I love everything Laura Dave writes, and this book was no different. I am so grateful for NetGalley and Simon Element for this advanced reader copy. In The Night We Lost Him, estranged siblings Nora and Sam are drawn together by the mysterious death of their father, Liam Noone, a successful businessman with a hidden past. While authorities deem his death accidental, the siblings suspect otherwise. As they investigate, they uncover a family secret that has been buried for over fifty years. With a blend of suspense and emotional family drama, the story builds to a heartbreaking and unexpected final twist. This book was the perfect mystery, would highly recommend.

✨Thank you @NetGalley and @simonelement for providing me with an Advanced Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
✨Liam Noone, self-made hotel tycoon, falls to his death at his cliff-side California home. The local authorities believe the death to be an accident, but Liam’s kids have other suspicions.
✨Nora and Sam, estranged siblings, team up and chase down answers to questions that aren’t being solved by authorities.
✨With three ex-wives, an evasive brother, and potentially new business partners, Liam may have been harboring some secrets. Nora and Sam have their work cut out for them.
✨Laura Dave is such an amazing author. I’ve always enjoyed her books, and she nails family drama like no other. The tension of an on-going investigation as well as juggling family and relationship dynamics and heartbreak, this is definitely one to add to your list!

The mystery here is more of an uncovering of a father’s private past, and less about how he actually died, although that is a mystery as well. Are there romantic relationships between people that can span a lifetime, despite their other partners and obligations? A daughter sets out to uncover her father’s secrets due to the circumstances of his death. Good descriptions of atmosphere, architecture, landscapes. Decent read but not as gripping as I’d hoped.
I listened to my first novel by Laura Dave as an audiobook and loved it. I was thrilled when I had the opportunity to read the physical copy of her next novel!! The Night We Lost Him did not disappoint! I highly recommend,
This was not the page turner mystery that I was expecting as the follow up to The Last Thing He Told Me. Other reviewers echo the opinions that I have about this book. It is told in dual timelines and was sometimes hard to follow. The story was slow to build but kept my interest. It is part love story, part family saga, part mystery as Nora tries to find out what happened to her father Liam. Did he fall, did he jump, was he pushed? Nora realizes that there was much more to her father's life and story than she ever knew and the mysteries will keep. you reading to find out how it all fits together. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Dual timeline. A mystery that kept me intrigued, an unexpected love story and an end I didn’t expect.
I was so grateful to be an ARC reader for this book. Thank you Laura Dave, Net Galley and Simon Element, S&S/Marysue Rucci Books. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
Having read and loved The Last Thing He Told Me, I was very excited to get my hands on Laura Dave's newest book. The Night We Lost Him, read more like a family drama than a mystery/triller, sure there was a "what happened" / "who done it" thread, but it wasn't the main one. The back and forth between narrators and in time, gave a different view of father and daughter. This was a slow read, something I could easily put down and pick up, but always held my attention. Fans of Laura Dave should look into The Night We Lost Him.

Thank you Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
Maybe I was expecting too much—more of a page-turner—and that's why I had unreasonable expectations for this book. While there was a certain element of mystery, it lacked the excitement of author's other book "The Last Thing He Told Me".
The writing was excellent as always, but the pace felt a little slow because there were a lot of internal monologues. I didn't find the characters or the plot itself to be as engaging as I could have. It was a good read overall, though I found the plot to be a little predictable and uninteresting at times.
Personally, I didn't think the flashbacks were all that essential to the plot, especially considering how frequently they occurred. Although I thought the whole plot twist was unexpected, I still found the conclusion to be a little underwhelming.
Those who appreciate romance and family drama books should read this, but those seeking a fast-paced thriller shouldn't. Fans of Laura Dave might also appreciate this one.

