✍️ In this endearing book, an author and an illustrator embark on a venture to create a picture book. However, their visions for the book diverge significantly right from the start.
🎨 The banter between the author and illustrator is amusing. The illustrator’s whimsical creations add to the hilarity throughout the book. Yet, beyond the humor lies a deeper theme—the art of collaboration among creators.
✍️ Picture books thrive on the synergy between captivating illustrations and compelling narratives. In this case, the author and illustrator learn to navigate their differences, resulting in a delightful book that draws inspiration from both perspectives.
🎨 Young readers, especially those with aspirations in writing or illustrating, will find this book appealing. Additionally, it makes for an adorable gift for authors and illustrators alike.
This book is 40 pages long and the targeted reading age is 5 to 8 years old.
Thank you @netgalley and @capstonepub for a copy of this book, which I have read and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
While the author narrates, the illustrator draws, until they realize that they have completely different ideas for the book. Can they come together and find a shared vision, or are the citizens of Sprinkletown destined to be destroyed by the hungry beast?
The illustrations are perfect and the story is a lot of fun! This is a wonderful way to introduce the craft of storytelling and the concept of cooperation. My story time kids are going to love it.
Disclaimer: I received a free electronic copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This is a story within a story, or a two for one deal! Both about friendship and working together. All whilst sprinkling a bit of information about the book making process!
Cute Illustrations and great story between the Author and Illustrator. Encourages how the drawing and words work together to make a great book. Children will enjoy the banter between the two. A book book to use when talking about writing a story.
This book shows how an author and illustrator might work together to make the illustrations and characters match the authors visions for their story. It was a bit tricky to know what order to read the speech bubbles in. Kids will probably enjoy the craziness of the dialogue and illustrations and the ice cream super hero theme.
An author has a great idea, and the illustrator is ready to add the visual details to make the story sprinkle--I mean sparkle. But when his opinions diverge, it's all out battle for the right to tell this epic ice cream adventure: author vs illustrator.
I'm pretty sure anyone who's ever worked on a team with other creative people can relate to this book. Sometimes all the ideas are good, but they don't necessarily all work together, This book would be a lot of fun as an introduction to group projects in elementary school, but it's also a fun and silly story that I'd recommend to anyone with an interest in writing or illustrating.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
When reading to young kid groups I always point out who the author and illustrator are. This is a fun book to really show the different roles. It would be fun to follow up with a teamwork activity.
I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I am making a mental list of the kids that I know who are going to LOVE this book. It has superheroes, monsters, beasts, and junk food! Teachers are going to love it, too! It is chock full of lessons on prewriting, collaboration, word choice, revision, and the role of the illustrator and the author. When you get this book, you better get at least two. One is not going to be enough.
I actually love this book. It’s friendly, funny, and educational for kids. It’s a story within a story that makes it even funnier to me.Good stuff!
I thought the artwork was super cute! The idea behind the story of having the characters “teach us” about how a book was written was very clever. Normally I’m not a fan of comic book type writing but for this story it worked and didn’t distract me from the storyline. I would definitely pick this up based on the cover and the title and read it to my kids!
This children’s book was very fun and definitely exciting for kids to read. The illustrations were great and really added to the story. The plot of battling an illustrator is fun and kids will appreciate the drawing aspect and identify with the characters. this book is super fun and I can definitely see this becoming a series with the main characters returning!
This book provided a fun way to look at the process of working as a team. The roles of author and illustrator have their own challenges, as does the task of working together to create a book. Clever illustrations and a cute story that grew in response to illustrations and more food! As someone who can’t illustrate I could relate to the situation as it developed and enjoyed seeing how the difficulties were resolved.
Very clever story within a story that will keep young readers entertained! It's an easy introduction on defining the roles of writers and illustrators for readers of all ages. It's done in a humorous way too!
Super fun read!
An author and an illustrator collaborating on a story find that the conflict between words and pictures that aren't in agreement can make the story much less fun. They need to learn about compromise to make their story a success.
This book is a simple and funny way to teach kids about the jobs of an author and illustrator. It highlights all the different ways in which the words and pictures in a story interact and combine to make it a pleasurable experience to read. The development in both the characters and story create an engaging and relatable scene for kids, who often find themselves in a situation where they can't agree and need to come to a compromise that makes both sides happy.
3.5 stars
I've read a few battle lineup pictures books in my time, and this is a fun and fresh take that 2nd graders + will enjoy.
For a highly collaborative author & illustrator, kids will enjoy the give and take, back and forth antics of putting together a story—it will probably remind them of their own negotiations with friends and siblings.
Playful and likely to spur discussion on teamwork and creativity, I highly recommend this to teachers as they discuss the different roles of picture book creation.
Best served with chili dogs and ice cream ;-)
Author and illustrator battle it out to get their story just right. Kids will find this book silly and engaging and parents, teachers, and librarians can use it to focus on elements of storytelling and collaboration. It may default to clichés one time too often but it is a mostly fresh take on working together to create a picture book.
This story was fun and imaginative. I liked the teamwork between the two friends even when they disagreed. The illustrations are fun and helped to make the story better. The story was short and perfect for reading to kids with short attention spans. I will be purchasing this book to add to the school library.
The book is the perfect example of how to work in a collaborative relationship between two very important entities. Author Vs Illustrator features two kids writing a graphic novel with super heroes. The writer has ideas about the writing aspect of the book and the illustrator draws his pictures as he depicts them. The author reminds his friend that the super hero, basically him, needs to be more beefy and the monster more scary. As they get into the process mid way through their novel, they begin arguing about what is important, the writing or the drawings. Writing the story, of course the author wins, without pictures makes him realize that each part of their jobs is important to the entire process in making the story much more fun and interesting.
The graphics were fun and I enjoyed the banter between the two characters. This will be a perfect read for my older elementary and middle school kids
Super cute book! This is perfect for teaching kids the difference between an author and an illustrator and why both of them are important. I hope that there are more books like this one in the future.
What a fun picture book! As a children’s book author who writes picture book historical nonfiction for children, I immensely enjoyed and empathized with the author and illustrator of this humorist book.
In my school visits, children have inquired about how a picture book comes together. My illustrator, who is also my husband, and I love to explain the process. But in this book, the author and illustrator team explain the behind-the-scenes banter that occurs as the book unfolds.
The writer has his vision of exactly what the book should look like. On the other hand, the illustrator uses creative license to imagine all the possibilities. As the illustrator works through the book page by page, there undoubtedly will be differing points of view. The author and illustrator team must overcome these differences and work as a team to create a finished product that embodies the best of both those minds. This results in a valuable life lesson for children. Teamwork, empathy, and cooperation are the qualities needed to create a successful picture book.
I enjoyed the down-to-earth humorist approach taken to make these characters fun. They speak like comic book figures in speech bubbles and come off in the end like superheroes, which are very appealing to the elementary grade reading audience. Warning! Adults will equally enjoy reading this book.
