Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!
I have generally enjoyed this series and the latest installment. The world intrigues me and keeps me engaged and I like the multi POVs the author works with.
This did suffer from a bit of middle book syndrome, feeling like there was both too much and not enough at once. But I’m still looking forward to the final installment.
4.5 stars, rounded up to 5
I’m absolutely loving this series. It’s like a mash up of Harry Potter, Twilight, Princess Diaries, and Bridgerton and I’m here for it. I *did* think this was a duology but that is obviously not the case because of the major cliffhanger ending, very excited for the next book 👏🏼
Tropes: enemies to lovers, he takes care of her, only one bed, forced proximity, forbidden magic, cliffhanger ending
Content: 1 heated kissing scene, death of parent, death
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher, and the author for this advanced copy in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.
I have been dying to read this ever since I finished House of Marionne, and it did not disappoint. Shadows of Perl picks up where the last one left off, Quell is on the run with Yagrin (who is disguised as Octos and just so happens to be Jordan’s brother) after choosing to defy the Order and bond with her dark magic, toushana. Jordan has to deal with his conflicting emotions, his love for both Quell and his brother warring with his sense of duty. The absolutely best surprise ever, this book has three POVs, Quell, Jordan, and Nore-- the heir to the House of Ambrose.
Alright, now to my thoughts… I really enjoyed this book. The extra POVs were amazing, they allowed the story to grow and made the book even more enjoyable than the first. Quell, Jordan, and Nore were more fleshed out in this book, and reading each of them deal with their own troubles and mature in their own ways was great. While I loved seeing these three, I’m reallllyyyy hoping Yagrin gets his own POV in the next book, I mean come on, this guy deserves it. That aside, I loved what the author did with the characters.
I was actually surprised at how entertaining this book was. The middle book of a trilogy has a tendency to be a build-up for the big conflict in the third book, and while there was definitely some of that, the book had a story that drew me in. The author did a great job of expanding and explaining more of the world than the first book. While I loved the first book, I had some serious questions about the Houses and the magic system but this book answered a lot of those questions, and I felt like I understood the world a lot better after finishing it.
Okay, before I spoil anything with my rambling I will end with my final thoughts…love love loved it and I absolutely cannot wait for the final installment.
Unfortunately I DNF'ed the first book at twenty-six percent so I will not be continuing the series. I did get a really nice copy of the first book for Goldsboro but it just felt like something I had already read before and I was not connecting with the characters or the story.
thanks to netgalley & razorbill for the free earc in exchange for a fair and honest review!
this was a solid continuation of the plot of the first book. the first third was a little slow, but gradually picked up and become very enjoyable. i love quell and think her storyline is very interesting. i hope characters are more fleshed out later on if the author decides to write a third, as some felt somewhat flat and monotonous.
read this if you like ya fantasy, feuding brothers, and magic.
Shadows of Perl was beautifully complex. It was an intricate weaving of shadow and light amidst elegant world building. It most definitely did not suffer from book 2 syndrome. It was compulsive and surprising.
The characters continued to grow and change. Alliances were formed and broken. Lines were drawn. Loyalties were tested. The multiple points of view actually mattered and were very well differentiated.
The plot thickened in a gracefully, sumptuous way. There were twists and turns galore. There was unpredictability and excitement around every corner. I got Netflix Winx Saga vibes, and I was ultimately satisfied, and left wanting more at the same time!
Make sure you pre-order this beauty!
Thanks Penguin Teen for the e-ARC!
This book had me gripped from go. Takes places right after the events of book 1. The many players involved in this story kept me guessing all the way through. I couldn't put this down. Fantastic story
3.5 stars
I received a copy through NetGalley for review.
Initially I was really excited to get this one, the first book I absolutely loved. But for some reason I really struggled to get through this. And while finally, finally at the end we got there, but it felt like there was a lot that maybe we didn't really need in the mix. Felt a smidge clunky for some reason.
Quell is on the run, after binding herself to her magic, Toushanna. Cloaking her dark diadem from others, or it would be in instant give away just what kind of potentially destructive power she is wielding. All she wants to do is find her mother and reunite, and leave this world forever.
And she finds herself being used and betrayed at every turn, even by those who seemingly wish to help her. The Headmistresses of the Houses are out for themselves and the power The Sphere even in its declining state could mean for them. Who can steal or stabilize it for their house?
If they fail to contain the power within, magic is gone forever.
