My thoughts
Narrative and Plot
Perfectly Wicked is an atmospheric book about witches with an adorable and steamy enemies-to-lovers romance. The story presents both Holly's and Connor's perspectives, which I love in romance novels. Although the book is a bit lengthy for a romance, it never lags.
The plot is rich with enough mystery to hold our interest. I enjoy when books about the supernatural break the norm and create their own worlds and rules. It’s refreshing and entertaining to explore a new order of things.
Characters and Conflicts
Holly and Connor are our central characters. They are both loyal, kind, funny, clever, and yet flawed in their own ways. The chemistry between them creates enough tension and adds to the overall mystery of the plot.
The ensemble cast is a great addition to the story, adding value and entertainment, to say the least. I would love to read a sequel about the Celeste sisters and their own love stories. Each of the side characters is well-rounded but does not overshadow the main leads. There is a morbid theme throughout the story, and I was there for it.
Most romances, no matter how strong they start, fall short in the third act of conflict. However, Perfectly Wicked strikes a perfect balance by incorporating a typical miscommunication into the final conflict and resolving it in an adult manner.
I loved the writing and would be excited to read more works by Lindsay Lovise.
Conclusion
Overall, Perfectly Wicked is a perfect fall pick, with its atmospheric setting of an apple farm and supernatural elements adding to the mix.
I was a bit worried going into this, only because our love interest Connor is intent on uncovering and exposing Holly and her sisters and what they are up to at their farm Wicked Good Apples. I'm not always a fan of that in books however I really enjoyed how this one played out. Although I do think that Connor took a little bit too long to let Holly know his plans.
I thought this was a lot of fun, I enjoyed watching Holly and Connor banter and verbally spar with each other. I liked getting learning about the history of the farm, and the origins of the ghost haunting it. The magic the sisters have is really unique and has a twist that I thought was really cool.
I liked her sisters a lot, and hope they will be getting their own books. Overall I thought this was a great book with some fun twists and a sizzling romance.
I will absolutely be reading more from this author.
I LOVED IT!
I'm a big Charmed fan, so give me a book with 3 magical sisters from a line of magical women and I am sold. While this book follows Holly, I do love that each sister is unique with their own personalities and quirks. I'm very much hoping we get more books with of them as the lead. As for Connor, I just love him(: He's protective and "alpha-wolfy" as Missy would put it and the perfect love interest. And the dual POV is everything!!
The plot is fun, witchy, and has a unique type of magic system. I don't want to spoil anything so I won't say much about it but their history is interesting! And I love the ghost hunter tv show part that perfect sets our MCs up to be enemies to lovers. The tension and chemistry between Connor and Holly is apparent from the start and builds so well!! It's a bit of a slow burn but the banter and flirtation kept me hooked. Between the magic and paranormal activity, I was getting all the perfect spooky season vibes which is exactly what I wanted!
💜enemies to lovers
💜paranormal romance
💜magic
💜ghosts/ghost hunting
💜secrets
💜forced proximity
💜spicy slow burn
💜dual POV
If you want a quick, fun, witchy romance that is perfect for spooky season add this one to your tbr! Especially for those Charmed girlies like me!!
Thank you Alcove Press and NetGalley for the eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a really solid addition to cutesy fall romcom genre. All the main characters were endearing, the mystery was engaging, and the romance was really sweet. The writing was easy to digest and the atmosphere was really well done. Holly is such a fiery and clever FMC and I thought that Connor was the perfect counterpart for her, charming and equally quick. I will say, while I loved the Holly and Connor dynamic; Winter really stole the show for me, which I think is a testament to how much love and care Lovise invested into the side characters and I would love to read her story.
I read this on my kindle during a 7 day power outage during hurricane Helene's aftermath. This was a really fun escape from everything. I really enjoyed the depiction of magic, though the sex scenes weren't quite for me.
3.5/5
This book was so much fun! With the release date, I would have loved for it to actually be set in the fall, however, I still did really enjoy it and will be recommending it for the cozy season.
The book started off incredibly strong, and I was hooked. But things started going awry in the middle. Decisions stopped making sense and new world building was kind of haphazardly thrown in without much explanation. I don't necessarily expect paranormal romances to be that deep, though, and this was all-around a good, fun read. I particularly loved the dynamic between the sisters and the developing friendship between the main character and her former rival. The romance was also very sweet. I'd happily pick up future books set in this world.
If you're looking for a somewhat spicy fall romance set in an enchanted apple orchard, this book is perfect for you. I really enjoyed parts of this book and then other parts had me scratching my head a bit. The pacing felt a bit off, with parts dragging and then other parts just feeling a bit rushed through. I wished that we got a bit more of the Wicked versus Witch information a bit earlier in the book, as it would have gotten more attention and been a bigger part of the story. It felt a bit thrown in when it was. That being said, it did have good fall vibes and I did enjoy it. I am happy I read this during the fall and I give it a 3.25/5 stars.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher Alcove Press for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions within this review are my own.
