The Night We Lost Him is another gripping novel by Laura Dave, the author of The Last Thjng He Told Me. This one will not disappoint! We follow the family of businessman Liam on the search to find out what really happened the night he died. Full of twists and turns, family drama, and surprises this is one you’ll start and not be able to stop reading! I loved how Dave has a way of introducing characters into the story and then pulling them back into the storyline when you least expect it. This is a must read on your book list!

Laura Dave continually delivers books that the reader can’t put down. Her latest, The Night We Lost Him did not disappoint! To me, it was more family drama than a mystery, but I loved it! It’s fast paced, great dialogue between the characters and did have a twist I didn’t see coming. Definitely recommend!

Laura Dave's latest book is about a family patriarch who dies. Liam has three ex-wives and three children. A daughter from his first marriage and twin boys from his second one. He loves them all very much and works hard to keep his lives separate and meaningful.

Then he dies. And his son Sam is convinced it's not a fall like it appears to be. He enlists the daughter to help and together they go back and forth between California and NYC to dig up what happened to their dad.

This is a little bit of a mystery, a little bit about families, lost love, grief, love and of course secrets.

Dave is a great writer and once I started it, I didn't put this book down until i was done.

The Night We Lost Him is a family drama with many twists and turns as estranged siblings come together to try and figure out if the death of their father was accidental or murder. The slow burn of a story kept me guessing right up until the end when a major plot twist is revealed. Recommend if you like complicated families with a little bit of a mystery.

Thank you NetGalley for this arc.

Liam Noone is a wealthy hotel magnet, has been married 3 times, has three children but why did he throw himself off the cliff that night? Nora has inherited her estranged father's California property but is even more surprised when her half brother, Sam, turns up with suspicions that their father was murdered. They begin to delve into Liam's history and long buried secrets that could change this fractured family forever.

I love Laura Dave and have read many of her works so I was very excited to jump into her new novel, but for some reason this one did not click for me. The pace is very slow and I kept waiting for it to pick up speed but it just didn't. It is told from duel POVs; Nora in the present and a flashback between Liam and Cory. The past was a little jilted and hard to know who's thoughts we were following. This is definitely more of a domestic drama than murder mystery but I never connected with the characters to make it a satisfying read.

Families are complicated, especially ones with money, multiple marriages, and mysteries. The Night We Lost Him is the story of estranged siblings trying to figure out if their father accidentally died, or was murdered. Somewhere between a thriller and a family drama, this book kept me guessing.

An engrossing family drama with thriller elements, Laura Dave is back at it with a wonderful new book that I finished in a day because I couldn’t put it down! The story follows Nora as her brother Sam comes back into her life after their father’s death to discover more about what happened the night he died, and she ends up learning not only her father’s secrets, but also much more about her family members and herself. This book isn’t a classic thriller, but has many elements: a central mystery, cliffhanger chapter endings, and a character reveal twist that I thought I saw coming but was actually very wrong and it genuinely surprised me instead. The family drama and moving depictions of grief are fully gripping. Highly recommend this one!

This was such an interesting book! I have enjoyed all of Laura Dave's books that I've read, so I wasn't that surprised when I enjoyed this one as well. The family dynamics were really interesting, and how Liam lived his life was fun to read about. I liked the structure of the story, how it went back and forth through time to help the reader better understand the characters and the stakes of their lives. When I started the book, I wasn't too sure what was going to happen, but I was happy to go along for the ride. It was an interesting book and I would recommend it to anyone who wanted a thriller but not something too intense. Thank you to NetGalley and Simon Element for this ARC!

This book reads more like a family drama than a mystery. While I did enjoy it, I will admit not nearly as much as Laura Dave's previous book. This plot unfolds. a little slow, and at times dragged on. Loved the characters, and felt they were well developed.

