I haven't read any thrillers from AJ Campbell but I certainly will be reading more because I really enjoyed this one. From the get-go this was very fast-paced and kept my mind reeling. The main character was really interesting to follow and the other characters were pretty entertaining as well. I did like the ending twists in this and felt pretty satisfied with the ending. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was confused that on the cover of the book (then titled How Can I Trust You but now is titled My Perfect Marriage) that it seemed like Lucy was Ashley's best friend but turned out that Lucy was her husband Danny's best friend from childhood? I'm not sure if this was a mistake with editing but it made it difficult for me to fully immerse into the story until this became more clear.
This book really held my interest up until the last 20% of the book. I really had a hard time liking or even siding with the main character, Ashley, as she was so wishy washy with her feelings toward her husband. One minute she was deeply in love with her husband and would stand by his side, but the next minute she didn't even recognize the man she married and was digusted with him. They seemed to have the perfect marriage but somehow didn't have good communication skills especially when Danny came back from speaking to the police and Ashley was trying to understand what was going on.
It was also ironic that Ashley didn't like gossip and how fast news spreads in small towns, but at the same time she was diving into everything her husband owned to figure out if and what he was hiding from her. Not to mention, she was also trying to get information from people close to her husband
All in all I found the story interesting and at times enjoyed it, but it was hard for me to really connect or like most of the characters aside from Ashley's sister Susie.
Thank you to NetGalley for sending me the ARC audiobook to review.
LOVED !!!
Right up my ally. Incredible writing I was hooked Right from chapter one and have reccomended to so many people !
I will be back for more 🤩
Ashley and Danny go to their friends for a children’s birthday party, it is quite an event. Yet before long Ashley hears screams and stumbles across her friend Lucy lifeless and her husband covered in her blood.
Police arrest Danny and Ashley is full of questions. She goes in search if answers for her many questions and she uncovers a deceit of lies, but what does this mean? Is Danny a murderer?
This was a decent read, the story flowed pretty well, Ashley’s character felt a tad naive, not sure if that was on purpose or not. The ending felt like it was a little rushed.
All in all a decent read, I give this 3.5/5 rounded up to 4.
Thankyou to netgalley, the author and the publisher for allowing me to access this title.
I love AJ Campell titles so i was excited for this one and it did not disappoint!
Wow!!! What a Thriller!
I really enjoyed this audio book, I enjoyed the narration.
The twists and turns came out of nowhere that i kept rewinding to make sure I heard things correctly.
I couldn't put this one down once I started it! The bottom line is that she couldn't trust barely anyone in this book!
Highly recommend this and any title by AJ Campbell
Thank you NetGalley and Book0tour Audio for the ARC. This was a true mystery/thriller from the very beginning, and it kept me guessing until the very end. I loved everything about this audiobook! It was a storyline that grabbed my interest and it didn't disappoint. As with other AJ Campbell novels, "How Can I Trust You?" is a perfect 10, in my opinion!
Thank you so much NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook!
POV: 3rd person
Thriller Set in England featuring lies, betrayal/ secrets, murder
Narrator: Eilidh Beaton (I found Eilidh’s voice enjoyable to listen to so I will give voice narration alone 5/5)
Quick note: summary says Lucy is Ashley’s best friend, that’s not the case/ accurate representation of the story Lucy is Ashley’s husband Danny’s lifelong friend**
Overall thoughts: I wasn’t the biggest fan of the main character Ashley. I personally found it hard to relate to her or feel much for her. Character building I found kind of lacking, couldn’t root for anyone really… book moved/ builds up slowly/ avg pace and picks up in the remaining 20% of the book. I did like that I wasn’t able to entirely guess where the book was going to take me and solve the mystery so easily… I didn’t feel much suspense and the feeling of what’s going to happen next which in my opinion there was some opportunity to build up suspense in certain areas.
I would recommend and think that this book is perfect for someone who wants to listen to an audiobook while driving/ commuting to work or doing work around the house.
This is Ashley's story whos world turns upside down when her best friend is murdered. And to top it up: her husband could have done it. At least he is found covered in blood with the murder weapon in his hand, but claims that he is innocent.
Although Ashley can't believe that Danny is responsible for the murder she starts to dig deeper to find out what happened.
While listening to the beautiful Eilidh Beaton narrating this audiobook I had no idea where it was going. I kept changing my mind about who was the murderer.