I absolutely loved this! The plot was amazing and the storyline in general was fantastic! I hope we can see more of Holly's sisters in another book if it's on the table! This was a great read for the fall and I loved it!
What a wickedly fantastic book! I read Lovise’s debut (Never Blow a Kiss), and enjoyed it, but this one is just absolutely fantastic! I was sort of expecting the typical sophomore slump, but what we have here is just pure genius! I was blown away, and it is a completely different genre than the other, which is a regency sort of spy romance novel. This is a contemporary, paranormal, witchy, ghost story with a tv show thrown in.
I enjoyed this thoroughly from the first page, far more than I ever thought I would. I figured it would be similar to a lot of the paranormal, witch romances out there - it certainly isn’t, and exceeded every other one I’ve read! The tales of the wicked Celeste Family and their haunted apple orchard have made it to the Grimm Brothers, and their series of hauntings and paranormal happenings. Connor Grimm heads to their town to check it out, interview and research this supposed ghost story and find out more about their family background and all of the odd stories over the years… and discovers so much while there.
This book is so well done - the way she’s written the whole thing, including the characters around town, the friends, the family, the not quite friends (the witchy characters that literally cannot stand being in the same room)… the entire ghost legend. It’s just perfect, plus Connor Grimm and Holly Celeste are such excellent characters, as well! Their hesitant agreement to work together, leading to friendship, leading to slow burn. It’s paced exactly right. I highly recommend this book as an easy-read (lighthearted, easy and not hard core like some others in the sub-genre), paranormal ghost story, witchy romance for Halloween season!
I received an advance copy from NetGalley and Alcove Press, and this is my honest feedback.
A pretty cute romcom. Not a lot of spice, but the spice it does have is comfortable and engaging. Not offputting with weird dialogue. The story could have been a little shorter to work better, it did seem to drag in some parts. Would have been nice to have had Winter and Missy have a romance each as well.
I really enjoyed this book from Lindsay!
I previously read her historical romance, so I was excited to dive into a contemporary romance by her, and it did not disappoint.
I really like the twist on the witch genre Lindsay uses in the book, and she did such a great job establishing the world and the rules that when the 'twist' was fully explained, it made sense, and just worked so well.
The setting was absolutely perfect - very autumn vibes, small town, apple orchard, Maine... love it. And the premise for the show production was clever and didn't feel forced.
I really hope this is the first in a series because I would love to read books about the other sisters!
Thanks to the publisher for an early eARC; all opinions are my own.
Perfectly Wicked by Lindsay Lovise is a cute fall rom-com following the lives of the Celeste family as Holly Celeste as the lead story line. Needing to keep a family secret is hard when a popular reality show about the supernatural wants to film at their family apple farm. As much as she wants to say no, the farm has had bad luck the past four years and she's desperate to do anything to help the farm so she doesn't have to sell it to her rival. Connor Grimm is handsome and a charmer with words but Holly tries to keep her distance from him emotionally because the farm and her family come first yet why does she keep feeling the need to be with him?
This was a very enjoyable read and as I got close to the end of the book, I was hoping it wouldn't end as in wait, is this a series? Will there be more? Can we find out more about the sisters and the mystery behind them? I was hoping for something at the end as a hint that their story would continue but so far, I don't think so. So Lindsay Lovise if you are reading this - I would love to read more about the Celeste family, the Grimm brothers and even her rival!
Thank you Netgalley and Alcove Press for this ARC in exchange for my honesty opinion. Thank you so much to the author, Lindsay Lovise for this read! I look forward to reading more of your books in the future! This is a book I definitely recommend.
PERFECTLY WICKED is a paranormal romance about holly, one of the women running wicked good apples, an apple orchard that's allegedly haunted, and connor, the paranormal tv show host who comes to investigate. they get off to a rocky start, but holly reluctantly agrees to let connor's show film in the orchard, hoping to drum up some business. despite being dead set on disliking him, their proximity as they interview subjects and research the history of her family leads to some unwanted feelings.
this was such a fun spooky romance and i couldn't put it down once i started it!! connor's the flavor of mmc i love best: down bad for his girl and willing to do anything that she asks. and holly was such a fantastic fmc, flawed and complex but so strong and so easy to fall for. the paranormal elements were so engaging and i loved the worldbuilding and lore behind the family's history!!
thanks to netgalley and alcove press for the advanced copy!
This was the perfect fall read! Filled with mystery, small town history, magical elements, romance and surprising spice- it truly had it all! Being a fan of the show Ghost Hunters, I loved the storyline of paranormal investigators looking into a ghost haunting at the Celeste family apple orchard. All the characters were so likable and quirky, making me smile and laugh throughout the pages. Lovise’s storytelling and had me hooked from the start and held my interest with a mix of suspenseful and sexy scenes. I highly recommend you add this magical mystery to your TBR!