Both Quell, Jordan, Nore, Yagrin all are wracked with their own set of problems and guilt. Guilt for what the order makes them do to each other, for the way they were raised, betrayed in turn by the people they want to be admired by. Eliminating any unmarked people who happen to witness them. Nore finds out exactly what her house requires to inherit it. People who both love and hate each other in equal measure.
Will magic survive? Or will someone get there first?
House of Marionne's sequel promises a thrilling continuation of the magical world, packed with forbidden magic, shocking revelations, and star-crossed lovers forced to become enemies.
Fans of popular fantasy authors like Stephanie Garber, Leigh Bardugo, and Alex Aster are likely to find themselves drawn to this world. The book has a darker tone compared to the first book, with Quell grappling with the consequences of her powers and the search for her mother leading her down a perilous path.
Key elements
Intensifying Plot: Quell's explosive magic has shaken the magical world, unearthing secrets and leaving her ostracized.
Love and Loss: Quell's quest for belonging and her search for her mother come at the cost of a fractured relationship with Jordan.
Duality and Conflict: Quell finds acceptance within House Perl, but hidden truths persist. Jordan, tasked with protecting magic, finds himself
facing a difficult choice – his duty versus Quell, the wielder of forbidden magic.
High Stakes: The blurb emphasizes the cracking Sphere, a brewing war, and the potential destruction of the magical world. Quell and Jordan's choices will determine the future.
If you're looking for a fantasy novel with:
Enemies-to-lovers trope with a tragic twist
A world brimming with magical houses and secrets
A high-stakes plot with the fate of magic hanging in the balance
Then this sequel to House of Marionne might be a captivating read for you.
It took me a little bit to get back into this series (I couldn't remember who Nore was) but it was a decent continuation of the first novel. I'm looking forward to finding out how everything wraps up in the last one.
Kindly received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Big thank you NetGalley and to the publisher for the chance to review this book pre-release. Shadows of Perl was an AMAZING jump back into the Quell's world, and this time, an adventure. I will admit, it took me a good minute to get back into it, especially since we're thrown two POV's, but once you're about 10-11 chapters in (20%), I was re-hooked. I loved the farther expansion on the lore we were given a glimpse of in the first book, and we really got to see more of the other characters thoughts and motives this time around too. All in all, I really loved it. A more formal review will be available on my IG/TikTok and Goodreads.
I was given this book by the publisher in return for an honest review.
We continue to learn the truths about the magical world and the forbidden toushanna that Quell has accepted. Still trying to figure out what to do with herself after her "failed" cotillion, Quell is on a quest to find her mother. But no one in her life is who or what they seem. For someone unlikely to trust it seems her choices are always questionable.
After being betrayed by those closest to her Quell turns to someone that should be the least likely to help. But are their motives pure?
Will the sphere contain magic? Or will it fade into oblivion.
We continue to watch our main characters growth. While throwing in a third for a different perspective. The secrets of the magical world continue to unravel and even the most honorable seem to be swayed.
I cannot wait to continue reading this series. I am really enjoying it! Definitely a favorite read so far this year!
Thank you to NetGallery, Penguin/Razorbill, and the author for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
I was once again swept away into the dazzling world of the Houses of the Order hidden within the modern world in this YA romantic fantasy sequel filled with magic, betrayal, and secrets. The story continues with 3 POVs that flowed effortlessly. There are two intersecting storylines that merge beautifully at the end of this book into a heart-pounding battle and a jaw-dropping ending leaving me highly anticipating the final book of this planned trilogy!
The highlight of this sequel for me was the character arcs for Quell and Jordan. They both mature so much throughout this book and start making decisions for who they are and want to be as a person instead of who others and their respective Houses think they need to be. Quell is a force to be reckoned with when she knows what she wants, and I enjoyed watching her allow herself to be both vulnerable and fierce. Jordan’s inner battle between his duty and his heart was something we can all relate to and was portrayed flawlessly. The little flashbacks we get helped to understand why he made certain decisions even though I was screaming at him in my head!
I was on the edge of my seat between the mysteries revealed, House secrets uncovered, the race to find the Sphere (source of all magic), the battles within and among the Houses, and the tension between Jordan and Quell. I enjoyed so many of the side characters (Yagrin, Nore, Adola) and loved all the twists and turns the plot took along the way. I’m excited for the final book to come and would recommend this series for my YA fantasy romance readers!