Thanks #NetGalley # Bookouture for this audiobook
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a good thriller. I did not see the ending coming. I really enjoyed how the mystery was set up because I kept second guessing myself on who was behind the murders. This was a quick and gripping read.
Really enjoyed this audiobook but I did have to have a break & go back to it as found it lost my attention a bit. Nice narration just maybe a bit show for me.
*** Now titled My Perfect Marriage
Oooh, this was a twisty whodunnit! AJ’s books are always twisty and fun to read, How Can I trust You did not disappoint!
Ashely’s perfect marriage is about to crumble, when her best friend is murdered and her husband Danny is found standing over the body with a bloody hammer.
Who killed Lucy? Could her husband really be capable of murder or is there something more sinister at play? As Ashley tries to uncover the truth, she discovers hidden secrets and a slew of loose ends. She’s left with more questions than answers while she races to uncover what happened to Lucy.
Fast paced and jam packed full of mystery, intrigue secrets and betrayal - it’s another winner by AJ Campbell.
Many thanks to Bookouture Bookouture Audio and Netgalley for advanced ARC and ALC
The audio narrated by Eilidh Beaton was brilliantly executed.
This is a gripping and emotional thriller that delives into themse of trust and betrayal.
It kept me on the edge and I did not expect the ending.
Highlly recommend it, but not last I would like to thank NetGalley, the author and the publisher for offering me a copy of this, in exchange for my honest review.
Ashley and her family are at her best friend Lucy's house for her son's birthday party when Ashley walks into the garage to find Lucy on the floor covered in blood. What makes the situation worse is that Ashley's husband, Danny, is standing over her body with a hammer. Ashley can't begin to fathom that her best friend is gone and that her husband is the main suspect. Ashley wants to gather the facts before outright supporting or defending her husband. As she starts to dig, She uncovers that Lucy and Danny had a more involved relationship than either of them were letting on. Her entire world is thrown upside down and she needs to figure out what Danny was involved in and how much she can trust him.
I really like that this book is not the typical trope of a husband and best friend having a relationship behind the wife's back. There was so much to unravel and I couldn't have guessed the direction that this book would take. The book starts of very quickly and keeps you suspicious of everyone until the end. It was fantastic.
There was a good plot twist with enough suspence that it kept me captivated. I really enjoyed the story telling. The narrator did a great job.
Wow!!! What a Thriller! Kept me engaged and not wanting to pause this audio book! Twists and turns that you didn't see coming and a even crazier ending! Highly recommend!
I really enjoyed this audio book, I enjoyed the narration.
There were so many twists and turns and I felt a great deal of empathy for the main character, Ashley.
When Ashley as her husband Danny attend a child's birthday party the host Lucy ends up dead. Danny is quickly arrested and this follows the events that follow, is he or is he not guilty? This book takes you on a roller coaster of a journey, you just never know what is going to happen next.
This is the first title I have listened to by this author and look forward to reading more of their work.
How Can I Trust You is a fast and very enjoyable read. A solid 3.5 star! While somewhat predictable, it nevertheless holds your attention and keeps you flipping pages or listening "just one more chapter"until the very end. Ashley's choices throughout the book could be questioned, but wouldn't we all be stressed with our husband accused of murdering a friend and trying to protect your child? This book would be great for someone new to thriller books or is looking for a fast paced read for vacation. Ceilidh Beaton's narration was incredible, per usual, and brought you so much in each character. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture Audio and AJ Campbell for giving me the opportunity to listen and review this audiobook. I look forward to reading future publications by AJ Campbell.
How well can you truly ever know someone? That is the question that’s haunting Ashley. Is the love of her life a murderer? Could the father of her child actually be a cold-hearted killer? I was completely immersed in her pursuit of the truth. My heart went out to her and her son Elliot as the plot unfolded. At times I questioned her actions, but I was always intrigued by the outcome. Eilidh Beaton’s narration masterfully brings each character to life while adding intensity and emotion. The shocking conclusion had me on the edge of my seat. Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for my audiobook.
Absolutely loved the storyline and twists in this book! I almost wish I had read the book instead of listening because the narrator’s voice was a bit irritating, but again, loved the story!
How Can I Trust You? by AJ Campbell was an amazing book to listen to. It twisted and turned with so many surprises that I kept rewinding to make sure I heard things correctly. If you want a wild ride of a book, definitely pick this one up!
