When Grace is asked to track down her client's missing twin sister, she finds that the clinic supposedly helping addicts rebuild their lives actually has a very different agenda...
Fast-paced and very tense; the main characters at the detective agency are all strong (and there's a wonderful dog!; and although it's the third in the series Jackie catches you up very quickly with what's gone on before. The descriptions of the city are wonderful, too.
Thoroughly good read.
I have to say this is one of my favourite series, the characters are wholesome and not horrible, well, of course there’s one exception, Julie, she’s a bitch, and Brodie is spineless. Coupled with the fact that Julie’s father is Brodies boss.
This time their work involves trying to find missing girls who through the hand of fate have been living rough and possibly recovering from alcohol and other substance abuse. One of them is Eliza’s twin Beth who just disappeared from the face of the earth. When Grace asks Brodie to help it looks like our police are being silenced by Big Pharma (wouldn’t be surprised) !! What follows is a brilliant, fast paced story of avarice and deceit. No-one is who they seem to be.
I read this in a day, and absolutely loved it. My thanks to Jackie, the author and Netgalley for the ARC.
This was a lovely blend of cosy mystery without things being too cosy! The storyline is dark and was the perfect compliment to the daily lives of our trio.
For me the star of the show was the characters. I really loved our three women and I would definitely tune into another book in this series purely because they were genuinely likeable and felt really fleshed out. I also think it’s worth a special mention that I feel the author juggled the multiple storylines here perfectly - the interjections of the women’s personal life was really well managed to compliment the pacing of the darker mystery at play. In fact I think I cared more about the side plots than the actual mystery itself at times - probably because there was no mystery and i felt the main plot was very predictable so the personal lives of our trio captured my interest much more.
And, here comes my only real complaint - the plot just felt a bit unbelievable for me. I like my mysteries to be tales I can really buy into and I just didn’t buy it. It was also all fairly predictable, I think I saw the outcome from the get go.
Overall, I really enjoyed this. I didn’t know this was a series going in but it didn’t matter as while I’m sure reading the earlier books would have been rewarding this definitely can stand up on it’s own.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an E-ARC
This was fantastic! Grace is asked to track down a client's missing twin sister who was in a rehab clinic but disappeared after being released. Slowly but surely Grace, Jean and Hannah discover a very dark underbelly to the practices at the clinic. A very fast paced, action filled mystery. Grace and her team are wonderful, strong characters and its great getting to know them better with each book. Hopefully there'll be many more cases for them to solve.
Thanks to Netgalley, Storm Publishing and Jackie Baldwin for a free copy in sxchange for an honest review.
whodunit story line, excellent plot and writing.... need i say more??? this is my first book from jackie baldwin, and i am intrigued to read more now!!!! 5/5 stars
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Eliza comes to Grace's office for help. Grace does a little digging and the investigation takes her to some remote area. This book kept me guessing.
A superb continuation in the most satisfying Grace McKenna series.
This one sees Grace and the PI team embroiled in a horrifying case, with plenty of twists and turns to make you gasp. It has everything you'd want to see in a well-written and well-plotted cosy crime (intriguing and developing character back stories, conflict, police corruption, and more).
The author talks in the acknowledgments at the end about what inspired her to write this particular book - well worth a look and a hard think!
Having really enjoyed the previous book, I can honestly say that the follow up is just as good. Private investigators Grace, Jean and Hannah, as well as Harvey the dog, are all back together, ready for their next case. When a woman asks them to find her twin sister, they get drawn into more than just a missing person search. Grace is an interesting character having been a police officer, her ex husband Brodie still is one, and has been helpful in previous cases she has worked. But now she is doesn’t know if she can trust him, as there appears to be police corruption involved in this new case. I’d recommend reading the previous books to get the full backgrounds and dynamics of the relationships between the main characters.
This isn’t as cozy a mystery as suggested, it’s edgier and darker than most but riveting, and with real jeopardy for the characters. Can’t wait for the next book by this author.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Thoroughly enjoyed this third book in the Grace Mckenna series. I said to my husband 'this book has an excitement problem' - the problem being that I couldn't put it down to go to sleep! And once I did, I dreamed about it, which is very unusual - high praise. Once again, I liked all the main characters, and the story was superb - original, intriguing and unpleasant enough to be gripping but not scary or upsetting. The pace cracked along and the jeopardy of poor Hannah and Grace just kept getting worse and worse, which I hadn't expected! Highly recommended!.
I didn’t realise this was the 3rd book in a series but it didn’t really matter in terms of the plot, just a little backstory which you can get the gist of anyway.
I really enjoyed this mystery story. The characters are relatable and the plot is well crafted. It’s quite short and a really easy entertaining read. I definitely plan to go back and catch up on the first 2 books now.
A Darker Mystery..
The third in the Grace McKenna mystery series and quite possibly the most precarious case yet for the Portobello Detective Agency. As the investigation for a missing person is sparked and the trail takes them to Whiteadder House, dark secrets will out. A darker mystery this time with a well drafted cast of characters, a swiftly moving and edgy plot and an atmospheric and well imagined backdrop.
Grace McKenna book 3.
Book 3 in this cosy mystery series isn't so cosy! The plot was dark and all too believable. I was up far too late finishing this. Great book.
When young, pretty Eliza Anderson walks through Grace McKenna’s door begging for help finding her missing sister, it sparks the Portobello Detective Agency’s most dangerous investigation to date.
The trail leads Grace and her team to a plush clinic nestled in Scotland’s remote wilderness. On the surface, Whiteadder House seems too good to be true, offering miracle cures and luxury comfort at no cost. But as they dig deeper, the cracks in its gleaming façade start to show.
Before long, Grace and her protégée Hannah are fighting to infiltrate Whiteadder’s inner sanctum, going undercover while racing to uncover its dark secrets. Little do they know that Whiteadder’s founders have been buying influence at the highest levels to keep prying eyes away, and this time Grace is not going to get any help from the police. Has her handsome ex-husband Brodie been compromised too?
With the facility locked down tight and a web of corruption allowing Whiteadder to operate unchecked, Grace must trust her instincts and sacrifice everything to find a way in to save her client’s sister – and, even more difficult, a way out. Then a young woman’s body is found on a nearby beach – could it be linked to the clinic? Grace knows she must find out before more lives are lost.
Fantastic story. Had me hooked from page one. I couldn't put it down. Such loveable characters, especially Harvey the dog. My first Jackie Baldwin read but I'll be reading more.
What a fantastic book. There are twists and turns. Some wonderful action. This book took me on a rollercoaster of excitement. I was hooked from the first page. The writing is amazing. I haven’t read the previous two books and I had no problem following and enjoying this book. I plan to read the first two books soon.
Murder at Whiteadder House by Jackie Baldwin, published by Storm Publishing is book three in A Grace McKenna Mystery.
A cozy mystery novel that will have you from start till the last page. I instant-connected with storyline and characters and who needs sleep anyway - I read the book cover to cover in one sitting.
