Love this one. The pages were clean, all pages were fun. I really enjoyed it and look forward to more hours spent in it. It takes a bit to color a page, so keeps me busy. Worth the spend for the coloring book!
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. We would not buy this because as a library we don't want people to color our books, however it is a great coloring book.
Listen, this isn’t just a coloring book—it’s a full-on therapy session disguised as art. You think you’re just going to sit down and color a nice little tree house, but next thing you know, you’re contemplating how you, too, could live in an enchanted cottage if life had gone a little differently.
But leave it to Magical Worlds to have me questioning every shade of green I own like it’s some high-stakes art competition. Johanna Basford has done it again, and I’m convinced she’s a wizard. A very sneaky one who makes you think you’re just “relaxing” when, in fact, you’re about to spiral into the most intricate fairy-tale wonderland you’ve ever seen.
This book is like if every enchanted forest, castle, and underwater city you’ve ever dreamed of had a baby with the most detailed doodle you tried and failed to draw in school. But here’s the kicker—you get to finish them. You’re handed these beautifully intricate scenes of cozy cottages, magical treehouses, and dragons that look like they came straight out of a Disney fever dream, and then you’re like, “Okay, what color is enchanted?”
The variety? Chef’s kiss. Some days, you’re vibing with an underwater world full of cute little fish and sea creatures, and other days, you want to tackle a treehouse so detailed you’ll need an intermission just to admire your work halfway through. And then there are the cottages—so tiny and charming, you’ll find yourself wondering if you could somehow shrink yourself and move in. Spoiler: You can’t, but you can color them to perfection.
Every page feels like a mini escape, and honestly, isn’t that the point? Sure, you could meditate, or, hear me out—you could fill in an enchanted castle with seventeen shades of blue and call it “self-care.”
Final verdict: You need this book if you want to flex your creativity, escape into magical lands, or just feel like a total artistic genius without leaving your couch. I’m basically an artist now.
When I decided to get back into coloring, of course I went straight to Johanna Basford's collections of work because her intricate, whimsical artwork is simply the best! She provides coloring artists with so many wonderful illustrations. Her coloring books are always a great value because there is just so much to color here. This particular coloring book, Magical Worlds, is the perfect coloring book for lovers of fantasy and roman-tasy novels. Would make a wonderful gift!
Another hit from Johanna Basford. I really think she can do no wrong, and there is a reason she is called the “Queen of Coloring”. This coloring book focuses on fairy tale worlds and offers a lot of different imagery, everything from dragons and sea creatures, to castles and forest worlds, and even rockets and space themed pages.
One of the things I appreciate the most about this book and many of her others is the mix of complexity within the pages. There are images with a lot of intricate detail or that fill every corner of the page. There are also pages that have a handful of smaller standalone images where you could just color one at a time and fill the page across multiple sittings. And then there are options that fall somewhere in between in complexity. So there is really something for everyone and something for every mood. There are also opportunities for people who like to add their own line drawings to their coloring pages because there are plenty of pages with a lot of blank space and room for your own creativity to shine!
I loved many of the images, particularly any featuring birds wearing crowns, as well as gemstone designs. If I were to be nit-picky, I might prefer the theme to be narrowed down to be slightly more cohesive - the book as a whole did cover quite a broad range of topics. But that’s not a huge deal, just a personal preference.
All lovers of Johanna Basford and/or adult coloring books should consider picking this one up!
*Thank you to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Penguin Books for an eARC in exchange for an honest review!*
Johanna Basford makes the most magical coloring books. I have some of her early ones and I was excited to see this one is coming out soon. Flipping through it made me itch to get back into coloring, not just the coloring I do while working with students but the deep concentration that intricate coloring requires. The varying scenes mean that one will not rely too heavily on one color family such as the blues for the ocean and greens for the forest. This is a perfect, versatile coloring book and I think I need it for my collection!
A vast collection of illustrations related to fantasy for everyone to enjoy. There are similar illustrations as well as more complex illustrations for those who like more of a challenge.
The artwork of Johanna Basford kicked off the adult coloring craze. I have one of her first very detailed coloring books and it is stunning. The original copy of The Secret Garden. I have loved coloring in the pages but they are so detailed they take a lot of time. The new book by Basford, Magical Worlds, has smaller designs for quicker coloring sessions. The artwork is no less beautiful than her other books just smaller in scale and therefore quicker to complete. This book is perfect for someone who want to color for stress relief or on the weekends as a creative outlet.
