This was my first Laura Dave novel. The characters and the plot were layered and complex. I became more invested in the story with each page.
It took me a while to get into it but the intrigue intensified as the story progressed. I stayed up late to read till the end.
I would have preferred it not have the profanity. I don’t feel it was necessary to the story.
Thank you to Simon and Schuster and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an ARC. It was a good read.
Thank you to NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy of “The Night We Lost Him” by Laura Dave.
I absolutely loved "The Night We Lost Him," a compelling blend of a family saga and a mystery. In this book, two adult children, Nora and Sam, team up to uncover the truth behind the unexpected death of their father, Liam Noone, a wealthy businessman. As the step-siblings delve deeper, they discover surprising secrets about their father's complicated life.
The characters are well-developed, and by the end, I felt a deep understanding of both Liam and his children's motivations. Both children grew from better understanding their father's life. The plot is incredibly engaging, making it hard to put the book down. I highly recommend this book to lovers of both family stories and mysteries.

I read and loved “The Last Thing He Told Me” a few years ago, so I was really excited to receive Dave’s new book, which comes out in September of 2024. In this one, Liam Noone, the wealthy owner of a luxury hotel chain, dies unexpectedly from a fall at his house. While the local authorities are quick to deem it an accident, daughter Nora and son Sam aren’t sure. The estranged siblings team up to find out the truth about their father and what really happened, and wind up uncovering lifelong secrets.
I loved this book, it is so much more than a mystery or thriller, more of a very complex family saga with a central mystery. I couldn’t stop reading it. It wasn’t what I expected, and it was also much better than I hoped. Highly recommend.
3.5 Star. If you expect this highly anticipated new release from Lara Dave to be another high paced thriller, I think you'll be disappointed. I did like this book, it is very well written and there is a mystery element to it, but it's more a family drama than a nail-biter. I was definitely surprised with the third act reveal, but I don't understand why this relationship, which is pivotal to the story, was revered to the extent that it was. I didn't buy into the ""epic love story" that was impactful to so many lives.
Another family drama from Laura Dave and I am HERE FOR IT! Told from the viewpoint of 2 separate time periods, I was extremely captivated with who "The mystery woman" was, more so than the plat of the book (aka who killed daddy??) I wolfed this book down in one sitting, it was so easy to read, and it wasn't overwhelming at less than 200 pages.
Nora is the daughter of a wealthy hotelier, and she wants nothing to do with his business and instead forged her own way as an architect in New York City. When her dad passes away unexpectedly, Nora is put into a situation where she is forced to spend time with one of her step-brothers that she hasn't seen in 2 years. AWKWARD. But, the two together are determined to prove that their dad was murdered and are not accepting that foul play was ruled out.
Highly recommend this book for anyone that likes a great family drama with a bit of a mystery! Side note - Love how the font of the book cover is the same as "The Last thing He Told Me" Just based on the cover alone, I knew it was the same author.
Take this review with a grain of salt as I read it during a really busy time (May is nuts as a teacher and parent of a high schooler!) so it took me a long time to get through it. With that being said, I did not enjoy it as much as The Last Thing He Told Me. I found it was hard to keep all the secondary characters straight and I felt like the story just kept going on and on and on. The flashbacks seemed a little random and not really super integral to the story. The ending was just that....an ending. I was waiting from something a little more grand but it ended just how the rest of the story was told: a little dry. Not my favorite, but I know there are others who have loved it!
I went into this book with high expectations as I couldn't put down “The Last Thong he Told Me”. That wasn’t quite the case with this book. I found the majority of the book to not be as captivating as I’d like. It felt very slow paced and didn’t necessarily pick up until about 80% of the book. I was expecting a huge jaw dropping conclusion to the story and it kind of fell flat for me.
"The Night We Lost Him" by Laura Dave is a story about love and loss. Liam Noone is a successful businessman who builds beautiful hotel getaways but he is not so successful in love having been married three times with three grown children whom he loves and cares for - his 2 sons who work in his business - Tommy and Sam -and his daughter - Nora - who is a successful designer who wants nothing to do with the business - but with whom he only has a sometime relationship. Then there is Cory, the woman whom Liam has loved since high school - more than 50 years ago- who refuses to marry him no matter how many times he asks. One night Liam falls over a cliff near his beloved cottage on the Pacific coast. Did he slip? Was he pushed? If so by whom and why? As Nora and Sam set out to find answers about their father's death and the parts of their father they never knew, they also find themselves asking questions about their own lives and what it means to love another person. A glorious book to read and contemplate - what does it really mean to love someone?
After enjoying The Last Thing He Told Me I was more than excited to get an ARC of The Night We Lost Him! In this book Laura Dave goes more towards literary fiction/family drama than thriller/mystery. There is a lot of family secrets to unravel in this one with the death of the family patriarch at the center. Although I found the mystery woman's identity more of an interesting storyline than trying to figure out what happened to the father. If you are expecting action like her last book be aware that this is a slower, more emotional story. I liked all the characters and the growth was visible in all of them by the end. This book covers infidelity(which it seemed to romanticize, so not my cup of tea), grief, loss, regret and difficult family dynamics.
I liked this more than her other book but I'm a sucker for stories covering members of a family and all the messy nuances that each family has.

