Overdue: The Misadventure of Bob the Book is a book that will quickly be added to a cannon of books that librarians use to talk about book care. Written in a graphic novel format, students will quickly fall in love with the main character, Bob, a book who is very unhappy about being lost in the home of the last student who checked him out of the library.
I absolutely loved this book! Will purchase to read to my students about caring for their books and returning them.
Cute pictures and real life situation that I deal with every school year. Thank you NetGalley for the early read.
This book was adorable. I would definitely recommend for families with small children, or school libraries. I love it when books anthropomorphize inanimate objects.
This humorous book told from the perspective of a popular library book was such a fun read. Poor Bob, the book, finds himself borrowed by a little boy who forgets all about him. Bob is missing from the library for nearly a whole school year, but readers will not despair with the positive ending showing the joy books can bring readers. This book is a great instructional tool explaining book care and returning books on time for school librarians to read to younger students, and we plan on ordering a copy for ours.
I absolutely loved this book! It is the perfect story to read at the beginning of the school year or first day of storytime at the library. The author did a great job talking about the perils of being a library book, but still kept it light and sweet.
10/10 recommend every teacher and librarian own a copy.
📚 This is a lovely story about reading and book stewardship.
📚 Bob is the most popular book in the elementary school library! Kids love to take him home to read. One day, Bob’s journey takes an unexpected turn when he is borrowed by a boy who hasn’t learned the importance of handling books with care. This leads to Bob being misplaced and, regrettably, becoming very overdue.
📚 The book provides an engaging lesson on the significance of book care and the respect due to shared materials. It’s also an excellent resource for librarians to teach children about the responsibilities that come with borrowing books.
📚 The illustrations are humorous and add to the charm of the story.
📚 There are even some Book Care Tips at the end of the book.
📚 This story is sure to be a hit with kids, librarians, and book lovers alike, offering a blend of entertainment and a valuable lesson.
Thank you @netgalley and Capstone Editions for an eARC of this book, which I have read and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Bob the book has been abandoned by his most recent borrower from the school library. Will he ever make it back to his rightful place in circulation?
Overdue: The Misadventure of Bob the Book addresses the responsibility each student has to take care of their books in an impactful way. With beautiful illustrations, a fascinating story, and a formatting style reminiscent of a graphic novel, it has all the ingredients to draw students in and allow them to digest the themes presented. This would be an absolutely amazing story to bookend a year with students, as the lessons could serve easily as both a beginning of year explanation of how to take care of books and an end of year reminder to look for lost items and return them.
The illustrations in this book are super cute. Bob is such a fun character and it’s a good way to teach kids about keeping track of our books. The tips at the back are also really great.
The story is ok. I felt the ending didn’t make much sense. The book is so overdue, it’s many students favourite and it needs to be returned before school ends but then he’s allowed to take it out again? It didn’t seem to send the right message to me.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book.
I thought the illustrations in this book were cute, but brighter colors would have been much more exciting and eye catching. And I think the story could have been cute, but it just didn’t quite work for me. And I think a lot of kids would be bored with it.
This book is great for any school librarian! I love that it addresses so many library book issues in such a cute way. Already ordered for my library!! Can't wait to use it in September.
This was such an entertaining and clever children’s book about an all-time favorite library book at an Elementary School. The illustrations were adorable and I loved how important this book focused on how young readers should care for library books.
It shows a great appreciation on borrowed books and how to care for them, the characters were fun and a young child will absolutely adore this story.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with access to read this book!
We LOVED this book! Such a cute story about an overdue library book, and how he finds his way into the right hands. The pictures were really well done and the story flowed perfectly.
Super cute teaching lesson for kids, and it was even entertaining for us parents! We plan on buying a copy of this for at home!!
I actually got this for my son (obviously since it's a children's book lol) He loved it! He has read it multiple times and can't get enough of it! He has read it multiple nights in a row this week since first reading it! Highly recommend to read to your kiddo or for kiddos who can read on their own!
This is an adorable book about taking care of our borrowed books and the impact of reading.
It was a well received book by my daughter (8) who needed a reminder of how to properly take care of the books she borrowed from school. This would be a great teaching tool for librarians at the start of each year!
Such a cute book with fun illustrations about the importance of treating library books well and remembering to return them on time. For readers 5-9.
This is a cute book and it talks about book care at the end, which is nice, but it doesn't really have a solid message. It is told from the perspective of Bob the book, and he is checked out of the library at the beginning of the school year, just to be discarded and "lost." When the end of the year comes and it is time to bring back all overdue books, Bob is found and then he is read and appreciated. However, when he goes back to the library, the librarian asks the student if he wants to keep the book all summer. What? If I were to read this in my library, I would spend the next 10 minutes answering questions from kids about why they can't take their books home over the summer. The whole point of being overdue was needing to come back to the library. Not... keep the book all year and then keep it over the summer too.
The illustrations are cute, but as a librarian, I can't get past that mixed message that certainly doesn't apply to any school library.
What an adorable story! One classrooms favorite book; Bob the Book, beloved and borrowed by all, is taken home by a student and is not returned on time! What ensues is the story of Bob the Book wondering when he will find his way back to the classroom. A must-have for school libraries, library outreach events and class-visit storytimes. I loved the tips/best practises at the end, great for an end of story dialogue for teachers and librarians. The illustrations are fun and attention grabbing.
This was so cute!! It teaches about borrowing books and the importance of caring for borrowed books. The illustrations were the best and I really enjoyed it and would recommend it.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Bob the book is checked out of the school library and forgotten at a student’s home. Bold illustrations and graphic novel-style text boxes enhance the all-too-common story of a lost library book. It is reminiscent of characters from The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt, it is a straightforward story that is perfect for teacher librarians to use at the beginning of the school year to teach and review book care.
I loved this book! Who knew what happened to a book that got misplaced. He was so happy when the child found him and read him. The ending made my heart swell. I will be purchasing a copy for my daughter's library and recommending it to librarians I know.
