My Favorite Terrible Thing 3.5
A perfect example of parasocial relationships and how fans can sometimes think that they know everything about their favorite authors.
Once I reached the middle of the book, there were constantly more twists getting added. The beginning of the book was a bit slower for me up until that point, but after I was constantly on my toes.
Thank you Netgalley for letting me listen to this audio ARC.
This is so hard for me to rate. I finished this book in one day. I couldn’t put it down. But. But. I don’t know. The second half kinda went off the rails. It wasn’t what I was expecting which is good because I like to be surprised but I also just don’t know if I liked the direction it went? It did a great job at being unexpected and twisty and really throwing the reader for a loop. But I kind of lost interest in the second half. While I was curious where it was going and I had to find out. I just ultimately didn’t like the direction it went. It just fizzled out for me.
The narration however was well done. I love this narrator so it was a great listen
It was a good story I mean the plot drew me An author who writes about true love goes missing on her wedding day 😳 yes immediately wants to read more!
The story follows Nina a private investigator is looking into her disappearance.
I was expecting it to be a typical missing person book but quickly turned a different way to avoid spoilers I can’t say much else. But it was very interesting and kept me listening to see what was happening.
I loved that Blue willow book shop is mentioned an Indi bookstore in Houston.

The narrator did an amazing job.
My Favorite Terrible Thing was not my favorite thing, but it wasn’t terrible either. It started out as a compelling mystery but it quickly turned in a different- and in my opinion, less well written- direction. Still a decent twisty beach read if that’s what you’re in the mood for.
Angela Dawe did an excellent job narrating the audiobook.
Thank you Madeleine Henry, Brilliance Audio, and NetGalley for providing this ARC for review consideration. All opinions expressed are my own.

My Favorite Terrible Thing is a singular POV story following Nina, a private detective as she attempts to solve a missing persons case of a beloved author, Claire Ross. Right from the start I was super hooked to this story, I needed to know what has happened to Claire. This one is different, twisty, suspenseful and filled with drama. There is an epistolary format to this one where in the beginning of the chapters you read snippets from Claire’s book and there is also a website forum where users try to band together to post how to find Claire.

As the story progresses, I found myself questioning a lot of the characters and really didn’t see the twist that was dropped about midway through. I was really interested in this turn, as I found it to be different. The pacing is pretty steady throughout and I found this one to maintain my attention throughout. I absolutely loved the ending - it was intense and was perfection, but the epilogue had me a bit confused. I think I may have missed something to be left a bit confused? Overall this was a great read!

I was able to listen to this one on audiobook and found it to be super easy to get into and loved how Angela Dawe narrated this one. The only critique I have about the audiobook is the website part was maybe a smidge difficult to follow, I definitely got the gist of it, but that is the only part that would benefit form having a hard copy of the book. If you are an audiobook fan and looking for something fun to get lost in for a few hours - this one is good!

My Favorite Terrible Thing releases on 5/1. Highly recommend you check this one out. Huge thank you to NetGalley, Madeleine Henry and Brilliance Publishing for the ALC in exchange for my honest review!
Thank you, NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing for access to this audiobook. Let me start by saying I really enjoyed this narrator. The part played of Sister Keira was fantastic and the suspense and excitement the narrator portrayed. was so engaging and fun. This was my first book from this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it . I wasn’t very fond of both of the main characters Nina and Claire, but I loved the twist and turns throughout this book, I would recommend this book because it held my attention and had many exciting parts throughout. I highly recommend the narrator who did such an amazing job. !
Well this was... strange.
Not what I expected at all.
I struggled to finish through a better part of this but I pushed through.
I liked the narrator a lot.
Huge thanks to NetGalley for this arc!
I could see where this one was going from early on, which made me disappointed. The writing is great! Very gripping… but I just wish the direction it went was different.
Looking at this book for what it is and not what I wanted it to be, it was incredibly engaging. We have a woman, Nina who is a pseudo PI, working for people who appreciate discretion. The case she is working on now could totally put her on the map… RED FLAG.
Famous author Claire Ross goes missing just before her wedding and her mother hires Nina to help find her. Nina knows all about Claire, with her epic romance novel being her favorite book. She feels she has a unique connection and can find Claire!
I didn’t like Nina. I didn’t like Claire. But the ways in which this book twists and turns was kind of fun. I saw how it was going to play out, but objectively it was enjoyable.
Audiobook specific, this was narrated fabulously. The desperation the narrater projects was perfection. Very unsettling.
As I sit down to write this review I don't even know where to start if I'm being honest. I thought this was going to a typical missing person book with a female detective that will stop at nothing to find them. Even though this was that.. it was so much more & twisted & turned in ways I did not see coming at ALL.
An insanely famous author goes missing on her wedding day & no one knows what has happened to her. Nina Travers is a PI in the Hamptons & is hired for the job after local police turn up nothing. With crazed fans & a desperate family, will Nina be able to find Claire Ross? Or is it too late?
I'm still a bit in shock from this one. There were many moments where it stopped me in my tracks & my mouth just hung open. I was impressed!
Thank you so much NetGalley, Brilliance Publishing, & Madeleine Henry for this ARC in exchange for an honest review
There’s a lot to love about this book. Missing author Claire Ross is adored by thousands, and when I say adored I mean obsessed! The book includes Reddit forums revealing how fans constantly stalk her!
Private Investigator Nina is referred to the family after police have no leads. She has “unusual” ways of working, including moving in with the family
Half way in and Nina gets a lead that she chases without informing the family… this is when things get crazy weird
I’ve read reviews and some readers don’t like the tangent the book goes down - I’m still unsure how I feel
I liked that the missing authors book was woven into the story. I liked that the reveals and twists were unique and untraditional

Nina could be referred to as an unreliable narrator, but that’s not quite right…. It was more that I had an opinion about her and I wasn’t convinced by the resolution, so I was left feeling unsatisfied. I can’t say more without spoilers
I do recommend the book, especially the audio as the narrator did a wonderful job, especially as sister Kiera - hilarious!
