Thank you to NetGalley and Viking for the advanced readers copy of Someone In The Attic.
This is my first book written by Andrea Mara and will not be my last. This one grabs ahold of you right from the very start. For me, it was a slow burn thriller that is so worth it! This one will keep you guessing and trying to figure out who is in the attic. Heck, it may have you checking your own attic in the middle of the night...
Thank you so much to Viking/Pamela Dorman Books for the ARC!
WOW- I absolutely loved this one. I decided to pick it up based on the cover alone and I'm so glad I did! The story starts out with a BANG- my jaw was on the floor from the first chapter!
This mystery had so much drama, so many layers and SO many twists and turns. I love it when instead of one major twist, the reader is given many along the way! I didn't trust any of these characters and I had NO idea how this would end!
Andrea Mara definitely did an incredible job building suspense along the way. The pacing was great, I was never bored, and I loved the ending!
I highly highly recommend this one, especially for fans of NIGHTWATCHING by Tracy Sierra!
I don't know how this is the first book I've read by Andrea, but her other books have INCREDIBLE ratings on GR, so I'll definitely be binging her backlist books and on the lookout for what she puts out in the future.
This will be available on August 20th!
Creepy. Creepy. Creepy! Bumps in the night. A wild story about a young friends group years later when they all have their separate lives except the one who died those years ago. And then a second one dies. Oof. Is it some creepy internet freak or someone from their past? I flew through this one- couldnโt put it down!
A psychological thriller perfect for fans of Freida Mcfadden, Rachel Hawkins, and Lucy Foley. There has been a recent surge of women thriller authors and patrons at my library can't get enough of them. I will definitely be recommending this one to them.
Thank you to Netgalley and Pamela Dorman Books for providing me with a review copy.
This was the first book I've ever ready by Andrea Martin however I know going forward that she is going to be an author I will keep my eyes on. The plot of this book was amazing and left me wanting more after every word. I couldn't get enough and this was a story I had to get to the end but I never wanted to end at the same time. It was a very fast paced story but it still managed to put in all of the necessary details for the plot and characters to come alive. When our main character Julia is shown a video of a masked man in her own home she is a little freaked out but this has to be a prank right, this can't possibly be real. Julia is determined to get to the bottom of this and as a reader so was I. Our story continues to evolve quickly as we get lots of possible leads and it was great seeing how things were turning out and how they were linked to Julia's past. There was a slight time jump which I normally don't like however it really showed the reader how Julia's past was connected to her current drama. The author did a great job of keeping both mysteries alive in the past and present as well as clearly defining which era we are readers were in which is sometimes hard to to especially with such a complicated story line to bein with. I loved this book because it exploded right into the plot right off the bat without to much unnecessary information. This gave the reader lots of time to go back and forth on their guess. What I loved the most though was the fact that we got to see the whole thing through Julia's point of view as she got to the bottom of things. This book was amazing and left the reader with lots of questions all throughout. I loved the plot as it was nothing like I have ever read before, and Andrea Martin did a great job of pulling the reader into her world. This is one thriller that you won't forget and one that everyone needs to read. However I suggest reading with the lights on because the eerie story line is one that will leave you looking over your shoulder at every sound. With so many red herrings it was a blast trying to decifer everything. I couldn't get enough of this story and I was so sad when it finally ended. The ending was amazing and the perfect wrap up to a thriller that keep me guessing throughout. Great read and I cannot wait to read more by Andrea Mara in the future.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my e-ARC of Someone in the Attic!

You thought you were home alone.
Anya is enjoying a relaxing bath when she hears a noise coming from the ceiling. Through the open bathroom door, she sees the attic hatch swing down, and a masked figure drops to the floor. Thirty seconds later, Anya is dead.
You're not afraid of being alone in the dark. You're afraid you're not alone.
Across town, Anya's old school friend, Julia, sees an online video of a masked figure climbing out of an attic. She suddenly realizes why the footage is eerily familiar: it was filmed inside her own house in a luxury gated community, designed to keep intruders out.
And now your worst fears are coming true.
Why would a stranger target Julia? Unless of course, it's not a stranger at all.