First and foremost, Julia Whelan’s narration of this story, like all her other narrations was a 10/10! The way she narrated this story, truly brought it to life, especially with the emotional aspects of this domestic suspense about two half siblings investing their father’s suspicious and untimely death especially adter it was ruled an accident so quickly.
I really appreciated the look through another lens that these adult children did around their father, their own lives, love, and loss while trying to identify if there was more to his death than the accident it was ruled to be.
I also really appreciated how the half siblings that never really had a relationship grew their relationship throughout the book.
All in all, if you are looking for a thriller, I definitely wouldn’t call this that. But if you are looking for a story with slight suspense about the life and loss of a father with his own life and secrets, then I think you will enjoy this one as I did!
Thank you so much to S&S for my gifted ARC and audiobook in exchange for my honest review!
More of a romance than a mystery. For that reason it’s not what I expected when I chose it. It’s interesting and a light read just not right for me. If you like romance and light family drama and if you liked her previous book than I think this would be a good fit .
I was so excited when I found that Laura Dave was releasing a new novel. I really enjoyed her previous book, The Last Thing He Told me, as well as the series. After finishing The Night We Lost Him, it’s clear that Laura Dave has found her niche in writing suspenseful, thrilling novels.
Nora is distraught over the death of her father, Liam Noone. They’ve always had an interesting, sometimes strained relationship, but his death leaves her reeling. When one of her half brothers contacts her regarding his questions in their father’s death, Nora starts to realize there’s more to this “accident” and more to her father’s life than she ever knew. The book then follows the siblings as they slowly unravel the mystery of what happened the night he died.
The Night We Lost Him is very much a suspense novel, however, I feel it’s more of a love story. While there are absolutely twists & turns in this novel, it never quite hits the exhilarating levels of The Last Thing He Told me. I did enjoy the chase for information on Liam’s death and while I wasn’t blown away with the twist, it did keep me guessing until pretty much the very end.
I really enjoy Dave’s writing and I definitely think this book is worth the read! Many thanks to Netgalley and S&S/ Marysue Rucci Books for allowing me to review an ARC!
The Night We Lost Him by Laura Davis grabbed me from the start. It is the second book I have read by this author and I enjoyed it better than the first. I really enjoyed the whole book but especially the end. Love the title too.
When you have loyalty and love you have everything, but then you have everything to loose and you will loose it one day. When you do, the pain will be unbearable. Who had this kind of love in The Night We Lost Him and who had love without loyalty. It’s worth reading to find out.
If you’re looking for a feel good book, a book about true, deep love, a book about family bonds you won’t be disappointed in The Night We Lost Him. Than you NetGalley and Simon Element for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Night We Lost Him by Laura Dave is a bittersweet story about finding the truth behind someone’s life and death after all the clues seemingly have disappeared. It is about realizing what matters in relationships and finding out how to move those forward - or not. It is part mystery, part love story, part family drama and most importantly, part redemptive to re-balance once life tilts too far off center.
Thanks to NetGalley and Simon Element for the opportunity to read this ARC.
This book was gripping and hard to put down. It didn't feel like everything else you see out there, it felt very fresh. I really enjoyed this book!
The Night We Lost Him follows Nora and Sam Noone, brother and sister on a mission to find out if their father's death was accidental or something more sinister. Nora and Sam are not super close siblings, and their relationship seems a bit disjointed. One thing that bothered me about the plot was how Liame's children all found him to be their hero, although Liame was married to 3 different women and had children with 2 of them. The way the ex-wives and children still held Liame in high regard seemed to be unlikely and unrealistic. Other than that plot hole, overall, I really enjoyed this book and found it very fast paced.
I enjoyed this book but it was slow moving at times. The writing was good and the author did a great job of building the characters.
After the death of their father, estranged half siblings Nora and Sam reunite to uncover how he died.
I thought this book was absolutely lovely. It was a quick read, so perfect for a lazy Sunday. It had elements of a thriller (suspicious death and characters), but most of all it was beautiful story about the power of love and the underlying bond of family. I felt connected to all the characters and was eager to unravel the story and see how it progressed.
I would recommend this book to all!
I have loved so many of Laura Dave’s prior novels - 800 Grapes, Hello Sunshine, The Last Thing He Told Me - that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on The Night We Lost Him. Unfortunately, this one didn’t quite grab me the way the others did - I waited for the story to pick up and hook me which never happened.
This book is short, which always appeals to me - so if you’re on the fence, give it a shot - it’s not a major time commitment!
3.5 family drama stars
An estranged family comes together after a tragic death. Liam falls (or was he pushed?) to his death from his home at the top of a cliff. His two adult children, Nora and Sam, start to dig into the circumstances and aren’t satisfied that it was accidental.
That story alternates with an earlier love story between Liam and Cory.
Liam was head of a conglomerate of high-service hotels. With three ex-wives, he compartmentalized each family member and kept things separate.
As we learn more about the love story, Nora and Sam start to piece together pieces of their father’s life that were previously unknown to them.
Nora is still grieving the loss of her mother and potentially the loss of the relationship with her fiancée as she digs into the past.
There is a mystery to solve about the circumstances surrounding Liam’s death and another twist thrown in, but overall, this was more of a family story than a thriller.
This was a quick read, but I wasn’t completely engaged with the story or the characters. I do like this author, so will definitely read her future books.
I loved this author’s last novel, The Last Thing He Told Me and looked forward to reading her new novel. This story focuses on how individual family members deal with their grief. It’s different for everyone. Sam and Nora haven't had a close relationship in years but started talking after the loss of their father.
Sam calls his sister Nora and tells her he believes their father's death was not accidental. He doesn't have proof. He wants her help in finding some. The mysterious woman they keep hearing about as the narrative progresses intrigued me. Sam and Nora get to know their father better as they uncover clues surrounding Liam Noone's death. Was it an accident, as the police said, or was someone on the cliff with Liam who pushed him off?
Each family member has time to think about their life with their father. Some good, some bad; the family is doing their best to cope with their loss.
Overall, this heart-wrenching romance and family drama blended with a mystery is one that would work well with your next book club meeting. This story switches back and forth from the present to the past. I liked the fact that it was clearly marked. It gave the readers a closer look at the father’s life. I felt that this novel had more F bombs sprinkled throughout it (than her last novel) as the siblings and ex-wives tried to get to the heart of the matter.
