. The illustrations are so cute and I love the color palette that was used.
Will definitely keep my eye out when this is released in September and will ask my local library to purchase their own copy!
An unseen narrator describes how dinosaurs lived on Earth until a giant asteroid landed, and then surmises they could have been blasted into outer space. A parallel text (in a hand-lettered typeface) features dinosaurs addressing the reader, describing dinosaurs on the moon. The two sides have a friendly argument, which adds humor and more information on dinosaurs, which will engage a wide age range. Overall, the text is a little long and disorganized but is entertaining. The brightly colored illustrations were created with pen and ink and digitally colored, highlighting many realistic-looking dinosaurs. The book ends with more information on dinosaur fossils on the moon, a glossary, facts on the dinosaurs featured in the story, and the Chicxulub asteroid.
HILARIOUS! This book really does explain why there might be dinosaurs on the moon. But the explanation comes with information about the different kinds of dinosaurs and their history, what happened to them, and their timeline. I think it would be physically impossible to explain this in a more fun way. While I was reading it, I was picturing myself reading it with a group and acting out the different dinosaurs, including the Martian dinosaurs. Even children too young to understand the material will be able to enjoy the lively action. And my favorite bit of information: there is a list of different kinds of scientists who study dinosaurs, for kids who feel passionate about dinosaurs. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this.
As an adult I thought this book was hilarious. Very education on how Dinosaurs "ended up in space". I learned something new and this is a great book for older kiddos.
This was a cute and silly dinosaur book. I did find the transition from space somewhat difficult to follow, and I think my son (age 2) would be unable to follow along. I think this is better suited for the 5-7 age range, and I believe my daughter would enjoy the jokes and laugh at the dinosaurs as they learn about the asteroid destruction. The dinosaurs make wild assumptions that are slowly corrected with a factual response. I thought the illustrations added to the enjoyment of the story, and I liked reading their little conversations. I enjoyed the factual approach to the dinosaurs and thought that the dinosaur index at the end was especially helpful