This was a really fun that had me guessing the whole time through. The opening was absolutely wild, and completely unexpected for me, but it really set the tone for the rest of the story. I was happy to have Juliaโs POV because I didnโt like Anya from the very start. I was really shocked by who the someone turned out to be, too. As first I believed I had it all figured out, but turns out the author was definitely smarter than I was! Overall, I loved everything about this story, especially the final twist, as that one was most definitely the most heinous.
Tik-Tok challenges are all the rage right now. You can't go on social media without someone posting about a challenge that they spotted on there and joining in on all the "fun". What happens when a Tok Tok challenge goes too far and someone is filming videos inside of your house? Is it just a challenge? Or something more sinister?
This book started off great. A woman relaxing with a glass of wine and a magazine in a steaming hot bath. Then as she closes her eyes to find peace, someone lowers themselves down from her attic and offs her. There's no other way to start off a book like this.
Then it happens and I almost said goodnight to this book but I pushed through and was disappointed. The ending was one you'll definitely see if you pay close enough attention. It smacked me right in the face as I was reading. I kept telling myself that it couldn't be that and it really was. Not fun at all.
The characters were kind of bland. It was hard for me to feel that personal connection with any of them, so I think that was why this book didn't appeal to me. The mystery didn't hit me like others have and I think that had to do with me figuring this out very early on. Then there were the twists but let's not go there.
Someone in the Attic was an okay read but really wasn't for me. I love dark and disturbing mysteries but this one didn't fit into those categories for me. I think others will find this mysterious and disturbing. It just wasn't for me.
Three friends have a reunion and it seems that someone has some revenge in kid for them. It all revolves around this โLoft Crazeโ a spooky thing on Tik Tok. As the story progresses the girls must figure out who had it in for them and why. Will they all survive and why is someone doing this? The answers are juicy and twisty.
A spooky read. Do you have someone living in your attic? You will never guess who's living in their attic. I never saw the end coming!
Thank you NetGallery, author,Andrea Mara, publisher,Penguin Group for the opportunity to read the ebook,Someone in the Attic. It was an interesting premise, which had been done before in books/movies and even in true events but this had a different twist. It was a very calculated revenge story that had me trying to guess who the โsomeoneโ was up to almost the very end. I would have given it five stars but it was a bit too long and needed more editing instead of areas of repetition where a summary was given and not needed.

While Andrea Mara is one of my favorite authors, this particular book wasnโt my favorite. The short chapters and affluent setting arenโt her usual thing. I also didnโt enjoy the heavy emphasis on puzzle/red herrings/rapid twists as that isnโt what I come to her books for.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Someone in the Attic.
The premise was so creepy, like the "The prank call was traced. It's coming from inside your house!"
I've never read this author before so I went into this with an open mind.
Julia has moved from the US back to Ireland after a troubling incident involving her daughter's friend at school.
As she and her family adjusts to their new life, her childhood Anya is discovered dead after an accidental mishap.
Events escalate when Julia sees an online video of a masked figure climbing out of an attic. Her attic.
When Julia discovers these online videos are linked to Anya, she starts her own investigation as to who may be posting these videos. Perhaps it's all linked to the death of her childhood BFF? Or something to do with her job?
Whatever it is, Julia needs to find out soon before she ends up like Anya.
You'll find the popular tropes used in all genres; the frenemy Anya that everyone kinda, sorta like only because they're scared of her. A secret the women share from their past.
There's a lot going on; a noisy neighbor, a neighbor's husband disappears, Julia's ex-husband suddenly becomes secretive and furtive, and the reasons behind the family's big move overseas.
Surprise, surprise, I guessed most of the twists.
It wasn't hard to figure out whodunnit, though the author did try to make Julia appear unreliable and/or gaslit.
The writing was fine, and the pacing okay, though it dragged from Julia's son's perspective and read as filler.
I did like how Julia's friend comes to her rescue, and they make amends with their deceased friend's family.
"Someone in the Attic" has such a great, creepy premise -- that someone is living in your attic, taking videos of your home (and you) when you aren't looking. This is a slow burn mystery with many twists, turns and a satisfying ending. Recommended for suspense and thriller lovers who prefer characters over gore. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC. This was a treat to read!

I absolutely devoured this book! It was creepy and disconcerting. Someone hiding in your attic is nightmare fodder. I really enjoyed the main character Julia, all of the characters were pretty fleshed out. I thought I knew who the bad guy was and I was completely wrong. Five Stars all around!!
The beginning of this book was something right out my nightmares. I think everyone at some point has heard strange sounds in their house and chalked it up to "house settling" noises because that's so much better to accept than the alternative. Anya is relaxing in a hot bath when she hears the noise. Then, the unthinkable...a masked figure standing silently in the doorway. Thirty seconds later, she is dead.
Abruptly, the narrative switches to another woman, Julia, an old schoolmate of Anya's who has moved from California to Ireland for reasons that are only hinted at initially; all we know is that it's because of something that happened with her young teen daughter. Coincidentally, it's her daughter who is on TikTok and shows Julia some creepy trending videos of a masked figure climbing out of an attic. As Julie watches in horror, she realizes that the footage was filmed INSIDE her house--her house that's in a gated community. And that's when things simultaneously lag and take off.
The attic storyline takes a backseat to explore several other sub-plots, that while integral to the story, often had me feeling impatient as I needed to know what was going on in that attic! Throw in Julia's ex Gabe, who is definitely hiding something, the neighbor who is a little too eager to insinuate himself into Julia's life, and what exactly happened with Julia's daughter back home, and you've got a pulse pounding thriller that taps into one of our deepest fears. This was my first read by this author, and I can't wait to explore her backlist. Thank you to NetGalley and Viking/Pamela Dorman Books for the early copy. This book will release August 20, 2024.
This book was hard to put down! I loved the setting, the characters, the twists and turns. Will be recommending this summer as a great beach read.