I received this as an ARC from Net Galley!
This was a mystery/love story/ family drama. It was unlike any other “thriller” I’ve ever read, and I just loved it. The story unravels at the perfect pace, with dual timelines from father and daughter’s perspective. You get sibling relationships and romantic relationships wrapped up in one big puzzle.
The Night We Lost Him by Laura Dave follows Nora and her brother Dave as they investigate the disappearance of their father Dave.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t as impressed with this book as I have been in the past by Laura’s previous works. I found some parts interesting, like the estranged sibling's aspect and the mystery behind the father's death, but most of the background storylines I found were simply unnecessary and did nothing to advance the plot itself. The pacing wasn’t as good as the author's previous works and I found myself more times than not wondering when something would happen to liven things up. Unfortunately not one of my favorites.
I went into this expecting a mystery/thriller, but this isn’t really a thriller. There is a mystery to solve; actually, there is more than one mystery here. Nora and her half brother, Sam, are trying to find out what happened to their father, Liam, on the night he died. Their investigation leads them to realize that there is much about their father’s life that they don’t know.
The Night We Lost Him is more of a story about complex family relationships and grief with very little suspense and a lot of heartbreak. It’s very sad, but it was a quick read and I enjoyed it.
This story centers around a prominent hotel magnate and father's mysterious death and the unraveling of his family's secrets. I enjoyed the estranged siblings' bonds being built as they are brought together to struggle to find meaning and answers in the wake of his death. I was surprised at the twist toward the end and enjoyed the everlasting love story aspect. Some parts felt like they dragged a bit, but I enjoyed the story as a whole nonetheless. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

Oh man, this was rough. I don’t know how to write this review without spoiling things, so it might be vague. I didn’t like the main characters, I didn’t like the portrayal of the father, I didn’t like how there were unnecessary storylines that served no purpose: why did the brother have to have a twin? Why did we get so much focus on the dad’s “mysterious” boring past? Why was the pacing so damn slow? Why did it end the way it did? Why do authors use nicknames to hide who they are truly writing about? It was so dull!
I can’t say for sure to skip this because I’ve seen some great reviews. Don’t go in thinking it’s a murder mystery. It’s a familial drama that centers on the dysfunction, infidelity, and multiple marriages of the father, as well as a closed-off daughter who comes across as too bitchy. How am I supposed to root for any of these people?
Definitely check out her older book, The Last Thing He Told Me. I liked that one a lot more.
Thank you to @netgalley and publishers for an ARC in exchange for my *honest* review.
Excellent! Finished in one day. I have not read the previous mystery that everyone buzzes about, but I am a new fan of the author. Honestly when I read the summary, I wondered if I would really care about the death of a family patriarch, but I such affection for the characters and all their nuances. While there are questions of foul play and betrayal, this is a good choice if you are looking for a novel without the darkness inherent in much of the genre. The author introduces themes about family ties and individuality and love and what we hang onto and how we let go. Highly recommend. I imagine this one will also be adapted for the screen. Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for the ARC and the opportunity to share my review.
This is a fantastic slow-burn mystery with a similar feel to The Last Thing He Told Me, but without the thriller/suspense vibe. Even without the thriller element, I was invested in the mystery/storyline from beginning to end, probably because I liked the author’s writing a lot. The family drama woven throughout the story was complicated and always interesting. Nora’s arc was well-crafted. I loved how her working through her father’s death paralleled in an understated way her relationship with Jack. Liam and Cory were a puzzle to me, and if they couldn’t figure themselves out I don’t feel bad that I couldn’t either. Of the dual timelines, I definitely leaned in more to the present rather than the past. That said, I think their relationship was true to themselves, so in a way it made sense. The resolution for Liam’s death at the end was thought provoking, and I love how it propelled Nora forward. The understated ending for Nora was a perfect fit.
Thank you #Netgalley and #S&SMarySueRucciBooks for the arc e-book
I am not sure I would call this a thriller. It was more like domestic drama/suspense. Although it wasn’t what I expected I still enjoyed it overall. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC!
I enjoyed it. It felt like a no-rush novel to read a few chapters every couple of days. I did get lost with all the similar names, but still enjoyed the compelling mystery of the family secrets and the relationships around their father.
If you loved The Last Thing He Told Me, then you should definitely read her newest book!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of the book.
Laura Dave writes novels that stay with you long after the book has ended. Her latest work, The Night We Lost Him, is no exception. It checks all the boxes of romance, suspense, mystery, and family drama. I was hesitant to read it after seeing several unfavorable reviews, but The Night We Lost Him is a really good book. It delves into some family secrets and not so good family relationships. The book presents a compelling mystery, though it doesn't delve deeply into intricate details. However, this does not take away from the plot. Author, Laura Dave ties up the story nicely and delivers an exceptional read. This is one for the beach bag!
I'm really enjoying the new direction that Laura Dave is taking with her novels. Not only are they family dramas, they are suspenseful and exciting. The Night We Lost Him reminded me of The Last Thing He Told Me in their suspense elements and I really enjoyed both.
After Nora's father dies, her half-brother comes to her with his suspicion that his fall was not an accident. As we go along with Nora and Sam as they work to develop their sibling relationship and uncover the truth about their father's death, we are also treated to chapters that flash back in time to their father over the course of his life. I thought I had figured out who Cory was multiple times but I was still surprised at her identity. The ending was satisfying, if a little underwhelming.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of the book.
