I feel like the synopsis made this sound more exciting than it was. I was expecting it to be more of a thriller, but instead it was family drama, loss, heartbreak, etc. The story felt really slow moving and then I got CeCe and Cory confused (maybe pick a different four letter name that doesn't start with "C" for one of them). I was hoping for a more exciting ending but it just sort of was there (though I was thankful we do get an answer of what happened).
Kindly received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Since this book seemed to have some mixed reviews, I went into it wondering if it would deliver. It did, dear reader. I liked it a lot. There’s a lot of unraveling family secrets and drama here. Some people may expect more thriller-esque action, and you won’t find that. Also, the mystery did get wrapped up a little too nicely, but I still enjoyed the ride. It’s okay, though! It’s still worth your time!
I will happily read Laura Dave’s next book. Look for this on September 17.
My thanks to NetGalley and S&S/ Marysue Rucci Books for an advance copy in exchange for my honest feedback.
Great mystery. There were many layers to the story with different kinds of relationships and relationship issues. The book kept me reading but I think it was a little slow at times.
I've had a good run with some truly excellent novels. Part family drama, part thriller, this compulsive novel takes place in the aftermath of a patriarch's death. Filled with beautiful settings (Dave writes the California coast so beautifully) and realistic, if occasionally unlikable, characters. I docked a star because of the pacing - it definitely felt plodding at times. It's a testament to the author's talent that she was able to romanticize marital infidelity and make it not only understandable but also romantic?
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
A heart-wrenching family drama full of mystery and intrigue. Tears were shed and I couldn’t put it down!
A great read with suspense, intrigue, and sadness. The author did an excellent job of balancing two connected storylines to show the investigation of a death and the love story of the deceased. While I felt a few storylines could have been expanded on, the story read well and kept me interested.
Long hidden family secrets, secret lovers and a murder are the ingredients to a suspenseful new thriller by Laura Dave. There are many facets to Liam Noone and his dynasty of luxury hotels. When he dies suddenly in a fall from his California estate, his children suspect foul play, and they investigate. From New York to the west coast of California, Dave portrays the machinations of family loyalties and vendettas with the deft characterizations and compelling descriptions of grief and love. The point of view changing between past and present develops narratives that keep the reader in suspense. Thanks to Laura Dave & S&S and Netgalley for the ARC.
I really liked The Last Thing He Told Me, but this was very bland in comparison. I didn't feel connected to the characters or story at all. The plot lacked depth, pacing, and urgency.
Thanks to NetGalley and Simon Schuster for this ARC! When Nora’s father, a well known hotel/resort developer dies suddenly in what appears to be an accident, she’s joins her estranged half brother in trying to find out what really happened. The story is told in dual point of views (Nora and her father) and timelines. What I thought was going to be a mystery/thriller ended up being a touching story about love, loss, and grief. There was a surprising reveal at the end but that was not really the focus of the book. The love story was frustrating at times but it led to a good conclusion/perspective. The pace was a little slow and drawn out in my opinion but it was still an enjoyable read.
This book was just okay for me- it's more of a family drama + romance than a thriller. It was a bit slow for most of the story but overall it was well written and I loved how the MC dealt with her feelings around the grief of losing her father.
I enjoyed this much more than "The Last Thing He Told Me" so I'm intrigued to read what Laura Dave comes out with next!
Laura Dave is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I read this in a single sitting. The characters were richly developed and beautifully flawed. I didn't see the ending coming, which is also a huge step for me.
Nora is grappling with feeling like an outsider in her own life. Her relationship with her boyfriend is fizzling out, she barely knows her stepbrothers and their families, and her mother recently died. On top of all of that, her father has died from a fall off a cliff in his own backyard. So when her stepbrother, Sam, calls and asks for her help, she is leery. He thinks their father may have been pushed off that cliff, she thinks that seems pretty far-fetched. While pursuing their own investigation, they find out more about their father and the secrets he kept.
At times heartbreaking, at times gripping, this family saga is beautifully told and the ending is superb. Laura Dave can really tell a story, and this one is fantastic. Thank you, NetGalley and Simon Element for the advanced reader copy of this 5-star book.
I have enjoyed Laura Daves work before, but her latest - "The Night we Lost Him" fell a little flat for me. This was more of a romance and domestic, family story focusing on grief and trauma and not a mystery/thriller like the "The Last Thing he told Me", which is a shame. I enjoyed the storyline well enough, but felt it was a bit slower paced than necessary. Also, the POV chapters switched sometimes & were hard to identify. I had to stop several times and reread them. There's also a good touch of historic fiction here & I did like the California settings & house. An okay read, but not what I was expecting. My thanks to Net Galley & the publisher for the DRC, which I did mainly enjoy.
The Night We Lost Him is an engaging, interesting read. It is fast-paced and the characters are loveable and relatable.
3.5 stars rounded up.
This book was well-written, although slow. I think I would have liked it better if it just didn’t pretend to be something it wasn’t. This is not a mystery/suspense/thriller at all - it’s a love story. And kind of a confusing one at that. There were no exciting moments for me, just kind of a vague curiosity that had some payoff in the end.
The story felt like it was personal to the author, like she must have been weaving something of her own life into this book and I think when someone is writing about something they have experienced that felt huge and meaningful, it can be hard to convince others it was actually that huge and meaningful.
I just finished reading "The Night We Lost Him" by Laura Dave and I have to say, it's an absolutely captivating novel. Laura Dave's talent for storytelling is evident in every page, as she expertly weaves together mystery and romance to create a truly unputdownable story. I found myself constantly trying to piece together the mystery, and I was pleasantly surprised that I couldn't figure it out until the very end. The portrayal of the Noone family's dynamics felt incredibly authentic and relatable, adding depth to the story. Dave's portrayal of the blended dysfunctional family is intricate and nuanced, making the characters feel very real. Overall, "The Night We Lost Him" is a 5-star gem that I wholeheartedly recommend to any reader looking for a compelling and well-crafted novel.
I really enjoyed Laura Dave's previous book, so I couldn't wait to dive into this one! And while it was certainly different—not a fast-paced thriller and more like a family drama and a mystery—I didn't mind the differences. It kept me curious to see where it was going until the last page.
I enjoyed this book after reading her last novel, I was excited to get approved! I was expecting more of this to be a thriller but came out more like a suspense to me. Nonetheless, It was great!
Received an advanced copy thanks to Netgalley!
Really was looking forward to The Night We Lost Him and it did not disappoint! Went into it expecting a thriller along the lines of The Last Thing He Told Me, but this one felt more like a family drama than a thriller to me. There were definitely suspenseful elements to the storyline but the main focus was on the family and its dynamics after an unexpected death.
Laura Dave knocked it out of the park again! This author might end up becoming a favorite of mine. She has a gift of character yet development that many authors do not.