Superficially I liked this book. I definitely was feeling smug and then it through me for a loop, so the twist was well plotted. Some of the dialpgue was really good, especially the banter between Liam and Corey. Corey was my favorite character. She was a broad, like feom.black and white movies, smarter, cooler, prettier than anyone has a right to be. I also loved Jack. I loved the "go for ice cream" detail of his and Nora's relationship. I didn't like Nora. Which is tough. I thought she was immature and her characterization shallow. And that was a problem with a lot of the characters - they just seemed 2 dimensional. It could be because I got an ARC but it seems like it needed more editing. I imagine there was a lot to live up to after Things He Never Told Me. That was a departure from her earlier womens fiction/romance books. I:love read all.of Dave's books and will continue to do.so, thus just wasn't my favorite of hers, though still a worthwhile read. 3.75 stars

I absolutely loved this book. It sucked me in right away and I looked forward to reading it each night. (Isn’t that the best?!) A mystery and family drama are woven together as siblings try to figure out if their father really fell or was pushed. Glad I got an ARC of this one from NetGalley and I think it will be a hit when it is released in September.

I really enjoyed The Last Thing He Told Me so I was excited to get this book. I went into this thinking it would be more of a mystery thriller but this story comes off more domestic drama/ literary fiction and I think that skewed my perspective some but it was a decent read.,

Liam Noone is a big time hotel mogul who dies in a rather suspicious manner. While the police see it as an accident, his son Sam does not. When Sam reaches out to his half sister Nora to get her input and later help to solve the mystery, they end up uncovering family secrets they never asked to have.

While I was expecting a bit more of a thriller with more suspense in regards to Liam’s death, this book focused greatly on the relationships surrounding Liam. This story just didn’t have the same intrigue I felt with The Last Thing He Told Me. Some parts I found interesting and some parts I found rather boring. The suspense wasn’t there and I didn’t really care for the relationships so much rather than the mystery of his death. The writing was good though and I could appreciate the complexity of the family dynamics and relationship between Sam and Nora. I feel like people who enjoy family drama would enjoy this more, it’s just not my favorite.

When hotel magnate Liam Noone falls off a cliff at his seaside home in California, daughter Nora and her estranged stepbrother Sam suspect foul play in The Night We Lost Him. As Nora and Sam reluctantly join forces to dig deeper into their father’s death, they are met with resistance at every turn, from Liam’s coworkers, friends and others, frustrating them in their efforts to put their suspicions to rest. But the more they learn, the more they realize that their father held many secrets, and maybe uncovering those secrets may shed light on his death. The mystery surrounding Liam’s death, although central to the plot, is not the driving storyline here. This is a tender and tragic love story, brilliantly told by author Laura Dave, and will be a favorite of book clubs, as Liam’s life plays out throughout the chapters in flashbacks, adding to the suspense of a deeply held family secret. A worthy follow up to this author’s last blockbuster novel, it will not disappoint. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Overall, I’d describe this one as mediocre. Not great, not bad. Definitely not as good as The Last Thing He Told Me. Nora and her brother embark on an investigation of their father’s suspicious death. Meanwhile, we get flashbacks of Nora’s father’s long love affair. The first half took me days to finish, and then I binged the last half. I kept thinking there was a scandalous twist, and when the “twist” was finally revealed, it seemed rushed and underdeveloped. Another pet peeve of mine, and present in this book, is chapter titles that are unnecessary. I did enjoy the character development of Nora and Sam, as well as their father Liam. Depending on your mood, this one could be a hit or miss.

Huge thanks to Netgalley and Simon Element for the ARC.

It truly pains me that I didn’t absolutely love this book. I went into this excitedly thinking this novel would be another thrilling read akin to The Last Thing He Told Me. That book was one of my favorite reads of the year. Sadly however, this was not to be. This novel focused more on family drama and the unraveling of a father’s web of lies and even that phrase sounds more mysterious than it was. The story begins strong with a sinister push, and the title and blurb suggest a juicy plot, but the reality is a lengthy tale of family drama. The entire store centers on a father who could never commit his heart properly and repeatedly cheated on all his wives.

The narrative flows well and is written in a way that makes you empathize with the main female character, especially regarding her relationship with her father. Her romantic relationships are equally disastrous, which may have been intended to highlight her growth after unraveling the so-called “mystery.” I use the term “mystery” very loosely here. Unfortunately, the pace was just too slow for my liking. I enjoy Laura Dave’s work and I really had high hopes for this book, but ultimately, it fell flat for me.

Great addition to Laura Dave's family of novels.
When Nora's father dies unexpectedly, she and her estranged brother suspect foul play.
The tangled family drama centers around the death of their family partiarch and leader of a luxury hotel empire.
Set in NYC and the California Coast, it is a great slow burn family dramatic mystery.