4.5⭐
TV ghost hunter, Connor, meets witch, Hollywood, in this delightful story set at an allegedly haunted apple farm called Wicked Good Apples. Unfortunately, the farm's finances are so precarious, the owners, three sisters and two aunts, reluctantly agree to allowing the ghost hunters to film an episode there. Chemistry between the characters is off the charts. Lovise brings life to her characters and the book is a charming romp with a fresh take on the paranormal witchy world. Lots of fun!
I do love a good enemies to lovers romance, and before anyone says they're not really enemies, he does want to expose her family as witches and possibly ruin their lives. That counts! It has so many things that I love in it - a murder mystery, comedic moments, quirky family members, and small town vibes. Of course, in this small town, there's a bit of a darker side given that the murder mystery involves a town councilman from hundreds of years ago who may have been offed by the witch's ancestor. Not to mention that there is a whole other family who wants to buy their apple orchards from them, since they are barely scraping by and may have to leave their land. When people say small towns aren't like the cutesy Hallmark towns you see in the movies, this is likely more along the lines of reality. Although we don't get to see very much of the town or townspeople themselves, we hear enough to know that it's not all that peaceful.
Holly needed a hug so badly throughout this entire book. Feeling both proud of her orchards and burdened by efforts to keep them in the family, our girl is tired. So it doesn't help when her arch-nemesis (a.k.a. the owner of the other local orchard) tries to buy them up, and the only way to avoid that terrible fate is to accept the offer to host a film crew who wants to film the orchards as part of a paranormal investigation. Which could prove disastrous, since the truly paranormal part of the orchards is her family. What could go wrong? The main investigator, Connor, has no time for relationships and is as close to married to his job as legally possible. While he has some empathy for Holly, he is determined to find the truth about what's going on at Wicked Good Apples orchard. Forced to spend time together as part of the contract, they butt heads constantly, and while they are physically attracted to each other, there's no way anything could come of it. Connor is against relationships, since they would get in the way of his relationship with his tv show (*facepalm*). But of course, they get it on, and folks...do you like the paint sex scene between Rhysand and Feyre in the ACOTAR series? Ever want to see another version of it? Well, get to reading. And that's not even the steamiest scene. Holly and Connor can't keep their hands off each other, and when Connor finds out what Holly and her family are, his protective instincts come out in full force. I loved how he defended her from anyone who would hurt her, either physically or emotionally - very much "touch her and die" vibes. While there was some third act drama, believe me, Connor makes up for it.
This is the second time Lindsay Lovise has made it to my favorite books list, and I can already tell you it won't be the last. I can't wait to see what she writes next!
Holly Celeste and her sisters make the best apple cider in Maine but despite this, they are struggling to keep their orchard, Wicked Good Apples afloat. To save the family business, Holly accepts a proposal to let Connor Grimm, film an episode on his ghost hunting series, Grimm Reality. However, Holly is terrified that Connor will uncover the real secret they are hiding, and it doesn’t involve a ghost. She agrees on the condition that she joins Connor on all his interviews and searches. Meanwhile, Connor is determined to uncover the true story behind the many rumours about the orchard, whilst finding himself falling for the woman who has had him spellbound from the very start.
I fell in love with the characters in this book, with each so unique. It was easy to read and the romance between Holly and Connor, quite divine. The mystery behind the ghost haunting Wicked Good Apples, is cleverly unpacked between both characters, as Connor does his research. I so look forward to reading about Holly’s sisters in the new series.
This book I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I loved this one so much! PERFECT for fall! This book grabbed my attention from the first page and had me hooked the entire time! I liked the suspense about what their secret was. It was a really cool concept. l even enjoyed the little spooky moments! Also, Conner is book boyfriend material. He is the real MVP.
Highly suggest for your next fall read!
Witchy perfection. Emotion shown through the writing, there were lots of good scenes I loved. I felt like I was reading a mixed episode of Supernatural and Gilmore Girls. I really want to know if there will be a book two because there were hints and I would love to continue reading these characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and Alcove Press for providing the ARC.
This book was an interesting mix of witchy romcom, ghost story, and a cozy mystery. Connor Grimm comes to Wicked Good Apples to find a ghost and maybe something more supernatural on his bid to normalize the paranormal. What he doesn't know until he gets there is that Holly Celeste has a backbone of steel and will do everything in her power to protect her family's secret.
Connor is tenacious, and it's his thirst for the truth that endears him to the reader. They want to know as much as he does, and they don't really get that payoff until well into the story. Holly is hard on the outside with a warm gooey center. The reader can easily see why Holly is the way that she is and why someone like Connor would be immediately attracted to her. She needs someone she can be safe around and Connor is certainly up for the task.
This book was a good seasonal read - perfect for someone who wants something magical just in time for Halloween.