**I highly suggest re-reading the ending (possibly even skimming all of Part 5) and the Appendix of House of Marionne before starting this one if it’s been awhile since reading, otherwise I think the beginning will be slightly confusing. There are good recaps throughout the first few chapters, but I think without a quick refresh the beginning could seem more confusing and not pull the reader into the story as quickly.
4.25/5
Mysterious, roller coaster of events. It brings in 2 new povs which is amazing I love a good multi POV book. The events in this book aren't as gripping as book one but it seems to be a building up and laying a foundation for an exciting 3rd book! Quell and Jordan and how book 1 ended leave you wanting more in book 2 and it brings the tension needed for their relationship. I did get a bit bored because it is a lot more information about the houses and the people. But overall loved this book and recommend this series.
Thank you NetGalley and Razorbill for the opportunity to read this e-arc.
Wow! Just wow! This picked right up where book 1 ended. I was scared that I wouldn't like this as much as I liked book 1 but this was amazing! This sequel was what I needed after being left hanging in book 1. Usually the second book in a series isn't as good as the first but that's not the case here! I absolutely loved this book!
Thank you Penguin team, Razorbill and Netgalley, for approving my 3rd ARC ever. I still find myself shocked at this opportunity.
I read this book in about 3 days and I have to say this sequel blew me away, the issues that I had with the first book where it felt like there was a lack of description for the characters or a lack of a supporting cast was not present here. There was so much more detail (or maybe I was just used to the way the author describes the characters, clothing, and architecure), but there was definitely more of a supporting cast of characters for our leads to bounce off which I appreciated because it didn't make the world feel small like it sometimes felt in House of Marionne. It also felt like Quell was actually interacting with the world and effecting it instead of the world only effecting Quell.
I appreciated having Jordan's POV in the sequel, in my previous review for House of Marionne I stated that Jordan was the second best written character, but to be honest, I think it was actually Yagrin who was the second best written for House of Marionne, but for Shadows of Perl Jordan is definitely the second best written character and is competing against Quell for first place. I think anybody who didn't feel like Jordan was much of a character or believed he was one dimensional would come with a different opinion after reading this book. Even as someone who liked Jordan in the first book, getting a chance to be in his head, learning how he thinks, how he feels, learning his backstory, made his character so much better.
The third POV, who is kind of revealed to be someone that we are sort of familiar with was definitely a surprise, and one of the things that I loved about that POV was learning more about of House Ambrose which I have to say is one of my favorite Houses for it's uniqueness and their version of a debutante and debutante culture. And I think that's what I appreciated about this book in general was learning the backstory on the world, but also on Draguns, House of Perl, and House of Ambrose.
I hope that we get to learn more about House Oralia, since they seem to be a House that doesn't really involve themselves in the politics of everything else, we were promised grey characters, so I'm sure they're hiding something as well. I also hope that we can somehow learn even more about House of Marionne because it seems the other Houses have their own distinct activities or traditions, what with Perl and the pins and Ambrose and their emphasis on intelligence and knowledge. And I'm sure House Oralia has things that focus on creativity that sets them apart from other Houses and so I would love to know what traditions House of Marionne has that makes it different others, which after the fallout of the first book and the things that happened in this book, we may never know.
This world is so unique and I am dreading the fact that it ends with the next book, I wish we could have more time in this world and yet I have to wonder after the events that took place in this book is wrapped up, what more could happen, if possible I would love to see it. As for any negatives, I wish Quell and Yagrin got to interact more, but that's not really a negative, it's more of a want.
My enjoyment was high, I have nothing to critique, this was truly a 5 star book. Thank you again Penguin team, Razorbill and Netgally for this opportunity.
This is the second book in the series, and it was overall enjoyable. It takes a bit to get back in to the world, but worth it once you do.
This is a great sequel to the first book, and boy, does it end on a cliffhanager to make you beg for the next one again!
I highly recommend refreshing your memory on her story if you need to prior to reading this just to make things fully flow.
Overall, I love this series so much and look forward to rereading the finished book.
I really enjoyed this book. It is a continuation of the series and I really enjoyed it. I really loved the world that this book was set in. I would highly recommend this book!
This was an amazing second book in the House of Marionne! It continues with Quell leaving the House of Marionne for the House of Perl, who accept her as she is. However, every house has its secrets. Meanwhile the guy she started falling for, Jordan, is now hunting her in order to protect the Sphere, which Quell can destroy. These lovers turned enemies was sad and heartbreaking as they work against each other. Quell continues to look for her mother at the same time. I loved House of Marionne, and this book definitely did not disappoint!
